View Full Version : Tyler Newhart of West Branch
First off I am not one specific "team" fan, I am just a baseball fan. So I know I can speak from objectivity. I have read posts on the player Tyle Newhart and the unfortunate negative comments about his performance. The player has been offered to play for Wright State which obviously the coaches there are fully equiped with education about who has what it takes to pitch at the next level. They abviously see potential. Some of the players I see doing very well in HS and lsound like they will be all world because of their HS either go to small colleges or/and never have any chance beyond college. What dominates in HS is usually junk ball pitchers. The guys who throw slower and hit you with off speed, off speed, off speed. This is usually because of a lack of a 86plus mph fastball and to survive they throw junk. At the next level (collegiate baseball) you can throw off speed stuff and it is absolutely necessary BUT, you can not throw it every game all day long. The hitters are the best of the best at D-1 schools. They will destroy those pitchers. The guys that are recruited and succeed are those that throw 86 plus and have off speed stuff. It makes the 86 plus look faster. Most (not all) HS coaches are lesser at coaching than summer travel team coaches. It you look at a team that has talent and they are sruggling in HS, years of experience watching HS baseball tells me it's the coaching. What you can throw has just as much to do with what is called to throw during a game as well. I'm not sure if Newharrt calls his own game or not but that also must be looked at.

3, so your saying if you don't throw hard then you won't go to a division 1 college? I'm sure guys like Maddux and Moyer threw high 70's or low 80's in high school and look at what they've did.
Newhart is a very good pitcher and may do some good things when he gets to Wright State, partly because he will finally have some good coaching, but he won't be like other pitchers from a few years past like Smith, Gill, and Bates.

I still say newhart's one of the best pitchers in the state. How is West Branch's defense? Offense? From reading the online threads on this site about west branch and in my local paper, the beacon journal, it seems to me based off of what i have read that west branch isn't doing well defensively and offensively this year. Pitcher's can't be expected to do everything like a few people on this site seem to think they should. You need defense. That's the reason why woodridge is 10-3 right now. in all honesty, they should be around 8-5 right now because their offense is just isn't cutting it.

Newhart is one of the top pitchers in state and had numerous Div 1 offers.
I don't think it is a stretch to say that the Pro Scouts that were at his last game understand talent and where he projects.

Newhart is an excellent pitcher and player off the field hes friendly always smiling and throws excellent. he did turn down numerous D-1 offers including Xavier, Akron, and Buffalo he chose Wright State for many reasons and contrary to what has been mentioned above West Branch is doing well this year they are 6-2 and 5-1 in a tough NBC they have been doing fairly well defensively and have scored at least 6 runs per game with a few games scoring over 12. Newhart is a great pitcher and doesnt always get the credit he deserves.
I wouldn't worry too much about Newhart. Maybe he doesn't get the credit on Yappi, but he does from the scouts. And he certainly does from batters that have faced him.

I 100% agree with what you are saying. You don't have to throw ched to get the looks. If you get guys out and win games you will get looks. But your team has to win as well. Nobody wants to scout a loser.
I have put down Newhart alot, and I still feel that he is an overrated high school pitcher. Yes, he has received many offers and that is great...but he hasn't put up overwhelming stats. And like BIGSTICK said...he won't be like pitchers such as Kyle Smith or Justin Gill. Next season and beyond when he gets around great coaching...he will put up good college numbers and will be a good college pitcher. But in High School I think people give him more than what he is actually worth. Saying he is overrated and saying he's not a good pitcher are 2 different things...I've hit against him and as a hitter I do respect his ability, but I've also played against Smith and Gill. Newhart is nowhere near that level and some people make him out to be.
Instead of bashing me for what I said on here...all I ask is that you send a PM to discuss it on there. I'm saying this now because I know it's coming.

Newhart is a very good HS pitcher with a bright future. Maybe too bright for some on here to be comfortable with.

I am not sticking my nose directly into a junior in high school's personal life, but at the time I know of offers from Akron, Buffalo, Xavier, Wright State, Cleveland State, West Virginia and Marshall. I know he visited Cincinatti last summer too, but not sure about a offer.
I am sure more could of popped up, but I know he committed very early to some great coaches down there at Wright State after having a great fall on the Midwest Redbirds. Last fall he was just as highly rated as Gill and Smith were at the time of their fall Senior years.
I think point is, that anyone from the area should be proud of any kid that is getting the looks that he is getting and success. I am amazed of the misinformed posters that think they know or like to pass judgement on how good a kid is or the projection of the kid to the next levels. I guess that is the fun in having a open dialogue on a high school message board with so called "insiders".
Most of the people on here calling him overated are either kids who are playing or have played against him. They might have gotten a few hits off of him and are jealous that he is going D1.

When Gill and Smith were Seniors, they were both in the top 10 in the state according to Buckeye Scout. Isn't Newhart somewhere around the 30-40 range. So I'm not so sure that he was as highly rated.

This entire thread is ridiculous.....WHO CARES? ...There are players NAMES brought up on this site, everyday....Whether they are getting good recognition or bad, it varies!! Jealousy MAY BE part of it, and knowledge of that particular player, may be another part of it....WHO CARES?
Your gonna have some people that stick up for this player, and others who don't! Isn't that what "opinions" are all about?.....Tyler Newhart is a great pitcher, that got offers from some fine colleges....He's NOT the first kid in this area with such, and I am sure he will not be the last.
But, he is, and has been put up high on the chopping block right now...And when other players can come out and hit him, and teams can get a win on him, you are gonna hear about it...THAT IS FOR SURE!!.....Jealousy though, nahhhhh! Like I said, he is a good pitcher, that got some offers. Lets see what he is able to do at the NEXT level...Because it is definately NO walk in the park there.......

Considering he's actually better and proven to be better than most of the pitchers ranked above him. the Buckeye Scout bases a lot of their rankings of projectability.

Obviously...because if they based it on how much success you have, 3rd in the NBC every year would have him screwed.

Of those schools you named...only 2 I know offered him and he accepted the Wright State offer. He is a youngster with a good arm...as for him in the next step of college baseball he will need to come up with a strong 3rd out pitch. He will get a fair shot at WSU and made a good decision.

I agree. Like I've said before...when Newhart gets to WSU he will develop the "little things" he needs to make the jump from a good pitcher to a great pitcher

I agree that he does not have the potential now to be a good as Smith and Gill. A big reason for my opinion is that Smith and Gill have the best pitching coach around who has been turning out professional pitchers for years. Kent State flat out makes all pitchers better. There is no debating that. Not to say Wright State is a bad school but the number of players drafted from Kent State is astounding.

I knew someone would bring up the rare exception to the rule> Contrary to what you thought, Maddux did throw 90 plus in HS with nasty stuff so can't use him. Moyer threw upper 80's with nasty stuff. I'll lean and give you Moyer but 1 player out of how many thousands of players playing D-1 baseball. You have to look at the rule of thumb majority.

High school stats are so overrated and if you talk to college and professional recruiters....mean little. They are stupid. They no most are inflated to draw attention to the schools and player. They know errors are sometimes called hits to pad stats. I know at least 2 schools that anytime you get on base less a walk it's considered a hit. Pitchers sometimes throw no hitters against very poor teams. Looks good on paper but scouts aren't stupid. HS school stats are for scrap books. Looks good when you get older but to those paying kids to play for them, they know all schools that the player will face will not drop balls, make tons of errors or have 9 hitters who can't hit a beach ball. So stats are fun to see but if anyone thinks they get $$$$ from colleges or scouts you are misinformed.
