View Full Version : Reading Baseball
For those who would like to comment on how this years team might do. Positions that will be battled for and who might be the surprises this year. I look for this Blue Devil team to compete for the CHL.

lacinak will pitch some on varsity , austin pavilack and mason antoun (freshman) will have the chance to land an out field position on varsity
Hopefully those kids can contribute. Even at Reading, freshmen to varsity is a big jump. As long as their fundamentals are decent, they have a chance. We should have good comp. in the outfield. Garret Edwards will fill one of the spots.
I know that Reading has Started some pretty good freshmen in past years in Corey Woodward and Tyler Bessey. Garrett Edwards also played a little as a Freshmen. Do you think the Pavilack,Antoun, and lacinak kid are at the same levels these 3 were?

pavilack and lacinak are undersized but they are hard working players and will work for a position on varsity..coments
Tyler Hitz catcher,no varsity exp. though. Tyler Bessey at SS, Corey Woodward at 2b. Garret Edwards OF. Who's your 3b,1b,RF,LF.? When Corey pitches, you have Dustin Hinkin as a utility INF. Alot of pos. up for grabs.

exactly that is why i think these kids will get valuable experience this year ...antoun and pavilack can play infield and outfield...lacinak can pitch and play outfield
Well the 25th is creeping up. Anything new from the ball team? When does basketball end for the Devils? I have heard rumors we will be playing D5-6. I personally don't know what Reading baseball is anyways. Does anyone catch besides Hitz? Hopefully Hitz catches pretty decent, such an important pos. Drop and block, drop and block. Can't wait to hear the crack of the bat!!!
i know that ben gertz catches as well
I have heard he catches. He seems tall and lenky to be a catcher. Alot of deep backstops!!!!!!!
I think they should win every game Woodward pitches. And they always seem to hit well. The question is how their pitching will be after Woodward and their defense. But Reading should definately compete in the CHL this year.

Pavilack and Antoun And Lacinak have a great chance at seeing some playing time at varsity as freshmen. They play the game really good Pavilack can be put anywhere and still preform great Lacinak is a great pitcher and 1st baseman and Antoun is a great 3rd baseman

woodward is a very good pitcher and should be pretty hard to beat this year

Pavilack and Antoun need to work on the Suicide Squeeze. The most important play in baseball.
These young men sound like good ball players. We do need a 3b. and a 1b. Lacinak will be nice to have also(lefty). good luck to ya boys!!!

I played with Hitz for a few years in summer ball. Solid hitter and is deceptively fast. He's a pitcher's catcher. Doesn't have the strongest arm, but he is smart and calls a good game. He is also a strong leader. He should be fine as Reading's starter.
Dustin Hinken was on the team as well, and I can attest to his ability as well. He's spectacular in the field- excellent range and quickness. He's also good at the top or hidden in the bottom of the lineup.

Not for sure what impact the frosh will have but right now Pitching; Woodward,Bassler,Gertz,Manis. All with decent arms.Bassler seems to mix pitches well and Gertz and Manis will give you a chance to win. 1b.Bassler,2b.woodward,ss.Bessey,3b.Hinken or Gertz. OF-Edwards,and not sure about other spots.
Corey Woodward has a partial tear of a tendon in his ankle. Should be ready in about two weeks.
Looks like Reading opens up scrimmaging CHCA March 20, then Norwood the 25. Hows the team looking? Hopefully there are enough kids to battle for pos.Guys pay attention to your coaches and learn how to play the game better. You have a chance to go along ways this year.Work on all those boring little things(covering 1st base,pick-off pos. etc.) They will win you games. Remember the colleges and the pros work on the same things. Good luck.

Ya, i agree with TCM this year Reading has a chance to do something special , a great team Reading has and they cant waste the oppurtunity..Baseball is finally Here! Cant wait for the first game good luck guys
Saw alittle of the practice today.Nice looking squad. A few things caught my eye. One,your BP coach struggled to throw strikes, so not alot of good comes out of it except maybe some bad habbits. Two,watching pitchers on pick-offs.Remember guys, you throw to 1st,cover 1st.You throw to 3rd,cover 3rd. Do not stand around.Sorry to say this, but if you stand around, baseball becomes boring. Always be ready to cover an open bag.I heard a father say that the young man that did not cover a bag was a JV kid.Guess what, It's time to learn.I saw a third baseman run a kid almost to the catcher on a pick-off. Run the kid back to the bag he came from. You will lose games if you continue this practice. Next Thur.up in Xenia....good luck Devils

head coach, as usual,is muehlenkamp assisted by hayes and imhoff
Jv coaches are lunsford and a new guy named katchman...
Good start for the Devils after one week.(3-0).The boys are playing very good baseball with hardly any errors.Garret Edwards,Cody Manis,Hinken, Antoun, and Bessey have been a huge lift for the team. Woodward and Basler are throwing well.Tyler Hitz is doing a great job behind the plate. Good luck guys, you have the makings of a very good team.
Reading continues to swing good bats.Tyler Hitz doubled and homered(his 2) and Garret Edwards also hit a dinger. The boys are playing good baseball and should be a positive sign going into play against Madiera Friday. Wed. have a pesky Taylor team with Woodward on the hill. Ben Gertz pitched well against DP, he just needs to mix his pitches.

yeah pesky taylor will be swept off of their feet today it will be nothing like saturdays game except for those last two innings, and he pitched well? he threw ALL fast balls i think he needs more pitches period
I was trying to be nice. Gertz did throw nothing but Fastballs and DP busted them.He has to work on mixing speeds or he wont have much success pitching varsity baseball. Wed.---the boys crushed Taylor with Garret Edwards leading the charge, hitting another triple.Tyler Hitz continues to swing a good bat, with the freshmen Antoun playing great batting in the two hole.Keep playing well boys, the better CHL teams are around the corner.

did woodward pitch today (tuesday)? who threw friday/monday?
Sitting at 7-2,5-2 league play.Tough loss to a very good Mariemont team.Have Basler throwing Friday night at Koenig. Chris always gives us a chance to win.Great defensive play by Dustin Hinken at 3rd.Picked a hard liner, touched 3rd for the force and threw a BB across the IF for the double play.Super play. I wish you guys would be alittle more agressive at the plate.Alot of ya's seem to be 0-1,1-2 and hitting defensively instead of looking dead red and busting it.Be agressive.I'm alot old school, but two of ya's came up in the last inning, down 9-1, and swung at the first pitch.I would like to see ya's take a few there.I guess that's why I don't coach anymore! You need to regroup and take Mariemont Friday night.Good luck guys.

true, it seems like just about every batter is taking until they get a strike, every at bat.

Mariemont is D3. Reading is only a couple of boys under 3 and they are the smallest school in the CHL.

I was at the Mariemont-Reading game yesterday and I thought that Reading would hit Masur better than they did. Masur threw a first pitch curveball to about every batter. Also, he left a lot of balls high that could have been hit. I guess we'll see how they do tonight against Simons.
I thought Reading would hit better also.I'm not 100% sure on this but the boys for some reason have to take a strike.I can't stand seeing my 3 hole hitter with a 2-0 count taking a belt high fastball. Now if I'm wrong, I'm sorry, but we are either the most non-aggressive team in the CHL, or we take a strike. We are starting to run more though.Stealing bases left and right. I wish the boys would challenge more catchers though. Make them throw down to a base,it's HS baseball, anything could happen, just be aggressive.Dustin Hinkin and Ben Gertz are playing great baseball. You boys have been fun to watch the last few games.Gertz was on fire against Walnut Hills.Way to play guys!!!!

I agree about challenging the catchers more. It obviously depends on the situation but in HS baseball it's not an easy play for a catcher to make a good throw and for the fielder to catch the throw clean and lay down the tag.

I understand theyre trying to make the pitchers work and throw more pitches, but they need to swing at the best pitches they can get, and it seemed to me like reading takes those, which are usually the 1st strike they let go.
Wow! seems like a long time since we even beat Wyoming, not to mention run ruling. The W school is obvisiously down this year, but still good effort.Reading just hit!!!!Good job men,way to swing the bats. Cody Manis had good wood at least twice,Garret Edwards smashed a 2 or 3 run jack, just an impressive display of hitting. No let downs, take Wyoming Wed.

And often the biggest factors: pitchers not holding the runners well, being too predictable, and being slow to the plate. With even average speed many high school runners could steal a base against even the best MLB catchers.
