View Full Version : Why dont Timken & Mckinley play each other
Was talking to a friend from McKinley who said Timken refuses to play them. Did not believe his reasons why. Seeing they share the same gym wouldn't this be a great yearly rival?

Geez... why be a hard case about it?
I was trying to help you clarify your post to a state-wide audience that reads these threads. And FYI, there might very well be some younger posters from Toledo or Cincy that might NOT know about the Pups... and they're fans too, whether you like their knowledge level or not.
You thought enough to make the smart-arse "hammer & nail" remark... you'd think you'd have wanted McKinley all over that post.
I realize the last couple years have been a little frustrating for Pup fans ... but you should still be willing to educate the uneducated about Bulldog hoops tradition.

Back to the original question which is very good. I'm sure many people around the state wonder the same thing. The answer is very clear to people around Stark County. McKinley did not want to play Timken for fear of losing one or two years straight. You see, McKinley gets all the good basketball players in the city and they want them to continue coming. If they lose to Timken that could shift players away. Well, that has happened but not because they lost to Timken. You can see how fragile the pipeline has become.
To answer the original question as best as possible. I don't believe it has anything to do with either school. Certain groups were choosing schools and setting up shop in the behind the basket seats. The people who were actually there to watch the game along with those in charge of the CCS got tired of it and ended the series. Maybe it will pick back up in the future.

Thats a joke to say a school that has dominated another school like non other doesn't want to play them because of fear.

IMO, that has nothing to do with it. One has to look no further than the off-the-court fights in the stands and outside the fieldhouse to know why the two schools no longer play each other.

Nothing big here, but McKinley beat Timken in the 1996 district finals, not the 95 finals. That was one of the greatest high school games I have seen. Jamal Ball and Troy Robinson at Timken took on a good McKinley team. Great game.
It has nothing to do with the wins and loses and everything to do with these idiots here in Canton running around the street thinking they are a man carry guns and willing to fight other gangs when their manhood is challenged...lol what a Joke these wanna bes are I wish they would all go to Detriot, NYC, or DC... for a year

They are not on eithers schedule! That was easy.
I believe Canton still has enough talent to have two very good teams that would put fear in any opponents heart, but McKinley=BASKETBALL the numbers speak for themselves.

That's true, RR... but there are suburban-Youngstown area schools reluctant to play East & Chaney anywhere but their own home floors. Same was true when Rayen & Wilson were still open.
Rayen wanted to play Fitch and Boardman in home-and-home games for a long time. Neither would come up to Rayen and play in the Tigers' Den. Phil House, the old Rayen coach told me that himself. If they played... it HAD to be @ Fitch and @ Boardman. :Ohno:

yea, I wish these kids would get their heads screwed on better and we could continue playing eachother even though over time its always been McK coming out with the win but I liked going to the games and the kids got pumped up for the games... Because most of these kids are all friends and have grown up playing each other from Grade school up...

You're kidding yourself if you think the McKinley games against Massillon and GlenOak resulted in the same amount of off-court activities as the most recent McKinley vs. Timken games. There's simply no comparison!

I agree as well, Tdot.
The proximity of the two schools coupled with playing in a building shared by both as a home floor, is an unfortunate recipe for disaster when you're talking area & "turf" issues.
It's really too bad that a hand full of thugs spoil what could be a GREAT rivalry. A rivalry that should be renewed every year. Fans within the city of Canton (as well as hoops junkies from all over NEO), and the athletes themselves, are cheated of these games. :wallbang:
It's a shame so many are "held hostage" by so few punks.

There are more than 35 known gangs in Stark County and a number of them ARE Bloods and Crips spin-offs. Those aren't the ones that cause the most problems however in the long run. Their upper level guys keep the youngin's in check (again for the most part). It's the guys who decide to start their own gang and then act like they THINK a gang acts that leads to the nastiness. Most of the problems I've seen and heard about are from wannabe's, not the real/older/more established gangs.

Correct - but the list provide is from the McK web - Basketball database
the year stated on the list is the start of the season (not the end).
ie: on the list - 1960 is the 1960-61 season
If you check 1959 shows Timken winning (1959 Regular Season L 57 - 55)
this is the year (1959-60) - John Nemciu led Timken to Columbus.

Middletown's last title was 1957 (50 yrs)
last title game was 1977 (30 yrs)
last Final-4 1983 (25 yrs)
