I wonder if this has ever happened in Ohio.

Marriotts Ridge Gets Title Shot Via Forfeit

ABERDEEN, Md., May 23 -- The players on the Marriotts Ridge High School baseball team had turned in their uniforms and thought their season was over after losing to South Hagerstown, 14-10, in their Maryland 2A semifinal Wednesday. But when doing some bedtime reading Thursday night, Mustangs Coach Paul Eckert realized his team might be playing in Saturday's state championship game after all.

While looking through old newspaper articles because he lacked other reading material, Eckert saw that a pitcher from South Hagerstown High had pitched 15 innings in a seven-day span, one more than state regulations permit. He alerted school officials, who informed the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and, by Friday afternoon, South Hagerstown had forfeited its victory over Marriotts Ridge.

"They just lost track of it," said Mike Tesla, South Hagerstown's athletic director. "It was just an oversight. It wasn't malicious or anything, but it cost us."

Instead, Marriotts Ridge (18-5) will play Kent Island for the Maryland 2A title at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.

"I suppose if there was a Sports Illustrated or Consumers Report, or any other magazine I read, I would have been reading that and we wouldn't be playing tomorrow," said Eckert, who added that he re-read stories about all of the Mustangs' possible playoff opponents. "I felt my obligation to the boys I'm coaching that we do the honest thing and let the MPSSAA know."

I believe this year Chagrin Falls beat NDCL, and the Chagrin Falls pitcher was found out to have thrown 10 innings, and Chagrin Falls forfeited the tournament game.

According to a Plain Dealer article, the pitcher in question threw 2 2/3 one day and 7 1/3 the next, which constitutes ten innings in a three day period. BUT, according to OHSAA rules, 2 2/3 =3 and 7 1/3 =8, which makes 11, thus the forfeit.

In soccer last fall Mentor had to forfeit their regional final win over Jackson due to an ineligible player. Subsequently, the Polar Bears made it to the state final but lost. Here's the story.

Seriously? There was a pitcher a few years ago that came in and out of pitching (Defiance??) during a game by going to right field and then pitching when they were in a jam. This kept his innings to a minimum. Seems strange that the OHSAA would allow this type of pitching arrangement but rounds up at the end of the game. He may have pitched in every inning but only recorded 12 outs giving him 4 innings.

It was just in the PD yesterday. The coach blamed himself for not catching it. Chagrin Falls turned themselves in. A tough break for the kids.

Luckily, it's not like that in summer ball. I'd be ripping out what hair I have left. :dang:

That's close, but could you imagine that happening after you had won a state semifinal game & thought you'd be playing for a state title in a couple of days?

I believe for purposes of innings being pitched. A pitch thrown in any inning is considered an inning.

Didn't last year NDCL have to forfeit their Regional Championship over Canfield because of the use of an ineliglble player?

Correct. The coach left him off the roster. Canfield then went on to win the State Title.
