I will start this thread to read opinions on what schools may have the top programs in the state for the 2008-09 hoop season.
In the Central District, the top two teams heading into the preseason, in my opinion, will be the Columbus Northland Vikings and the Newark Wildcats. The top team in the state may very well be the Vikings of Northland High. Led by P.O.Y. candidate Jared Sullinger and frontcourt mates Witherspoon and Cornley this team is loaded for a long run in next year's state tournament. The Vikings have finished the last two regular seasons at 40-0, an extremely hard feat in the Columbus City League. Northland with Sullinger in the line up has lost only 1 game in his first two years in high school. I personally don't see too many teams that can stop this team.
Newark will return three starters and the top two players off the bench for last year's state champions. The three starters, Dennison, Watson and Kopp will be joined by team mates Huffman and O'Keefe to head next years team. Also, junior transfer Ryan Dierks (Newark Licking Valley) will battle for playing time. Dierks set an Ohio state record for consecutive made free throws last season as a sophomore and averaged close 18 ppg last season.
Who are some of the other top schools in other areas of the state?? Let's hear some opinions!!

Princeton should be the favorite to make it out of SW Ohio. The Vikings return 4 starters and a total of six players who saw very significant playing time last year. All they really lost was their starting point guard and a couple bigs that gave the starters breathers. These six players go like this (heights and weights are approximates)
Starters:
G: Marcus Davis 6-1 190 JR
G: Orlando Williams 6-4 180 SR
F: Jordan Sibert 6-3 180 JR
F: Stefon Johnson 6-6 210 SR
F: Marquis Horne 6-7 205 SR
First off the bench: G Andy Baker 6-2 170 SR
Williams, Horne, and Sibert all have multiple D1 offers, with Johnson likely to make it onto a mid major team as well.
Princeton will run and press all game. Those six guys are all extremely athletic; they're basically all swing players who will try to score by penetrating the lane or on the fast break. As a result of this, the only weakness I see to this team may be rebounding. Johnson and Horne play down low, but they're natural small forwards. There isn't really a true space eater to gobble up rebounds. Other than that, they're solid. I saw them yesterday at Miami and they're already in mid season form.

Cleveland Heights, Warren Harding, Timken, and Jackson have all looked good when I have seen them this summer. I have not seen Garfield Heights, but I know they are absolutely loaded.

While Northland will be very strong again, I think they're going to miss Devon Moore more (pardon the pun) than most people think.
It's going to be very hard for Newark to repeat without Avery. His performance in the state championship game against Lakewood St. Edward was amazing.

I think Northland will be just as good. A little different but just as good. Devon Moore is a MAJOR piece to lose. Trey Burke on the court instead of the bench is a MAJOR pick-up. Ian Nixson is one of the best shooters around he will be replaced by Dimond Hale who is a phenominal athlete. Add in two of the best freshman guards in the state in KeChaun Lewis and Jordan Potts then Northland remains as a strong team. Mind you they will be very different but very strong. Look for Jared to be more of force and for increased production from JD Weatherspoon. Trey Burke should average more assists per game than Devon did but not as many points as Devon did. The same goes for Newark. Hard to replace a Greg Avery. In fact you probably can't. They added a new piece to the puzzle in Ryan Dierks. Not the slasher that Avery was but an even better jump shooter. That clears the way for Rhalin Watson to slash more. Newark will be a little different but very strong. Great teams like the Wildcats take new pieces and reload. They are the defending State champs and the road to the 2008/2009 championship has to run through Newark.

Some great post. Let's get some input from the N.W. part of the state. I'm not sure but I thought that Libby had a decent team returning....info??
oxat622, great post on Princeton...do you have any knowledge on the rest of the Catholic league down in the 'nati? My son will be attending " X " next year and I think we'll try and take in some of those league games.

Some great post. Let's get some input from the N.W. part of the state. I'm not sure but I thought that Libby had a decent team returning....info??
The power may be in the suburbs and lower divisions this year and BTW, Libbey is DII. Libbey graduated the house and has a new coach coming in (Macomber grad, can't be all bad). They have an excellent pipeline though.
Except for St John's, the league was senior heavy last year. This year, Taylor (sr), Springs (Jr) and Norrells (Soph) are all legit top 100 in state, for their respective classes. Simmons is most improved and with Kynard (I think an Eastsider?) provide beef in the front court. But they weren't recruited. ;)
Start will have an extremely good nucleus, including their best players coming back to some solid coaching. Henderson should get legit DI looks. Start could be this year's Whitmer.
Whitmer lost a lot of beef plus DI Ryan Smith. Coach Smith probably has the toughest task ahead of him.
Waite graduated seven seniors but also moves up JV's and Freshmen that made Toledo final four. He should actually have a bit of height to work with. Coach Pit and family are treasures to the neighborhood. His staff has done something rare with a program, build it from disaster and graduate kids with character.
Bowsher has good young talent and a second year coach with decades of experience, but little of it in an urban league. Should be interesting.
Scott: Coach Subs has a solid perimeter and depending upon usual senior transfers in, a fairly balanced talent. He does best IMO with this type team, his last two "star" led teams both underperforming.
This year, St. John's is the only reliable state caliber team in the City League.
Somebody closer to Findlay than me will have to chime in with who they have other than Luke Kraus.

Centerville, they have not lost a game this summer and have beaten most all the powers in the SW district. Their inside game is unbelievable with Kavanaugh, Repogle, White. Its theirs to lose.

I agree with the teams mentioned, My pick goes to Huber Heights Wayne.
They are loaded with young promising talent. After losing 7 seniors on a team that won a district and league title, they look even better thus far this summer. Here are some names off the top of my head.
Travis Trice Jr. 5'8 Soph/shooter
Marcus Crider 6'3 Soph/ plays 1-5
Braxton Miller 6'2 Soph/ slasher/ all american quarterback
Lamar Mallory 6'5 Sr./great leaper and rebounder
Jordan (JB) 5'10 sr./shooter with range
Akeem Freeman 6'3 soph/can jump out of the gym
Tyler Watts
Also look for CJ, Centerville,Middletown led by Bill Edwards

I see a familiar name on that list. Hmmmm I guess they are "moving" on so to speak. He's a good player, but has some head case issues that I saw. I don't care how good you are, if you can't be coached, you might as well ride the pine. I can't wait for SHS vs HHW!

If Andy is the starter, PHS will need more than one basketball every possession. He is much more of a scorer than someone that set the floor for others. At least, that was the case at the end of last season. You could very well be right but time will tell. Either way, Princeton's top eight including Shoemaker and Wilkins are a load to be dealt with.

Are you sure Shoemaker is going to play this year?? And even if Andy is not the starter Princeton will need more than one basketball every possession. But he has been starting this summer.

Anthony indicated to me that Coach Andrews had cleared him to play next season. I took him at his word. Would be surprised, not shocked if Andy starts during the season especially against pressure defenses. I would see him as instant offense off the bench with a catch and attack mentality. Marcus was a better defender and played more minutes at the position last season. Is Marcus playing summer league? If I am not mistaken, baseball commands the vast majority of his time and with good reason during the summer.

How many of the "first seven" (starters & top subs) did Wayne lose from last season, S_L???

for all of those centerville supporters that are crowning them b/c of their summer performance, you must not understand what summer ball means. the elks were beat by princeton in the tourney, the OHSAA tourney, which means something.
don't get me wrong, they will be good. based on what everyone and anyone that has seen these teams the past couple years, or this past, it would be safe to say that centerville, middletown, and princeton...along with a GCL team, will be the teams to beat.
summer league is such a joke. i can't believe the press it gets.

Centerville will be very good this year but lets be honest. They played and beat Middletown and Princeton without most of their top players and Certerville had everyone. They haven't played any of the GCLS either. I would temper your enthusiasm a little.

Centerville last year lost 3 games, 1 to a nationally ranked prep school who went undefeated by 9 their closest game,by 1 to Wayne at the buzzer and to Princeton by 2 in their poorest effort they won 20 games with a team that returned 1 starter. Centerville has beaten Princeton twice this summer by 14 in one and by 1 in the other and both games they led by over 20 and Princeton was at full strength and centerville was without replogle arguably the second best player. Trust me Princeton was taking it seriously . Crnterville also beat Garfield heights a team who also beat Princeton. Centerville has improved dramatically as they always do, they have won 75 percent of their games over the last 12 years and they never looked like this, staley is not the guy you want to see with talent.

I agree, Coach Staley is tough to beat with an average team and this years squad is anything but average. They are going to be very difficult to defeat . With MK, replogle, ash,Crawford and Coach Staley this just mightbe his year to get to the regionals and State.

Interesting...
It appears Kirby Wright from Lakota East may be back at Middletown, where he is from and where his family lives. Wright is a 6-7 Sophomore with unlimited potential. That would be the icing on the cake for the already talented Middies. He has been at the high school all summer.
We will see what happens
By the way, Centerville has a great program and they will be a team to be reckoned with, but Sibert and the boys at Princeton were just babies last year and beat them. The Vikings just may be the best team in Ohio. Centerville beat a Middies team too this summer with no Bill Edwards, Alan Roberts, Anthony Strothers, etc...Middies ran the backups - so the win doesnt mean anything.

Your right it is the GWOC North, How can you not be impressed with the talent and how hard these young men play! It will come down to Centerville and Wayne again for the league Title, but who cares:wallbang: Its all about Regional and State titles, they're not far from that. Don't be mad success happened over night. That right there cancells out any point you were trying to make. Last year when it counted Princeton beat Centerville and they return just as many players, so that is why Princeton is the team to beat in SWO.
Btw why do you not want to see Staley with talent? The guy has won nothing, has he even ever made it to Columbus? Seems to me Centerville always has a good record and then loses to a Cincy team in the playoffs, and I see that happening once again this year.

the Elks are definitely good, but to say that, "they have never looked like this", is a little bit excited...The 2002 squad with Ben Rhoda, Logan Leen and Chris Spears would probably beat the current Elk squad, head to head, by 10...the Elks had a great year last year, but against some of the weakest teams in GWOC history...they did play that nationally ranked unit, but there was so much competition back in 02, against just about every opponent...it seemed like every team in the league back then had at least one D-1 player and some had 2 or more...the GWOC was a complete joke last year and one of the only decent teams, Lebanon, you played without one of their best players, the center...there were about 6 teams in 02',who would give the current Elks, all that they could handle...some of the GWOC teams last year were like rec league teams or worse, simply pathetic...Kavanaugh is a good player, but at 6'10", he simply has no one to match up with, whereas, in 02, Vandalia-Butler had two 7 footers who ended up playing D-1 in college, South had 6'8" Ivan Harris, who played at OSU and on and on... simply no comparison to the joke that the league has become...the Elks might run the table this year, a truely great accomplisment, but that 02 team, was just awesome and this years team is good, but not as good...

first off it's summer who cares most of the teams are missing line ups. The vikes were never fully loaded their starting point guard is one of the top baseball players in the country and he wasn't there (Marcus Davis) they were also missing shoemaker kid who I've heard has put on 15lbs of muscle. So to say they were at full strength slow ya roll, and thats kinda of scary. Those kids played 6 GAMES on sat. I repeat 6 Games they only had 8 kids. The Elks were at least 17-20 deep. I think they had two teams there. So who cares.

Whats tournament history have to do with the upcoming season? If you want to talk history then last year Princeton beat Centerville (isnt that history?)...and the Vikes have pretty much everyone returning. And the Middies beat Princeton once last year, so you cant tell me that Middletown or Princeton is worried about anyone.
You said they cant get Bill to play? WTH? He was the GMC player of the year last year and lead the league in scoring and rebounding. They lost to the Vikings in the tourney who then went on to beat the Elks, so come up with something else.
Summer leagues arent indicative at all of a regular season. Not even close.

You couldn't be more wrong with this statement, Princeton wasn't close to being at full strength at the XU camp. Why are you making things up to make Centerville look better? Everyone thinks they're going to be very good and could rep SWO at the Final 4, no one has said anything bad about them...
I officiated at the XU Camp, I know FOR SURE Princeton wasn't at full strength.....

What's Centerville done in tourney last nine years how about 22 wins and 9 losses 8 district finals 3 districts and two regional finals. But before you say its nothing tell me what your school has done the last 9 years. No boys team in the state has been to 8 straight district finals.

are you sure no school in the state has been to 8 straight district finals? maybe one day you will realize how weak this district is....so back to what i was saying is a lot like larry ham breeze through the league win the district not much after that...staley is a good coach for the miami valley but how many state appearances does he have? but i guess winning a average league (as of lately) and winning district but i guess beating butler, sidney, belmont, fairmont, north, or south lately is a tough thing to do

lacking a true point guard, would like to see allen attack the basket even more and have bill and the boys spotted up and ready for the dish. I just hope they don't play too much standing and waiting for someone to do something. These guys could be really good.

Maybe not 8 straight appearances , but Trotwood has been the best in the Dayton area in the last 4 years, winning 4 straight districts(Centerville, Moellar,Cincinnati Oak Hills,Lebanon) championships,1 regional championship & state runner up. Thats means they can compete outside of the GWOC.

warren harding will be pretty good in the northeast led by desmar jackson who arguably is the top senior in the state and sheldon brogdon they will be hurt tho by the loss of chris henderson and damian eargle

How is Clark going to continue going to Timken if his guardian is no longer employed there? Are you "grandfathered" in once you enroll at a school?
Garfield Heights is gonna be extremely talented
if im not mistaken wayne lost 4 starters but all the seniors seen big minutes but all these players have seen a lot of varsity action except the jb kid from what i understood....freeman started for springfield south last year as a freshmanEveryone knows that Akeem Freemna is still in Springfield, right? Apparently he wasn't able to establish residence in Huber to complete the transfer and is, for the time being, enrolled in Springfield HS. Whether that is true come basketball season is a big question.
GO CATS!!!!!!!

Jevon Clark will continue being a Trojan... What does employment have to do with why Clark is at Timken? His Dad wanted him to go to Timken and with the CCS BOE passing the new rule about tranfsering from McKinley to Timken or Timken to McKinley he would have to sit out one whole season before he could play for them and that would kill him as a D1 recruit.

Akeem is back in Springfield, does not mean a thing. Springfield will still be below average record wise.

Strongsville
6'1" John Hamilton-floor general-senior
6'3" Ryan Bores-3 pt specialist, lockdown D-senior
6'7" Aaron White-plays like 2G can knock down 3's and got hops-sophomore
6'6" Raymond Hamilton-a physical specimen will avg 10 rebounds.. strong inside, a finisher with nice touch
6'9" Deverin Muff- tall, lanky but his athleticism will make up for it. can knock down 3's. needs to be bulked up to be a complete player-junior
POSSIBILITY-
6'9" Justin Jameson-might be able to play basketball since transferred to Strongsville for baseball.
should be a rebuilding season but will once again a contender for Districts.

8 straight district titles mean..........nothing. kind of like UC hoops winning the great midwest title and conf. usa so many times in a row and not winning it all. hanging a banner that says district champs wouldn't make me exicited, kind of like saying we almost made it to the sweet 16 or elite 8 or final 4. almost, but not good enough.

Cleveland Heights, Warren Harding, Timken, and Jackson have all looked good when I have seen them this summer. I have not seen Garfield Heights, but I know they are absolutely loaded.
Hudson beat Cleveland Heights in the championship game at the west virginia shootout, as well as jackson in the steubenville championship game shootout. Both tournaments hudson didn't have their full team due to football.

I saw Hudson a few times this summer and they will definitely have a nice team. However, they will not be among the elite teams in the state. Hudson may not have had their full team in either of these instances, but did the other teams?
