View Full Version : High school teams with 3+ NBA players?
A few years ago I did some research (I can't recall what prompted it, but I dug pretty deep) trying to find out which high school team contained the most future NBA players. I'm not talking about high school programs or the schools themselves, but the most future NBA players on one specific team, in one season. My defintion of "playing in the NBA" is a that a player has to have appeared in an NBA game, not been on injured reserve or played in summer leagues or anything like that. So far, I've discovered two teams with four future NBAers, and a handful with three such players (Believe it or not, there are dozens with at least two future NBA players, too numerous to list here). Anyhow, here's my list, can anybody add to it?
1983 Baltimor Dunbar
*Reggie Lewis
*Reggie Williams
*Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues
*David Wingate
1993 Oak Hill Academy (Best high school team I've ever seen, in person)
*Jeff McInnis
*Jerry Stackhouse
*Mark Blount
*Makhtar N'Diaye
1958 Philadelphia Overbrook
*Walt Hazzard
*Wali Jones
*Wayne Hightower
1971 Mount Vernon (NY)
*Rudy Hackett
*Earl Tatum
*Gus Williams
1975 Los Angeles Verbum Dei
*David Greenwood
*Keith Anderson
*Roy Hamilton
1989 Jersey City St. Anthony
*Bobby Hurley
*Terry Dehere
*Rodrick Rhodes
1990 Detroit Southwestern
*Howard Eisley
*jalen Rose
*Voshon Lenard
1991 Maywood, IL, Proviso East
*Donnie Boyce
*Sherrell Ford
*Michael Finley
1991 Oak Hill Academy
*Corey Alexander
*Ben Davis
*Thomas "Junior" Burrough
Anyone?

I do not know if this counts because all of those players got drafted in the NBA but some never got the chance to play.
1998 St. Edward's

Wasn't there a Columbus East team with 3 NBA players on it, somewhere around late 60's early 70's?
Close.
1968-69 Columbus East was absolutely loaded, with 6-1 Dwight "Bo" Lamar, 6-6-6 Ed Ratleff, and 6-7 Nick Connor the three big guns.
Lamar led the nation in scoring at SW Louisiana and played 3 seasons in the ABA and 1 in the NBA. Ratleff played at Long Beach St. for a young coach named Jerry Tarkanian before 5 years as a Houston Rocket, and Connor was a standout at Illinois before being selected in the 10th round of the 1973 NBA Draft, but he never actually played in the NBA.

I believe Logan was picked with the last pick in the 1st round by Golden St. but could never come to a contract agreement and they also happened to have a point guard by the name of Gilbert Arenas. Steve played in the NBA developmental league and that was about it.
Sam Clancy was drafted in the second round by Philadelphia but a knee injury plagued his career. I'm not sure what ever happened to him.
Although Jawad won a national championship at North Carolina, he was never drafted. His teammates Sean May, Raymond Felton, Marvin Williams and one other (names escapes me) were all drafted that year.

Since Eaglepride cheated with offering a trio with only two NBA players, let me offer the following from Cleveland St. Joseph (minus the the Villa Angela):
The 1982 St. Joe Vikings
Stan Kimbrough: Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings
Kevin Edwards: Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Vancouver Grizzlies (NBA)

They must've caused some hellacious match up problems for Ohio teams in those days.

What's that last 6? Can't be his shoe size, and 6 seems a little small for a guy that tall!

Allright I'm going to age myself here but that Columbus East team was legend in Ohio at the time.
I do think there may have been a DeMatha teams or teams as well as Louisvile Male teams that had several NBA players on them.

Had Bryant Bowden been a little bigger, he may have made it 3.
Had Bryant Bowden been a little bigger, he may have made it 3.Yeah he was that tweener size. 6-8 but not quick enough to play SF or tall enough to play PF or C.

Although only one of their players made it into the NBA, the Indiana East Chicago Washington team of 1971 had an interesting 3. 6'6" Ulysses "Junior"
Bridgeman, 6"7" Tim Stoddard, and 6'5" Pete Trgovich started on their frontline. Bridgeman played at Louisville, Stoddard at North Carolina State, and Trgovich at UCLA At one time all three were starting and UCLA, NCS, and Louisville were ranked 1, 2, and 3 in the country. Stoddard was a MLB pitcher for many years and Bridgeman was a multi time NBA all-star. Also the 1969 Indianapolis Washington team started 6'7" George McGinnis and 6"9' Steve Downing. Both starred at IU and McGinnis played in the NBA for the Pacers and 76ers. Downing played for the Celtics. Perhaps two of the best high school teams in history.
probably the smallest school with a nba player is georgetown high school with brian grant.

Tim Stoddard was on the Wolfpack national title team, wasn't he, Bowie?
Trgovich was on the floor (and had the final missed tip-in) for UCLA when their 88 game win streak was snapped at South Bend vs ND. That missed tip followed TWO missed tips by Walton and Myers. (Although I was pulling for UCLA... that game remains my favorite basketball game of all time. :) )
