Sidney run-rules St. Mary's to Open District Two Play

Sidney jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and Post 217 rolled to its third straight win to start the season Thursday night, run-ruling St. Marys 13-3 in District Two Legion action at Custenborder Field.

Sidney scored twice with two outs in the first as Caleb Vorhees drove in Joe Engle with a double to right center and, after a St. Marys error kept the inning alive, Vorhees came in on a bloop single off the bat of Patrick Mescher.

Post 217 took advantage of another error in the second in tacking on three more runs. After the first two batters were retired, Jonathan Lowe’s grounder went off the glove of the first baseman for an error and Engle followed with a single through the left side of the infield.

That set the stage for Jude DeLoye and the Sidney catcher delivered on just his second at bat since last summer as he drove a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left center for a three-run homer to make it 5-0.

“Jude has a lot of natural ability and he showed that tonight, even though he hasn’t played in a game in almost 10 months,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “He only had the one hit, but it was a big one and he just missed getting a hit in two other at bats.”

St. Marys scored twice in the third, but Sidney answered that with a pair of its own in the fourth on a RBI single from Lowe and an Engle sacrifice fly and broke the game open with five more in the fifth, the key blow being an Engle two-run double.

Post 217 then forced the run-rule with an unearned run in the seventh.

“We’re scoring runs, but we’re not hitting the ball like I know we will later this season,” said Shoffner. “Once we get everyone here playing and get into a rhythm of playing nearly every day, we’re going to have quite a lineup.”

Wes Hunsucker picked up the win for Sidney, striking out eight in five innings.

“Wes didn’t have total command of his pitches tonight, but was able to make big pitches at the right time to escape a couple of jams,” said Shoffner. “He retired the last eight batters he faced, but his pitch count was getting high, so we brought in Brad Grillot and he did a good job in relief.”

Lowe had two hits and scored three times to lead the Sidney offense while Engle had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI, Mescher three hits, including two doubles, Colin Zwiebel two hits and Tyler Bey two runs scored.

Post 217 hosts the Ohio Warhawks tonight at 7.

A few bad pitches, a few bad hops, and a few blunders led to total domination. The Warhawks hit 4 HR's & multiple doubles. T.J. Martinez, the son of former Major Leaguer Tino Martinez, pitched 4 Innings stopping Post 217 from scoring any more runs.

Sidney hung around for two innings, but an 11-run third proved to be too much to overcome as the Ohio Warhawks handed Post 217 its first loss of the season, a 16-3 decision at Custenborder Field Friday night.

The Warhawks went up 4-0 with three runs in the first and another in the second, but Sidney cut the deficit to 4-3 with three of its own in the bottom of the second.

Joe Engle led off with a hit to center and after moving up to third on an error and a Caleb Vorhees groundout, Cory Echols walked to put runners on the corners. Tyler Bey reached on an error as Engle scored and, one out later, Jonathan Lowe walked to load the bases. A wild pitch resulted in the second Sidney run and Colin Zwiebel drove in the third with a hit up the middle.

The Warhawks, however, broke the game open an inning later as they sent 14 batters to the plate in scoring 11 times, capped off with back-to-back home runs, the first being a three-run shot.

“They will probably be the best team we’ll face all season,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “Most of their guys will either play in college, get picked in the baseball draft or both. We just need to learn from this and move on, especially with a couple of key District Two games coming up.”

Sidney, now 3-1 on the season, heads to Van Wert Saturday for a 1:00 doubleheader, the first game being a District Two contest.

Sidney Post 217 Sweeps Van Wert

The Sidney Legion baseball team improved its record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in District Two with a doubleheader sweep at Van Wert Saturday, rallying to win the opener 4-3 before posting a 17-2 run-rule decision in the second game.

Post 217 opened the scoring in the first game with a run in the first as Jonathan Lowe led off with a triple down the right field line and came in on a Colin Zwiebel sacrifice fly, but Van Wert tied it with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning and added single runs in the second and third to go up 3-1.

Lowe’s triple was the only hit for Sidney until Post 217 tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Brad Yinger started the rally with a double down the left field line and, one out later, went to third on a short single to left off the bat of Brad Grillot.

The rally looked to be in trouble as Grillot was caught off of first, but the relay throw hit Grillot in the helmet, resulting in runners at second and third. Jon Murphy then delivered a line drive hit over the head of the shortstop into left center to tie the score at 3-3.

Sidney scored what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth and, again, it started with a hit down the left field line, this time a single by Caleb Vorhees. Joe Engle followed with a single to right center to put runners on the corners and a Patrick Mescher sacrifice fly drove in Vorhees.

Yinger came in relief of Post 217 starter Zach Clark in the fourth and after leaving a runner stranded at third in that frame, threw two more shutout innings for the win while Mescher pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.

“We came out flat and were going through the motions early in that first game,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “Murphy, though, came through with a big hit in the fifth and Yinger and Mescher did a great job in relief.”

Yinger, Murphy and Cory Echols each had two hits for Post 217.

In the nightcap, Sidney put the game away early, sending 12 batters to the plate in scoring seven times. Engle and Wes Hunsucker each had RBI doubles in the inning while Yinger, Mescher and Aaron York all had run-scoring singles.

Post 217 added two more in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth to win going away.

“We came out hitting in the second game,” said Shoffner. “Once a couple of guys starting hitting, it became contagious and everyone chipped in. We also turned three double plays in that game and played well defensively the entire day.”

Engle was a home run short of the cycle in the second game and scored three times, while Yinger also had three hits and scored four runs. Mescher added three hits and three runs scored, Vorhees scored three times and Hunsucker drove in four.

Sidney has a busy week ahead with 10 games scheduled over the next seven days, starting tonight with a District Two makeup game at Lima starting at 7:00.

Sidney Falls at Lima

A storm before the game knocked out the power at Joe Bowers Field and all around Lima Senior High School.

Unfortunately, the storm also seemed to knock out the Sidney power as well as Post 217 managed just four hits against Lima starter Travis Kottenbrock and Post 96 scored five times in the fifth to pull out a 6-1 District Two win in a game shortened to six innings due to darkness.

Sidney opened the scoring in the first when, with two outs, Jude DeLoye singled to left and Joe Engle followed with a double to the fence in center to plate DeLoye.

Kottenbrock, though, escaped further damage with a strikeout, one of eight he recorded on the night, and allowed just two hits and a walk the rest of the way.

Lima tied the game in its half of the first on a RBI single from Zach Sterling and then used two walks and four straight hits in scoring five times in the fifth.

”We just didn't do much offensively,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “Ryan Leugers pitched well over the first four innings, but he gave up a couple of walks in the fifth and Lima was able to take advantage.”

Sidney, now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in District Two, hosts Napoleon tonight in a 6:00 doubleheader at Custenborder Field.

Sidney Splits With Napoleon

Sidney held the lead in both games, but could only come away with a split against Napoleon Tuesday night at Custenborder Field, dropping the first game 5-4 in eight innings before Post 217 came back to take the second game 9-5.

Sidney jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as Jon Murphy beat out an infield single, Cory Echols doubled to the gap to drive in Murphy and Ryan Leugers later had a hit up the middle to plate Echols.

Post 217 extended the lead to 4-1 in the third. Justin Hoying started things with a hit to left and after Murphy walked, both advanced a base on an Echols bunt and both came in to score on Nick Pulfer hit to left.

Sidney starter Brad Grillot allowed just the one run through five innings, including pitching out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the fifth. Napoleon, though, would close the deficit in the sixth with a pair of runs until reliever Zach Clark ended the threat by striking out Steve Riedel with a runner on third.

The River Bandits, however, completed their comeback in the seventh as Lucas Willitzer tripled to right center and came in on a Craig Gutman sacrifice fly to right and scored what turned out to be the winning run in the eighth on a RBI single by Kyle Reese with two outs.

Post 217 had chances in the late innings as Echols doubled with two outs in the seventh and Brad Yinger and Jude DeLoye each singled in the eighth, but could not push a run across.

Echols finished with three hits to pace Sidney in the opener while Leugers and DeLoye each had two.

The second game again saw Post 217 jump out to an early lead, this time 6-1 as Sidney sent 10 batters to the plate in scoring all six runs in the second. Caleb Vorhees knocked in the first run with a single and along with a RBI double from Tyler Bey, Colin Zwiebel drove in two with a hit through the left side. The other two runs in the frame came on a wild pitch and an error.

Napoleon, though, cut the margin to 6-4 with three in the fourth before Yinger came on in relief of starter Vorhees and picked up the final two outs of the inning on strikeouts.

Yinger then allowed just one run the rest of the way and finished with six strikeouts altogether in picking up the win.

“Our pitching was very good overall tonight,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “We sort of let the first one slip away, but we bounced back strong in the second game.”

Sidney picked up three insurance runs in the sixth as DeLoye hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, and Joe Engle followed with a double and later scored on an error.

“We swung the bats better tonight, but we still are having trouble with our bunts,” said Shoffner. “It’s something we need to keep working on as the season progresses.”

Patrick Mescher had two hits to lead Post 217 in the second game while DeLoye also had two.

Sidney, now 6-3 on the year, was scheduled to take on the Lima Buckeyes tonight at Custenborder, but the game has been moved to Sidney High School starting at 8:00.

Legion Falls to Lima Buckeyes

It was a late night, but not a winning one for the Sidney Legion baseball team as the Lima Buckeyes scored three in the eighth and held on for a 6-5 decision Wednesday night at Sidney High School, a game that ended at 11:17 after an 8:38 start.

Lima opened the scoring in the top of the first after the first two batters were retired on a two-run double by Ross Guisinger and Buckeye starter Austin Black maintained that lead through four innings, allowing just one Sidney hit over that stretch.

The fifth, however, saw Post 217 finally break through and tie the game at 2-2. Caleb Vorhees crushed the third pitch of the inning over the fence in center for his first home run of the season and after Patrick Mescher followed with a hit to right center, he went to third on a wild pitch and Colin Zwiebel bunt and scored on another single to right center, this time by Mitch Boerger.

Sidney then went up 3-2 in the sixth as Joe Engle doubled with two outs and Brad Yinger drove him in with a hit through the right side of the infield.

Lima, however, tied the game with a run in the seventh and then went up for good with three in the eighth, all coming after the first two batters were retired. A dropped foul pop up resulted in hits from Eric Schwab and Matt Rader and after Vince Gillfillian singled Schwab in, Brian Lybarger followed with another hit to drive in two more.

Post 217, though, posed a rally in its half of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs as Jude DeLoye was hit by a pitch, Engle sliced a hit to right and Yinger walked. Vorhees dropped a single just out of the reach of the second baseman to plate DeLoye and Mescher had a hit through the left side of the infield to make it 6-5.

But just as quickly as the rally started, it came to a sudden halt as Lybarger struck out Zwiebel, a missed squeeze play resulted in the second out and Boerger was robbed on a diving catch by the center fielder.

"We had some opportunities at the end, but just didn't cash them in," said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. "Engle pitched a great game, but we made some mistakes and Lima took advantage of them."

Engle struck out nine in 7.2 innings of work while Ryan Leugers pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.

Engle had three hits and scored twice to pace the Sidney offense while Vorhees and Mescher each had two hits.

Sidney, now 6-4 on the year, heads up I-75 this weekend for the annual Pemberville Invitational. Post 217 will play two games on Friday, taking on Blissfield (MI) at 1:30 and host Pemberville at 4:00.

Post 217 Wins Pemberville Invitational

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/tank_dogg06/Pemberville.jpg

PEMBERVILLE – It was a daunting task, winning five games in a 31-hour span, including three on Sunday, but the Sidney Legion baseball team did just that in claiming the Pemberville Invitational crown over the weekend.

After all of Friday’s action was rained out, Sidney started tournament play Saturday afternoon against Millcreek of Pennsylvania and pulled away for a 6-3 win. Post 217 broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Jon Murphy and added two insurance runs in the seventh on a two-out hit off the bat of Colin Zwiebel.

Caleb Vorhees picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit, while Joe Engle and Patrick Mescher paced the Sidney offense with two hits each.

Saturday’s second game against Toledo turned out to a preview of the finals as Post 217 jumped out to a 4-0 lead, only to hold on in the end for a 4-3 victory.

Sidney scored a run in the third on a RBI single by Jude DeLoye and tacked on three more in the fourth as, with two outs and no one on base, Justin Hoying walked, Zwiebel reached on an error and Jonathan Lowe followed with a three-run home run to right center, his first of the season.

Toledo answered with three of its own in the bottom of the fourth, but the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate and Post 217 held on the rest of the way despite Post 335 getting two runners on in the fifth and seventh.

Brad Yinger pitched 3.2 innings of two-hit, shutout relief to earn the win and added two hits while DeLoye also had two hits and Hoying two runs scored.

Sunday’s action started with a matchup against Blissfield, the defending Michigan state champions, and starter Cory Cannon held the Sidney offense in check for five innings, giving up just a run on two hits, and retired the first two batters in the sixth on routine fly balls.

Engle, though, kept the inning alive by reaching on an error by the second baseman on a slow roller and DeLoye tied the game two pitches later by cracking his third home run of the year to left center.

That seemed to be just the spark Post 217 needed as after Yinger doubled to right and Vorhees reached on an infield hit, Mescher gave Sidney the lead for good with a double off the fence in left center. Back-to-back walks to Hoying and Mitch Boerger resulted in another run and a Zwiebel two-run double down the left field line followed by a two-run hit by Lowe along the right field line made it 9-3.

After Engle singled through the left side of the infield, DeLoye forced the run-rule with his second home run of the inning, a three-run blast to left center.

In all, Sidney scored 11 runs on eight hits in the inning, including two strings of four consecutive hits, all coming with two outs after collecting just two hits heading into the frame.

“Just an incredible inning,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “We got a break with Engle reaching on the error and when Jude hit that first home run, something just clicked for us and it became contagious.”

Post 217 all but clinched a spot in the finals with the win over Blissfield, but had one more game before then against Fremont. Sidney again faced a deficit as Fremont scored three times in the first, but Derek Coverstone singled in a run in the bottom of the inning and Post 217 took advantage of a couple of defensive miscues to go in front to stay with three in the third.

Vorhees singled in Murphy in the fifth to make it 5-3 and that turned out to be a key run as Fremont scored a run in the seventh. Hoying, however, in his first Legion start, induced a groundout to earn the complete-game win, scattering six hits over the final six innings after the three-run first.

“Justin really gave us a boost with that complete-game effort,” said Shoffner. “We had some people step up this weekend that you normally wouldn’t expect to and Justin was one of them. He gave us a solid pitching performance, played great at shortstop and also did some good things offensively.”

Murphy scored three times while Brad Grillot had two hits.

Ryan Leugers then took the mound for the championship game and was dominate over the first five innings, giving up no hits and while he did walk three, two of those were erased on double play grounders.

Meanwhile, the Sidney offense produced a run in the first on an Engle groundout, two more in the third on doubles from Zwiebel and DeLoye and an Engle hit, and two more in the fifth on sacrifice fly by DeLoye and Engle to make it 5-0.

Leugers saw his no-hit bid broken up with one out in the sixth and Toledo dropped in two more hits in scoring twice in the sixth, but the left-hander closed things out in the seventh with a tag out of a runner at third on a double play followed by a strikeout, his eighth of the game.

“Our pitching was outstanding this weekend and Leugers capped it off for us,” said Shoffner. “Other than the one inning, we didn’t put up big numbers offensively, but we had some big hits when we needed and did just enough to win.”

DeLoye was named the tournament MVP after collecting five hits and eight RBI in three games.

Sidney, now 11-4 on the season, is off until Wednesday, when Post 217 heads to Hardman Field to take on Piqua in a 7:00 contest.

Sidney Wins Pitcher’s Duel Over Piqua 1-0

PIQUA -- It was a quite a pitcher's duel at Hardman Field Wednesday night and, as often the case in such games, it was decided on an error as Sidney Post 217 pushed across a run in the sixth and made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Piqua Post 184.

Starting pitchers Wes Hunsucker of Sidney and Drew Bailey of Piqua each posted goose eggs through the first four innings. Bailey faced just two batters over the minimum over that stretch while Hunsucker had to pitch out of one jam, getting Logan Rasor to line out to third baseman Brad Yinger to leave runners at first and third.

Post 217 had a golden opportunity to score against Piqua reliever Andy Long in the fifth as Patrick Mescher drove a hit by a diving Paul Schulze in center for a leadoff triple, but Long preserved the shutout by getting Jon Murphy to pop out and Colin Zwiebel and Justin Hoying to ground out to shortstop David Moore.

The sixth, however, would be a different story. Ryan Geier, playing in his first game for Sidney after leading Coldwater to the Division III state semifinals, started the frame by beating out a grounder to short for an infield hit and stole second.

After a pop out, Jude DeLoye hit a fly ball to right deep enough for Geier to tag up on and head to third. The throw from right fielder Mark Doran, however, got by third baseman Jay Schulze and went out of play for an error, allowing Geier to score.

Piqua posed a threat in its half of the sixth as Paul Schulze led off with a walk, stole second and, two outs later, went to third on a sharp single to left from Jay Schulze.

Sidney coach Bill Shoffner turned to Ryan Leugers at that point and, despite a walk to Tregg Barga to load the bases, he pitched out of the inning by inducing Steven McGeorge to ground out to Mescher at first.

Post 184 again threatened in the seventh after the two batters were retired on three straight hits from Blaine Reese, Paul Schulze and Rasor. Leugers, though, closed out the game and earned the save as Sam Thobe hit into a force play at second.

"The pitching on both sides was excellent tonight," said Shoffner. "Games like that often come down to one play and this one was no different. Geier gives us some speed out there and that speed created the run."

"We're winning, but we're not hitting the ball like we should," added the Sidney coach. "Hopefully that will come around, starting tomorrow night."

Sidney, now 12-4 on the season, hosts Lima tonight in a key District Two game at Custenborder Field starting at 6:00. The game was originally listed on the schedule for 7:00, but will instead start an hour earlier.

Sidney Holds On for 7-6 Win Over Lima

Another night, another one-run decision for the Sidney Legion baseball team as Post 217 built a 7-0 lead through five innings, only to see a Lima rally fall just short for a 7-6 District Two victory at Custenborder Field Thursday night.

Sidney is now 13-4 overall and improves to 3-1 in District Two play while handing Lima its first loss in district play. Of Post 217’s 13 wins, seven have come by one run, including each of the last two games, while two of the four losses have also been by one run. Lima falls to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in District Two.

Post 217 opened the scoring with two in the first. Ryan Geier led off with a hit up the middle, moved up to second on a Jonathan Lowe bunt, and scored as Jude DeLoye doubled down the left field line. One out later, Brad Yinger singled to left to plate DeLoye.

Sidney tacked on two more runs an inning later despite hitting just one ball out of the infield. Colin Zwiebel started things with an infield hit to third and, after advancing to second on a Justin Hoying sacrifice, scored as Geier comebacker to Post 96 starter Kevin Kortkate went off his glove and Kortkate, in his hurry to try to get Geier at first, overthrew first baseman Matt McKinney, allowing Geier to go to second. Geier later went to third on DeLoye’s fly to right and came in as Patrick Mescher reached on an error.

Post 217 then took advantage of three Lima errors in extending the lead to 7-0 in the fifth, two coming in as a result of RBI singles from Zwiebel and Hoying.

After stranding 10 base runners in not scoring a run through five innings, Lima broke through with a pair in the sixth, the two scoring on a wild pitch and a ground out. Post 96 then cashed in on two hit batters and two walks in scoring three more in the seventh on just one hit, a two-run single off the bat of Keith Hefner.

Sidney had a runner reach third in the both the seventh and eighth, but came away empty each time to leave the score at 7-5.

Lima had one last threat in the ninth as Cory Stephens singled with one out and scored one out later as Travis Kottenbrock had a hit up the middle and Kyle Strawn had a double down the left field line to plate Stephens.

But with the potential tying and go ahead run on second and third, Leugers closed out the game and earned his second save in as many nights by getting McKinney to hit into a force play at second.

“It was a win and a big one as far as the District Two standings,” said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. “We came out hitting early, but we let up on the pressure late and Lima took advantage.”

Geier and Zwiebel each had two hits and scored twice to lead Post 217, which is back in action with a doubleheader Sunday at 11:00 against Chillicothe at Sidney High School.

DeLoye gets game-winner in 5-4 victory for Post 217

Sidney Post 217 and visiting Chillicothe were able to get one of their scheduled two games in Sunday at Sidney High before the rains came in the second inning of a scoreless nightcap.

Post 217 won the first game 5-4, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to raise its record on the year to 14-4 heading into a game Tuesday at Miami Valley Elite.

Sidney scored four times in the bottom of the first and that appeared to be plenty as Post 217 pitchers blanked Chillicothe over the first five innings.

But in the top of the sixth, the visitors pulled even, rallying for four runs of their own.

In the first for Sidney, Ryan Geier started it off with a single to right and Colin Zwiebel followed with an infield single. The two then pulled a double steal to reach second and third.

Jude DeLoye then plated both with a double to left, and Patrick Mescher followed by reaching on an error.

The two moved up on a wild pitch, and Brad Yinger walked to load the bases.

After an out, a fielder’s choice cut down DeLoye at the plate. But Caleb Vorhees walked to force in a run, and Justin Hoying singled in the fourth run of the inning.

Chillicothe threatened in the first two innings against Brad Grillot but failed to score. But that all changed in the top of the sixth on a walk, two singles, two doubles and a Sidney throwing error for four runs off Vorhees, who was on in relief.

Sidney went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, and Ryan Leugers struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, after an out, Colin Zwiebel walked and stole second, then scored on DeLoye’s second double of the game to win it.

DeLoye finished 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Post 217, which had just six hits in all.

Post 217 wins ninth straight

Sidney Post 217 won for the ninth straight time, routing Miami Valley Elite in baseball action at Newton High School Tuesday, 14-1.

Sidney is now 15-4 on the season and plays at Russia against Russia's Acme team tonight at 6:30.

Sidney broke open a close game with five runs in the top of the third, then turned it into a rout with five more in the top of the seventh.

Patrick Mescher had a big day for Post 217, going 4-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in four. One of his hits was a home run.

John Lowe and Joe Engle both had two hits for Sidney, which had 14 in all.

Sidney got a run in the second when Mescher belted a solo homer to left-center.

The big inning was the third. Keith Schoenherr doubled to right to start it, and Ryan Geier followed with a double to score him, with Geier taking third on a throwing error.

Lowe singled him home and Joe Engle singled to put runners on the corners.

Mescher singled to plate Lowe, then Brad Yinger singled. A fielder's choice erased Yinger at second, with Engle scoring. Colin Zwiebel then reached on an error, allowing Mescher to score.

Sidney added a run in the fourth. With two out, Jude DeLoye doubled and scored on Engle's single for a 6-0 lead.

Post 217 added two more runs in the sixth inning. Derek Coverstone singled to short and scored on Justin Hoying's double. Mescher singled Hoying to third, then took second on a wild pitch. Brad Grillot reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Hoying.

Sidney then opened it up big with five in the top of the seventh. After an out, Ryan Leugers and Cory Echols both reached on errors. Both moved up on a wild pitch, then another wild pitch scored Leugers and put Echols on third.

Coverstone walked and went to second on a passed ball, then Mescher singled home two more runs.

Two more errors led to two more runs, and all five in the inning were unearned.

Miami Valley committed eight errors in the game.

Wes Hunsucker went all seven innings for Post 217 and allowed Miami Valley Elite just five hits. He struck out six and walked three, and the run was earned.

Post 217 splits with Findlay

Sidney Post 217 saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday at Custenborder Field, after rallying furiously in the first game to pull out an 8-7 win.

Sidney goes to 16-5 with the win and returns to action Tuesday at Ottawa.

After winning the first game for its 10th straight, Post 217 was poised for a sweep, only to have Findlay rally back in the late innings to pull out an 8-5 win.

In the first game, Ryan Geier had three hits with a double, Jude DeLoye, Joe Engle and Brad Grillot had doubles, Justin Hoying belted his first homer of the season, a huge hit in the sixth, and Keith Schoenherr had two hits. Engle also had two hits, including the game-winner.

Findlay jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first off Ryan Leugers, but Post 217 came back with two in the second. Grillot had a double and that was followed by singles from Schoenherr, Caleb Vorhees and Colin Zwiebel.

After Findlay scored a run in the fourth, Sidney got one back in the same inning on a single by Geier and a double by DeLoye.

Findlay then scored three in the top of the sixth, but Sidney again answered in dramatic fashion. Geier doubled and scored on Engle’s double. After the next two batters made outs, Hoying delivered a two-run homer to tie the game at 7-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Zwiebel led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Engle’s single to end it.

Engle got the win in relief after pitching a 1-2-3 seventh.

In the second game, Sidney led 5-3 going into the sixth inning, but Findlay got two to tie on a two-run homer by Herr, then added three more in the seventh to win it.

For Post 217, John Lowe singled and homered, and Engle had a double. Sidney had just five hits.

Sidney splits Twinbill with Greenville

Sidney Post 217 came ever so close to a doubleheader sweep of Greenville Wednesday night, but one bad inning in the first game resulted in a split between the two teams.

Sidney starter Brad Yinger was sharp in the opener, allowing only five hits and throwing just 72 pitches in going the distance. But three of those hits came in one inning and led to all the Greenville runs in a 3-2 verdict.

Sidney bounced back to take the second game by a 6-4 final to leave its record on the year at 17-7.

Post 217 returns to action Sunday at home against Ottawa in a doubleheader.

The first game was scoreless after five innings, but Sidney broke the tie in the top of the sixth on a single by Jude DeLoye, a double by Joe Engle and a single by Yinger.

But in the bottom of the inning, Greenville got three runs after two were out on a single, a double and a two-run homer by catcher Gray.

Sidney got a run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Keith Schoenherr, but that was all it could manage.

Yinger struck out three and walked two for Sidney.

Schoenherr and Engle had two hits, and Jonathan Lowe added a double.

In the second game, Sidney sprinted to a 6-0 lead before Greenville made it interesting with a four-run fifth. But that was all the hosts could muster.

Sidney took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Derek Coverstone, then added two more in the third when Ryan Geier belted a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.

Post 217 stretched the lead out to 6-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Schoenherr singled and Coverstone doubled. A Cory Echols grounder scored Schoenherr and moved Coverstone to third, and later in the inning, pinch-runner Jon Murphy scored on a double steal. The final run came home on DeLoye’s single.

Ryan Leugers was the winner, with Engle getting a save.

Post 217 routs Van Wert 12-2

It started and ended on a home run, with a lot of offense in between, as the Sidney Legion baseball team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 12-2 District Two win over Van Wert Wednesday night at Custenborder Field.

Post 217 needed just two pitches to open the scoring as Ryan Geier drove a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center for his second home run of the season. Van Wert starter Damon Joseph retired the next two batters, but the Sidney offense wasn't done yet as singles by Joe Engle and Brad Yinger set the stage for Patrick Mescher, who smacked a three-run home run to center, his second of the year, to make it 4-0.

Sidney added another run in the second on a Jude DeLoye sacrifice fly, but Van Wert took advantage of a pair of walks from starting pitcher Ryan Leugers in scoring a run without a hit in the top of the third.

A Joe Engle RBI double in the fourth, though, got that run back and Sidney broke the game wide open with five in the fifth. A throwing error and grounders off the bats of Colin Zwiebel and Jonathan Lowe produced the first three runs and Post 217 extended the margin to 11-1 as DeLoye and Yinger each knocked in a run with a single.

Leugers allowed just an infield hit in the fourth and struck out nine in his six innings of work, but Post 178 temporarily avoided the run-rule in the seventh against reliever Caleb Vorhees as Malichi Murphy doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.

The game appeared headed to the eighth as the first two Sidney batters were retired in order, but DeLoye ended it by driving the first pitch he saw down the left field line for his fifth home run of the season and 25th of his three-year Legion career.

"We've only played five games over the last three weeks, so I was concerned how we would come out tonight," said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. "The Geier and Mescher home runs in the first really gave us a spark and we carried that the rest of the way."

"Leugers gave us another strong outing and our defense was good for the most part," added Shoffner. "We are going to play either Van Wert or St. Marys to start the District tournament, so these two games are important for us to build some momentum."

Geier was four-for-five on the night with a double to go along with his home run and scored three times while seven of the other eight starters in the Post 217 lineup each had two hits.

Sidney, now 18-7 overall and 4-1 in District Two, wraps up the regular-season slate tonight at St. Marys. A win would tie Post 217 with Lima for the league title and would result in a coin flip for the top seed in the upcoming district tournament.

Sidney Gets By St. Marys

ST. MARYS — It seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Sidney would defeat St. Marys Thursday night here in District Two Legion action.

After all, Post 217 was going for a share of the league title a night after run-ruling Van Wert and had defeated St. Marys 13-3 in the first meeting this season.

But, as the old cliché goes, that’s why they play the games as Sidney had to score twice in the eighth to take the lead and then held off a Post 323 rally in the ninth to escape with a 3-2 decision.

Sidney closes out the regular season with a 19-7 overall record and a 5-1 District Two mark, good for a tie for first with Lima. The top seed and matchups for the district tournament, which begins on Saturday at Van Wert, will be determined today and be available on
sidneylegionbaseball.com.

Starters Brad Grillot of Post 217 and Sweeny of St. Marys were locked up in a scoreless duel until the fourth, when Post 323 scored an unearned run on a bases-loaded walk to Sweeny.

Sidney, though, came right back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Justin Hoying led off with a hit to left and after moving up to second on a Mitch Boerger sacrifice, Jon Murphy singled through the right side of the infield to plate Hoying.

It stayed that way until the sixth, when St. Marys regained the lead on a walk, a hit batsman and two wild pitches.

Post 217 was retired in order in the seventh, but would put together a game-winning rally in the eighth. Patrick Mescher hit the first pitch of the inning up the middle for a hit and Ryan Geier followed with a bunt to advance Mescher to second.

Pinch-hitter Keith Schoenherr then hit a short fly ball to right that dropped in just out of the reach of the right fielder and bounced away, allowing Mescher to score the tying run.

Schoenherr went to third as St. Marys tried to get Mescher at the plate and then scored as Sweeny picked up the ball at the plate and threw wildly into left field.

Joe Engle, who came in relief of Grillot in the seventh, faced just seven batters in his first two innings of work, but found himself in a jam in the ninth as Post 323 had its first two hitters reach on an infield hit and a hit batsman.

Engle, though, bounced back and closed out the win with a strikeout, a grounder that resulted in a force out at third and a fly ball to right.

"Give St. Marys credit, they played a good game tonight," said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. "We hit some balls hard, but it was at their defense most of the time and they made the plays. We finally got a couple of breaks in the eighth and then held on from there."

Grillot allowed just one hit over six innings with three strikeouts while Engle picked up the win, giving up two hits in three innings with three strikeouts.

"Grillot and Engle both threw the ball well," said Shoffner. "They kept us in the game and gave our offense a chance to come back."

Post 217 in finals after 14-4 win

VAN WERT — The anticipated finals matchup in the District Two American Legion Baseball Tournament is now a reality, after Sidney Post 217 routed Van Wert for the second time in the tournament, 14-4, to emerge from the loser’s bracket Tuesday at Van Wert.

Sidney has its work cut out, needing two wins over Lima to earn a berth in the State Legion Tournament. The first meeting between the two teams will be tonight at Van Wert at 7 p.m. If Sidney wins, the two teams will return for another game Thursday at 7.

Sidney opened the tournament with a 21-1 win over Van Wert, and made it two easy wins in a row over the host team Tuesday night. With Cory Echols allowing just four hits and a run in five innings, Post 217 cruised to a win in seven innings.

Sidney scored twice in the first, three times in the second and twice more in the third to take an early 7-0 lead.

After both teams scored a run in the fifth, Caleb Vorhees sparked Sidney’s three-run sixth with a two run homer.

Van Wert got three off reliever Derek Coverstone in the bottom of the sixth, but Sidney came back with three more in the seventh to up the lead to 14-4.

Vorhees led Sidney’s 17-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with the home run. He also scored three times.

Ryan Geier had two singles and a double and scored twice, while Patrick Mescher singled, doubled and drove in three runs. Brad Yinger doubled, Keith Schoenherr had two singles and scored three times, and Colin Zwiebel had two singles and drove in three runs.

Echols struck out three and walked one in getting the win.
