Thank you... yappimember67 & WR21ST for beginning a fresh thread.
I've merged your efforts together when I realized you duplicated in error!!
The first big move in the CHL will be the announcement of the new Mariemont coach which is thought to come out either today or tomorrow...

No WAY!
It's early to tell who is going to win the league...I will say that it will come from Madeira, Indian Hill, Finneytown, or Wyoming...obviously that hardly narrows it down, but with teams losing so much we need a summer to see who gets better.

I know it's pretty early but here's my prediction for the CHL...
1. Madeira

4. Finneytown
5. Taylor
6. Mariemont
7. Reading
8. Deer Park
This probably isn't very accurate but it's just my opinion.

i think that Reading may stuggle again this year b/c of their lack of experience. However, in 2 or 3 seasons all this Varsity experience will pay off and I think they will be a pretty good team.

Reading has some potential...Deer Park will be terrible, and I think Mariemont and Taylor will also be in the bottom half, with the other 4 (Madeira, IH, Finneytown, and Wyoming) being the "contenders". It should be a very balanced league with the winner maybe having 5 or 6 CHL losses...

how did the league jv and freshman teams do?? madeira brings back almost everyone from last season. indian hill and wyoming and taylor bring back several starters or key bench players. finneytown, mariemont, and deer park all lose 3 or more starters from last season. reading is the wild card - they bring back a lot of players but they are missing a point guard and oh by the way they have open enrollment that is supposedly focused on middle and elementary schools. yeah right! so i think you have to look at guys from the jv or freshman level who can step up and contribute right away. i do agree that the league champ will probably have 3 or 4 losses.

This may be the first season in awhile that Finneytown doesn't start off the season as one of the top 3 most talented teams in the league. We can only hope that this is the year that they get it all together and that half the program doesn't quit/get kicked off before season's end.

Don't under estimate what Mariemont will be able to do this year.
mariemont has not had much success since cousins left, i am surprised they did not bring him back. why interview him if you are not going to hire him, they should already know what he is capable of doing without needing an interview process.

why hire a coach that will give you 5 years tops? they made the right decision in getting a coach committed to building on the overall success of the program that Kerr started. Cousins would not have been intrested in building a "program" just a varsity squad.....he might have a heart-attack at his old age anyways

I fail to understand what Kerr started? I have heard all the kids who can play and would help them win, who didn't play because of Kerr. Kerr was 28-35, in which all of those were years where the CHL was average at best, and he had talent that demanded better records. What did he start?
and how many mariemont coaches have lasted more than 5 years since cousins left? for that matter how many high school programs keep a coach 5 years? the successful ones do but the others are not patient and keep turning their programs over and over.

There were no kids who would have helped Mariemont last season who didn't play - for whatever reason. The 3 kids that someone else mentioned in the job thread would have been jv players and the jennings kid couldn't even play in jv games. So I'm curious what other kids are in the school that should have played?? It's simply not true and really is just sour grapes on the part of a couple of kids/parents who couldn't play in the program. I'm also curious to know how he had talent that demanded better records?? His first year he had 2 players with varsity experience, started 2 sophomores, and lost his point guard in game 8. How many more wins (8 that year) were expected? His second year they had the first winning season in 5 or 6 seasons. His third year he lost one player to injury in the preseason and another after game 8. And like I said before you also have to look beyond records to what was going on at the lower levels as well.
Anyway - this thread is supposed to be about the upcoming season. And I believe that Mariemont will surprise some people and probably challenge for the 4 or 5 spot in the league. I don't think they can compete over the course of the season with Madeira, Wyoming, or Indian Hill but I do think they can challenge the other schools for that next spot in the league.

Maybe I am completely off base with this, but when I look at what Mariemont had talent wise in Kerr's time, I can say honestly it was always in the upper half of the CHL (being behind over a three year period) Wyoming and Deer Park (because Harrison was that good).

Who are the key returners and key players coming up for each team this year???
yappimember67
05-12-08, 04:58 PM
Mariemont
Garrett Burke- Junior, played some minutes last year, will get a lot of minutes next year.
Scott Herkamp- Senior, was injured most of the season and only played a few games. Probably the Warriors overall most talented/skilled player.
Chase Lunsford- Senior, started some games last year. Good shot, takes a lot of 3's. Should start next year.
Zach Arington- Senior, 6'7, really played well towards the end of the year. Still needs to learn some more post moves to be really effective.
These should be Mariemont's top players next year (I might be forgetting some), but they also have some more players coming up from JV and coming back to play.
Deer Park:
Bryan Barthelmas
Adam Pettyjohn
Taylor:
John Greene
Cameron Youngblood
Petey Bucalo

Right now, I don't think anybody from mariemont should even be responding to the fact that many people selected the warriors near the bottom of the fact, because truthfully, if I was an outside observer, I would have to agree with them, for a lot of the players mm has returning are either untested, unknown, or returning from injury. For mariemont fans (I am one), we cannot talk any smack or make any bold predictions about next season, just take the criticisms in stride and work hard this summer, learn Coach Ellis's new system, buy in, then prove your worth in the winter and prove doubters wrong. Sure, players say they're returning who have talent and can contribute (a previous post questioned their talent but jennings, simons, and iles can all be productive), but if i'm correct (which I know I am) they quit because either they had issues with Kerr, were too lazy to work hard, or simply wouldn't buy into the program. MM just have too many question marks right now to be considered a solid team the upcoming season, but definitly are the team with the most potential to surprise

I agree with you. I think that Mariemont will finish in the bottom 3 for a couple of reasons. First, new coach, new system is always hard for any team, especially a team that has been stuggling to win games consistently. Second, a lot of inexperienced players. They've got a lot of players that either didn't play last year (b/c of Kerr mostly), were injured most or all of the year (Sizer, Herkamp), and just lack of talent. They don't have a whole lot of players that are capable of putting up some good numbers. Lunsford will get his points mostly b/c he shoots a lot. Herkamp will get a lot of points at the free throw line, on putbacks and driving to the hoop. Arington pretty much gets all of his points at the line or on putbacks. I really think that the lack of experience is going to hurt this team when it comes down to making plays in close games.

I happened to catch Lunsford's name in the paper on sunday. His AAU team won the Dayton Metro tournament so he is working on his game, and working with talent. Mariemont has huge potential with both Jennings coming back which gives them some decent length. with the bigs that they have and the shooting ability that lunsford has, with the herkamp driving ability. they could be dangerous next year...just my two cents

I will give some Mariemont players credit...many of them play all year to improve their game. Lunsford will be a big part of the team but I know Josh Jennings as been notorious for clashing with coaches. He isn't a big "team player" and isn't always one to follow the offense. Some for his brother, Job Jennings. They really need Herkamp to stay away from injuries for them to have a chance at a good season. He will most likely be their leading scorer and a team leader.

So Deer Park will go from 1st to last in most peoples opinion on the yap, I will agree that they lost a great group of seniors but who do you guys think that those seniors were practicing against? Summer ball will get this new group of players ready for the upcoming season. And they will be ready !!!!!!!! GO CATS !!!!!!!

I just know their JV team was terrible, and they have no freshman team (I think). With losing the guys that they did, especially Harrison, they will really struggle. It doesn't matter who they practiced against, because they didn't play in games. Deer Park had a very tight roatation and Harrison also averaged over 20 and 10, which is really really hard to replace.

Understand from the parent meeting last night Mr. Ellis has committed himself to building a PROGRAM. Wants to work with the feeder programs (rec. programs and jr. high)and build a solid foundation for the High School. Way to go! Should be a fun year to see how things play out! Still lot's of unknowns. Who are the starters? Any new kids? What JV kids move up?

The JV team was almost all freshman,I think they moved up 2 Jrs. and 1 freshman up for the Varsity games. And it really does matter who you practice against and I can base this comment on Taylor's struggles. If you are always practicing against a bad team you will not see success.

Taylor will be a decent team in the upcoming season, possible top 3 team. The coach over there has his team moving in the right direction.Team to beat is Madiera and Wyoming, but if the yellow jackets get a few breaks they could be in the hunt.

They do have some experienced players coming back, I'm not sure I would qualify it as "a lot of talent" at least right now, but they have kids who have played a lot of varsity minutes. They could sneak into the upper half of the league if they improve a lot over the summer, maybe this team can get past the "it's just Taylor" and win some games.

Predictions
Madeira
Indian Hill
Wyoming
Taylor
Finneytown
Mariemont
Reading
Deer Park
Taylor has a lot of young talent and I think this year will be a stepping stone for a potentially great year the year after this one. Deer Park's Bartholemas is a decent player but will not be able to carry the team. As for Finneytown, I only know they lost a very talented class that had lots of potential. Madeira returns two first teamers in Rob Tudor and Nate Gulick whose play will be vital for next year. Indian Hill has a solid team with Bonekemper and Griggs running the team along with soon to be Junior Hendricks. Wyoming is third in my opinion only because they are lacking at the point guard position as Alsop will struggle to contend with Griggs and Tudor. However, Jacob Green and Tanner Stacey are both potential first team players. Madeira wins the league in my book even without a post presence.
Having some talent doesn't always mean more wins...

I do agree with everything you have there, except for i'm not sure madeira will be lacking in the post this year. Matt Luther was a really good presence in there last year for the mustangs and i am looking for nothing less of him this year in coming.

I'm not saying Luther isn't a good player, but at 6'0" (maybe an inch taller) - that isn't necessarily something I would consider a post presence.
6'1" is pushing it with Luther...but in the CHL, height isn't really a telling sign of someone's ability in the post.

Madeira has not been fortunate enough in the last six years or so to have a real post presence but they have always managed well with what they got. Luther should be a tank in there next year though.:)

No disrespect to "Luthtrain" as the student section calls him, but he will struggle to contain more athletic and taller post players. I would watch out for David Wood for Madeira, as he resembles Indian Hill's Larry Drehs simply because they both put good ball pressure on other point guards and they play with intensity (not to mention they both look similar).
CHL First team predictions
Robbie Tudor
Nate Gulick
Tanner Stacey
Wes Bonekemper
Ben Gertz, Jacob Green, or Taylor's post player are all toss ups
Wes and Tanner are talented and they just need to keep their heads straight for a good year
There are 8 first team members to the first and second team of the All-CHL team.
My First team Prediction would be:
John Greene
Brandon Robinson
Jacob Green
Tanner Stacey
Rob Tudor
Nate Gulick
Ben Gertz
Matt Griggs
POY - Rob Tudor (Madeira)
COY - Jim Reynolds (Madeira)

Brandon Robinson
Jacob Green
Tanner Stacey
Rob Tudor
Nate Gulick

I think Taylor will suprise many people this year. I think their a top 3 team to finish in the CHL this year. They have young talent coming up on varsity this year. I think they will do better than people are expecting this year. They have the size with two big men, and they have the quickness and the shooting. Look out for the Taylor Yellowjackets this year playing for the CHL title.

Madeira has done very well at NKU this past weekend. They beat Ryle ( a big Kentucky school), Edgewood, Clark, and Colerain. Their only loss was Kings by I think 4 points. The IH Madeira game won't be much because i believe IH has 2 teams during the summer with talent spread out equally. Madeira's Starting line up has looked very strong Doug Tuke has been very good after taking a year off last year. It looks like they have moved Tudor away from the point and is now playing the 2 spot. Tudor has been outstanding and is starting to look like the POY.

How has the CHL done in so far this summer? Any reports on any new player that will make a difference, or are we going to talk about the same guys over and over. I saw Mariemont play at NKU and a lot of new guys any idea who they are? Must be freshman, they are big and quick? Looks like new coach likes to run and press!

Some of the new faces at mariemont is mostly in the sophomore class they are, taylor sizer probley the best out of the class has alot of potential he will be one of the best players in the league good shot and good of the dribble should see him alot this year. also job jennings he's tall has a good shot for a big man and can block shots he's a great athlete he will help the mariemont program. and also jake griffin he's small but he's really quick and a outstanding ball handler should play alot this year he has a hot head and gets mad easy if he can control that the sky's the limit. and the last person is chip stewart probly has the best shot out of the he can be very good leading jv scorer last year he's got alot of potential. and no there is no freshman on mariemont varisty
Mariemont will suprise alot of people this year.... The under classmen will play a big part this year.

mariemont might have some solid young players, but saying the replacement players are "way better than what we lost" is a bold statement considering you lost a 2 time chl first team-er in jordan, and baird and kippings wern't too shabby either, both averaging over 10 a game. i find it hard to believe any young guys will be able to transcend those players. but, we'll talk when the season comes around.

Cincybball11
07-12-08, 05:31 PM
Yes they were. Maybe you missed the second half. Goshen did not come close to beating Mariemont. Oh and they were missing Herkamp and Arington.
Having Arrington in the game probably would have hurt Mariemont.
cincybball03

all i remember is that goshen had a guard or two that could get to the rim anytime they wanted mariemont needs to work on there perimeter defense if they wanna win.

07-13-08, 04:29 PM
I really hope that Mariemont plays well this year, but i don't think they are going to be in the top 3 for a couple reasons. Frst, not a whole lot of experience. Arington played behind Jordan and Kippins last year and Herkamp has been injured a lot the past two seasons. Senior Chase Lunsford probably has the most experience from last years team. Also, new coach this year which probably means a new system to learn for a lot of young players, which is not easy to do. The last reason is they have no go to guys. Last year they had Jordan, Kippins and Baird who could all score, who do they have this year. I'm pulling for the Warriors but I don't think this year is the year...

Arington works very hard in the off-season and is becoming a better player. He started to play better toward the end of the last year averaging 10 PPG his last 5 games. They weren't against any the best teams but it still helped his confidence and showed that he could help the team out. He still needs to get stronger and become more physical down low though...
He needs to become much more physical and finding some more coordination wouldn't hurt
Chip Stewart for Mariemont will be a FORCE..

I doubt Bolser will play basketball this season. He has a scholarship to play football at Indiana, I doubt he will risk any kind of injury for bball. However if he does play, I think that would have to propell IH to preseason number 1 in the chl, with Griggs Bonekemper Hendricks and Bolser.

I agree...I did not see Bolser all summer, and he is a heck of a football player.I know the person who recruited him for IU he told me that Bolser and his father asked specificly if it was ok if he played BASKETBALL and lacrosse.IU has no problem with him play either sport..They don't want him sitting around getting out of conditon. He was traveling to football camps and lifting a large part of the summer. I don't know if he has a good relationship with the BB coach as far as being welcome back to the team.

Taylor always competes at the Jr. High level, in the upper half and then for whatever reason they never do anything on the Varsity. When is the last time they won 8 games or 6 for that matter in one season. It has to be way back during the Wests brothers years. Good Luck Jackets!! Lets have a .500 season then lets talk about winning a CHL title.

Finneytown won't have any superstars this year and most likely won't have anyone average over 10-12 ppg per game but if everyone who played this summer is able to play this winter, they'll have a solid team that should compete in the top half of the league.

I have to go with Wyoming to win this conference and it is for one reason; coaching. Tony Gentry is the best coach in the conference and one of the best in the city. He simply does a tremendous job
I will agree with you completely yappimember...and I don't think you can "simply" hand the title over to Gentry...there's a few great coaches in this league.

Gentry is a great coach, and thats why wyoming will most likely compete for the title, but wyoming has lost alot of size which is one of the reasons why they have dominated, but I just don't see them matching up to Madeira or Indian Hill this year, thats why i put them third

Yeah i agree about Mariemont... new coach/new system isn't easy to adjust to. I think that Mariemont, Taylor, and even Reading are pretty interchangeable.
IH has a couple of juniors that will make excellent contributions this season - Will Satterfield and Sam Hendricks. Satterfield has been hurt the last couple of seasons. He handles the ball well under pressure and shoots well from the outside. Hendricks is a force inside, strong low post player and a banger on the boards.

I saw Wyoming a lot last year and while a lot of people outside of Wyoming feel Gentry is a great coach there are alot of folks (Wyoming) who openly complain about him. He has won in the past because he's had superior talent. This year will be a true test of his coaching ability. They have little or no post presence and are very thin and small at guard. I'd pick them to finish in the middle of the pack and if they finish higher than 4th I'd be shocked.
Since Madeira appears to have the most returning starters. I will take them as the favorite.

Exactly what I was thinking as I read the post. Jennings has always had problems with the coach in the past. Iles is a big, strong guy who can JUMP. That kid can get up! I like Burke he's strong for a point guard but not much of an offensive threat. Herkamp will need to stay healthy and Arington needs to be stronger under the basket. Here's what I have...
PG- Garrett Burke Jr. - played some good minutes last year, strong, not a big offensive weapon.
SG- Chase Lunsford Sr. - can score, takes a lot of shots, good 3 pt. shooter, very physical player --> fouls
SF- Scott Herkamp Sr. - dangerous when he gets hot, strong player, can rebound, shoot and play defense, Mariemonts all-around best player, needs to stay healthy
PF- Josh Iles Sr. - not much of a shooter, gets a lot of scores of ORB, great vertical
C- Zach Arington Sr. - 6'8, not physical enough, not a great shooter, needs to learn to use both hands.
Bench
Jacob Griffin, Josh Jennings, Job Jennings, Chip Stewart, Tyler Wood, Taylor Sizer, Alex Goheen, and possibly Stuart Simons?

Ok...first of all, I know this team 100 times better than you do, considering I have played on the same team of all of these players for 3+ years! Iles played basketball his sophomore year and is easily better than Josh Jennings. Jennings has NEVER been able to incorporate his game into the team's offense. How was Lunsford a bench player? Started upwards up 10 games last year and ranked 4th on the team in minutes played. Scott Herkamp is easily the best player they have, IF he can stay healthy. He is a great rebounder for his size, good on defense and can shoot the ball. Can you tell me who on the team is better? I wish the best for Mariemont, but I think that it's just not going to be their year.

I have heard that Iles is playing, but I'm not 100% sure. I haven't seen Burke play in awhile so I'm not sure how much he has improved. I know he is a hard worker so I wouldn't doubt that he's improved. i agree with CHL, i saw krefting at a jv game last year and he had great ball handling skills and an impressive jump shot. I heard he really shot up this summer and is getting close to his dads height of 6' 9
kevin krefting is far from 6 9, i would say at most hes 6 4

I offered him and OJ a spot in my basement when they were next door at NCH a few years ago. I gave them a tour of Finneytown and they liked the school but they were scared to play against the competition in the CHL so they stayed in NCH and beat the MVC teams by an average of 70 points.

Ben Gertz is Reading's best player. And after a year of playing football I am interested in watching him hoop this year. Should be a little more physical. Reading is the only school I have seen where 6'6" + guys play outside. The weightroom wouldn't be a bad idea for some of Reading's big men

Finneytown has a very talented German foreign exchange student. He's 6'3-6'4 and I don't know about his complete game but I've seen a video of him where he's thrown down some pretty sick dunks for a high schooler so I'm assuming he can be an impact player.
Can foreign exchange students play for their "high school"? I don't know anything about that...
Back to Indian Hill. Krefting will be a great player. Also, on a side note, the Wittenberg coach is supposedly signing Krefting sometime this week.

i went to witt and played a varsity sport there. all of my friends at witt went there to play either football or basketball, almost all of them quit by the end of sophomore year. (they didnt quit bc they werent good enough, most of them saw time) the way d3 schools have to operate is to bring in as many kids as they can and hope the numbers work in their favor. almost every one of these guys was offered a "spot" in the rotation that never came to fruition. i think this past academic year (07/08) witt had something like 12-15 freshman go out for basketball. believe me being offered a spot on a team means nothing, the sport i played i came in with 12 other freshman and by the end of sophomore year i was one of only 3 remaining.
Clark W Griswold
11-22-08, 10:09 PM
Every D3 team does that...invite 12-20 freshmen...and it pretty much means yuo are a JV player unless they expect you to be immediate impact player...then attrition sets in

The preseason division polls are out, For d2-4 Madeira is ranked 4 followed by IH at 5, tied for 7th is wyoming, frinneytown is tied for 15th and after that you have dp in a tie for 21st, i didnt see taylor reading or mariemont though
Deer Park, why would someone even vote for them, they had thier best year in what 40 years, is this why?

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS THAT'S WHY........................................Though I wouldn't call a 21 vote an absolute vote in confidence.

I think Mariemont will suprise everyone this year. Of course I do believe Madiera, Wyoming, and IH will be up towards the top of the standings this year but i think Mariemont could possibly be up there with them. What do you guys think?
I think Mariemont has a lot of yappi posters.

what are some of the december 5th match-ups? and who are you're predicting to win?
I predict Mariemont 6th in the league behind Madeira, Indian Hill, Wyoming, Finnytown and Taylor.
So yes, a surprising year.

If this is a fact, and not just another rumor, then this might just put ih over the top. I can't wait to see the games vs Madeira, they're definitely going to be close
This is a rumor. He cant play he has a full ride for football. Its not worth the risks

i'm pretty sure bolsers not gonna risk the scholarship....
in other news, Kevin Krefting had an emergency appendectomy the day after thanksgiving and will be missing the first couple weeks of the season. He's recovered well so far and left the hospital this morning. Keep him in your prayers for a fast recovery

Hello boys:
I've done a bit of scouting of the CHL teams this year and believe that the conference is pretty well balanced. I think you will see quite a few competitive games and will enjoy mens basketball this year. I don't think anyone will run away with the league. The Hills, the Boys, the Stangs, are predicted by those in the know (supposedly) to be on top but, I think the Jacks, the Dev's, the Cats, the Riors (?), and the Finnies (I can't remember) will be very competitive.
Of course, I am objective and have no rooting interest.

Seriously kid, this Krefting kid is getting old.. you talk about him every post.. If i didn't know who you were I'd think you were Mr. Krefting..
Learn when to stop kid..
I know for a fact Ted Bolser is not playing. He has been supporting the team at the games only as the team manager. Coach Moss decided it was too late for him to play. Sorry for the misunderstanding CHLfan.

you need to learn when to respect someone after theyve suffered a serious medical problem. he was going to be a great asset for hte braves and is now out due to medical complications...how is that not relevent.
Also, i am nearly positive that that is not true about bolser, the iu coach would not want him to risk injury in division two high school basketball when he'll be playing for a big ten football team next year
