La Salle junior basketball forward Danny McElroy, who orally committed to the University of Cincinnati just before his sophomore high school season, will re-open his recruiting.

The 6-foot-7 McElroy, who has one year of high school ball remaining, agreed with La Salle coach Dan Fleming and UC coach Mick Cronin to re-open the process, Fleming said this morning.

With Cronin's father Hep on Fleming's La Salle staff and a few other issues, Fleming said everyone decided it was best for McElroy to test the waters anew.

"We're dealing with a unique situation with the families, with Hep and Mick being intertwined ... it's not a typical thing for recruiting," Fleming said. "For both parties concerned, we said, 'Let's make sure wherever Danny McElroy ends up is best academically and athletically for him.' It's a mutual decision by us and UC."

Fleming said UC's recruitment of several other strong forwards also played a part in the decision. Fleming said La Salle is asking the media not to speak with McElroy about the decision.

Fleming said several other colleges are interested in McElroy, but Fleming would not name the schools.

Mick Cronin, as a college coach, is not permitted to comment publicly on prospective recruits until they are signed.

McElroy averaged 14.2 points and 7.0 rebounds a game this past season as a La Salle junior. As a sophomore, he averaged 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Here's how that conversation had to go:

Sunday Dinner over meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

Mic: Dad, Danny can't play for us.

Hep: I know son, he wouldn't play for us if we hadn't invested so much into his recruting. Do you want to tell him or do you want me to?

Mic: Let's let Flem do it.

Let's hope this is being done in the best interest of the young man and it all works out for the best.

Good news for both sides. He wouldn't get playing time.

After watching Danny Mac for the past two years I think it is being done in the best interest of ALL involved. He would have to improve leaps and bounds his senior season to justify being considered a Big East type of player. UC would have been hurt by it and Danny Mac would have probably transferred after seeing his playing time be little or none.

I hope he finds a school that matches his athletic talent that can provide a good education to him. A MAC school may be a better fit.

Agreed...his outside game simply hasn't developed. And he's not nearly big enough or strong enough to play inside in the Big East.

Too many things change....that's exactly why a kid should commit if an offer like UC is there. A school would look really bad to withdraw a scholarship offer. The kid has nothing to lose by committing since they always have the option of de-committing.

what i was getting at was that he never grew, and his game did not improve with age yet....and it puts people from both sides in tough spots

Disagree...The committment is non-binding both ways. Coaches have subtle ways of convincing a kid to de-committ if they don't develop. Same way coaches get kids in their program that don't get playing time to "choose to transfer" to open up a scholarship for a better recruit. In other words...I doubt this decision was made by Danny alone. I'm sure Mick did some work convincing him UC wasn't going to be the best place for him after all.

bottom line is he was an average player on a really bad LaSalle team, got blown out by both elder and Moeller at the end of the year, really embarrassing

Can Danny keep his committment to UC and simply switch it over to Coach Kelly? This kid was a beast on the football field in Junior High.

That's what ALMOST EVERY relatively athletic 6'6" basketball player should do
