View Full Version : OHSAA summer ball compliance
Can someone explain the summer ball regulations for high school players? Can a certain team only take 4 players from a high school team for summer ball. I read the OHSAA explanation and it seems like that is the case, can anyone clarify that for me... Is there time frames when that stipulation is only in place? One section says you can only have 4 from the same high school team and then the next section says you can have as many as you want. Which one is it?

Four or less players from one high school is not a problem at any time for a summer or fall team. You can have an unlimited number of players from one high school together from June 1 through July 31 (this also extends to national championship events beyond July 31, I believe until Labor Day). Overall, another idiotic OHSAA rule that does nothing but hurt kids, especially in May when most high school teams are out of the tournament by the middle of the month.

tribefan721: AGREED You are correct IDIOTIC is the word. Let the kids play as soon as they can. Some may wit for two to three weeks.
I believe you can have only four from one High school if the team is coached by the head coach or one of the paid assistants from their respective high schools. If that is not the case then you can have as many as you want. You can only play official games from June 1-July 31 unless you qualified within that time frame for a national tournament.

This is incorrect, read above or take a look at the rules at OHSAA.org.

Which part is incorrect? The part about the head coach or assistants is correct; although, they don't have to be PAID assistants. ANY assistants are restricted....

A summer team can have any number of players from same HS team.
IF the summer team has more than four players from the same HS team, then there are restrictions on when they can play (June 1 - July 31, can go up to Labor Day if proceeding through a national qualifying tournament), practice (same time frame), training (off the field, organized, same time frame), or even hold tryouts.
If the summer team has four or fewer from the same team, then they can start playing, practicing, training, etc. as soon as their season is over and can continue until the start of the next HS baseball season (when pitchers/catchers start).
Contact by interscholastic coaches (paid or unpaid) is covered under a separate rule, and is limited to 10 days (total of all coaches) from June 1 to July 31, unless the summer team is under the 50% rule, which for baseball is 4 players from the same HS. There's the same exception for national qualifying tournaments, but an interscholastic coach can only coach a summer team to Labor Day, not beyond.

If this is the case, then how do so many high school coaches (mostly asistant coaches) get away with coaching there players in the sumer?

I can give an opinion-
The OHSAA is more of an administrative organization, and at time an arbiter, but not really active in enforcement. That role is left to the individual schools/school systems. Sports rules enforcement isn't really high on any superintendent's priority list, maybe some principals but not many, so that leaves it to the AD's. Now a lot of AD's are also coaches (in some sport), and the concept of a coach reporting a coach within the same school isn't exactly something that many want to get into.
I'm not saying people are looking the other way, but perhaps not even looking is a better description. No one wants to see it, so they don't look for it and it happens.
No disrespect to any, but it happens too much.
