I will request from Yappi to make this a sticky thread.

2007 Grads nationally, and in Ohio, was a banner year. I was able to watch some of these kids play the past 3 summers, met lots of them and their parents, and had great conversations with them since many were going thru the same recruiting process.

This thread is meant for those to share the new experiences of college baseball starting with the Fall workouts and into their 1st season. It may be helpful for the next class as a means of gathering information and a preview of what they may expect when it is their turn.

College players and parents are encouraged to share their experiences.

Go back a step and help others to selecting the right school.
Is it the program?
Coaching staff?
The playing opportunity?
The cabbage?
D1.D2,D3,NAIA,Juco?
Degree?

It's to late for those with bad GPA's but still time for ACT/SAT scoring to help start the process.I know a few young people that will be forced to go JUCO
because of low GPA/ACT scores.

With boys like yours and others that are looking at schools now getting calls
to come visit, the selection process is difficult because they are all saying I see your child starting in this spot their freshman year and just wondering who and how to trust.

I see so many people switching schools/programs and they all can't because of teachers/classes.
The 2008 class will also be a banner year with a tremendous inpact on all level of college play and maybe even the draft.

It would be nice to see you start the process of selection before the process of how they are weeding out the weak.

I hear that maybe some movement from Miami to Kent State might materialize
or has??????What's up.We might have to call Kent the Yankees if they continue loading up with all the top talent.

earholem, not quite sure what you are asking, so I will try to attempt some type of reply.

There is plenty of advice out there regarding the academic side of things. It gives both players and coaches more options, especially now with the Grant changes that will go into effect.

Regarding the 2007 class, many "authorities" have said it was the best class in well over 15 years. Lets see what comes of the 2008 class, but as of now, it is considered lean nationally. It is the 2008 college draft eligibles that are highly touted.

The unusually high # of transfers is mainly based on players, and coaches realigning their rosters for the upcoming 27/35 rule change, which includes a one-year sitout for the player.

The various FITS of where to go to school, let alone play college baseball is unique to each player, but generally the rule of thumb is attend a school that satisfies the academic needs, affordable to the family, and on the baseball side, one where they love you as much or more as you love them.

Any coach that says you will be a starter is one to usually shy away from. Fall workouts lay the groundwork, pre-season practice paints them a picture, then when the opportunity arises, you gotta keep a hold on it by producing.

As far as Miami movement and a Yankee connection, that would be news to many.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, very informative.Hope to see some more info.

Good answer BENSPAPA,
You hit it right on the head as far as what to look for and the reason of transfer. Not always easy to get perfect fit for school. You should go where you feel most comfortable in the overall school, like what if the coach left or what if baseball enede (injury) type questions.
Transfers should diminish with the "sit-out-a-year" rule now in affect for next year.
The Miami Hurricanes kid, Michael Sanders came to Kent as Stricklin had recruited him while he coached at Georgia Tech, so that's the connection. Sanders was from Atlanta area.

I am playing college ball and it is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I have met so many people i never gave any thought to.
When you do decide on where you are going to play college ball just go into the fall with an open mind and do whats asked of you and just be that player they recruited, don't try an be someone you're not.

Benspapa, read about the fall games on Kent's website, but it did not give much detail. How did Humphreys do, along with Bartholomew? Also, just curious who caught because there was no indication who was behind the plate or who was expected to be there. Glad to see Carp back, Good luck to the Flashes Players. Hope your son had a great freshman year.

KSU is stacked in the outfield.
It will be very difficult for any freshmen to crack the KSU outfield this season.

Release: 10/30/2007

MAC Tournament MVP Jason Patton seemed to be at the plate in every one of Kent State’s key spots during the course of the conference tournament. His coach talked about his off-season and fall.

“Jason was able to put on some weight, and showed a lot of increased strength. He had a very nice fall for us.”

Patton is a member of what Stricklin feels is his club’s deepest area – the outfield. The skipper thinks his team goes seven or eight deep in the outfield. Also included in that group is Jared Humphreys – a sophomore who missed the 2007 campaign due to injury. Stricklin called Humphreys his “best athlete.”

The article didn't talk about a couple of the other outfielders. Connor Egan had a great fall and so did Freshman Ben Klafczynski. They both showed they are ready to contribute....and if there is a better defensive outfielder in the MAC than Bartholomew, I want to see him play. Humphries hit the ball better than Bart, so I he may start, but boy are those two fast and good defensively. Bart will be in at the end of a lot of games defensively with a lead if he isn't starting. I guess its a good problem to have.

KSU's Fall Summary Article stated "The skipper thinks his team goes seven or eight deep in the outfield". In looking at the KSU roster, I only see seven (7) outfielders listed: Bartholomew, Egan, Humphries, Gallas, Patton, Klafczynski, and Koch. Does anybody know the 8th outfielder? I would assume Gallas (soph), Patton (Jr), and Humphries (soph) as your leading candidates for starting jobs. Thoughts? Does Patton have a chance to be drafted after this season? I'm sure Gallas has excellent MLB potential if he's able to put up similar numbers this year, and then follow that up with a strong Jr. year campaign. I've seen this kid play in summer's past. He has great power and tremendous speed on the base paths. From the comments above, it also sounds like Bartholomew, Egan, and Klafczynski also had a solid fall campaign. This looks like a young group. Will there be enough playing time to make everyone happy?

I agree, the talent is there. They can play 4 of these guys most of the time, one of them as DH. Somewhere along the way someone will get dinged up (hope not though) and they will need the help. they don't have depth across the board so hopefully they can stay health, especially the arms.

Yeah, pretty disappointing. I have been following it in Collegiate Baseball magazine and quite a few of the coaches hoped the NCAA would do more. What you have is what the magazine thouhgt would happen. It seems they could up the ante a little, like at least 50% per player. That would only require an increase of 3.33 scholarships (11.7 up to 15). It's hard to believe that they can only offer that little for a sport so demanding; 56 games in a little over 3 months, but its not the money sport.

P.S. - Good job Zach. Always good to hear about the kids doing well.

Flashfan, with all do respect to your post, not everyone was/is lucky enough to give up their awarded baseball scholarship from one college and then transfer and take someone elses awarded scholarship. Oblivious I guess.

Flashfan, it was your post and your words not mine, and you are right, luck had nothing to do with it, and my son is a fine young respected great man, not a kid, and you don't even know my son.

I am the farthest thing from being angry, actually, we are the happiest people that you would ever want to meet, living in the South helps to be happy too, we thank the Lord each and every day that our son is able to put any uniform on and play the great game of baseball, hundreds of thousands of young men would love to be doing it, and any parent dreams of their son doing it, and it is a great honor and opportunity, and is by the Grace of God.

The problem is that your idea of cheap shots is different than mine, some cheap shots are done behind the scenes and some cheap shots are not really cheap shots at all, but honesty, that some have a hard time swallowing.

If you want to continue to post your opinions, without any regards to who might be reading them, how they may be interpreted, or how someone else may feel about them, then I pray for you too.

I read this online the other day concerning the new NCAA Baseball changes, it said that the families that donated the most money to the programs would get what they wanted out of the coaches and colleges, and that angers me too! How do you feel about that? Honestly?

Back to the topic, I do not like the changes and I think it will force college coaches to let more two sport athletes do that in college, like play football and walk on baseball, that is what my younger son is looking to do.

NEWZIP
01-27-08, 12:08 PM
Flashfan, this is my last reply on this topic, and from your response, shows me you are still obviously acting oblivious. We both know we are too old to be acting like this on here too.

You Said this....
But I guess we have to be realistic about politics, everything is about the money.

Glad to hear you put that in writing and admit that finally, I found that out about a month ago when we received our Kent Blue and Gold Newsletter that showed all of the families that donated, and your familie's names showed a lot of money donated, to our around $800. But we had an athlete at the college at the time and you did not. That is politics at it's best. Someone extremely close to the program at my son's former college, finally gave us the low down in who approached who first in the transfer, when the deal started happening, and the lies that surrounded it. Now, bottom line is that all worked out for the best, and it usually does. The remark that I made about honestly, is that, you seem to act like you had no idea as to how my son was treated and had no idea that he was going to be ran off to let your son come, but the honesty is, you knew well before anyone else, and you knew what you had to do to make that happen, and politics and money played a huge part. I think that is great you are looking out for your son's best interests, that is what a parent should do. Let's put it like this out in the open so others can benefit from it....before my son and your son decided on a college they looked at the situation based on their position, right? So if they had a Jr catcher for instance, they knew that the possibility of playing was good, if their was one Jr catcher, one Sophomore catcher and they just recruited a new incoming catcher, then you have to look at the backgrounds of that catcher, right? This may sound a little arrogant, considering my son has not yet played in his first college game, but if I was choosing to transfer or was a Sr in HS, deciding on catching, and I looked at my son's, or your son's, background, skills, etc. then that would impact my decision, as I would think that I would be sitting behind a pretty good catcher for three to four years, or try to beat him out of the spot, which is hard to do as an incoming freshman. I know the entire circumstance now and all that surrounded it, so it angers me that you act like, and come on here and act like you feel bad for "kids" that it happens to, when in fact, you played a huge role in it. It happens and until it happens to your son, then you don't really understand what others feel, hopefully, with the changes it will not happen much more. Seems awful strange that one young man left Kent State and went 10 minutes down the road and the others stayed. When is the last player to ever transfer or get ran off at Kent? I would really like to know those stats. You also state that I got a "raw deal", but infact it was not about me, it is about how my son found out the hard way in his young life about the real world. No one gets a "raw deal" when you are getting the opportunity to play a sport you love, like I said before, hundreds of thousands would love the opportunity to put on the uniform, so I remind my son's of that almost daily.

As for the two sport in college, my youngest son is looking to that as a possibility, as I think most others are too with the changes.

Good Luck to all young people following their dreams!

NEWZIP

Benspapa, you are correct and that is a very good summary of just how much time it takes, along with the time you spend on your game on your own. It would be very difficult to play two sports in college, I agree with that, and never said that my son was going to do it, just kicking it around, looking at the possibilities, talking to colleges about it, etc. This mostly happens at a smaller Div 1 schools, and lower divisions, however, we have found this to be true at some large Div 1 as well. I can honestly say I don't know anyone personnally that is doing it, but it is possible. I too say good luck to anyone that can do it all and make an impact.

Everyone really knows what happened anyway and it is over. Actions speak louder than words, so let's play some ball, somewhere, anywhere for crying out loud...lol!!

No hard feelings Flashfan, we are all in the business for the same reasons, some just play the game a little different than others, good luck to all players everywhere. Too bad things did not work out with his first choice of transfer and he had to end up at Kent. I think he will do a great job for them there.

I played college ball and can tell you that the hardest part form me was being recruited. I really thought that DIV1 was the only way to go. I overlooked a lot of southern small D-1 Schools and Div2 and 3 as well. First Infor I give is check out and research all of the schools that are recruiting your son. Next realize if your son does get the chance to play college ball that he may not get to play every day every inning like he has for his whole life. It is a lot of work and believe me the guys that have been there pay their dues! Playing time eventually is earned.

On the Scholarship issue: I Think it STINKS!
My first scholarship was BOOKS.
Then it was a couple grand
I finally got all of my tuition by my senior year. So college Loans still found their way to me.
It is funny that a 4th stringer in football will get 100% but me as a starter form most of my 4 years only got my tuition payed for completely my senior year. I am happy that I at least got the money I did get though.

Another thing to remember is that it is now a full year deal, playing and practicing never stops from fall ball to individual practices, weight room time daily, In season practice (which always go over the maximum allowed) and games, all of that while earning a college degree.
I would do it all over again though, I LOVED every minute!!!
Good luck to everyone being recruited!

The scholarship issue in college baseball: Bogus; that is the best word to describe it. Baseball definitely gets the shaft compared to other sports when it comes to scholarships. Enough on that though because there's nothing I can do about it. I am very excited for this college baseball season to get going. Today was the first "official" day of team practice in the NCAA. Obviously that doesn't mean it's the first practice, because this is a full year business. They have just been having "unofficial" practices instead. First games are less than a month away! Good luck to Kent State hopefully they can maintain and improve that preseason ranking. I have a feeling that Ohio State is going to surprise some people this year in the Big 10. I think they will compete with Michigan for the title this year. No more sweeps! Anyway, can't wait for this season to kick off.

I assume you were at this past weekends games with Ball State. It sure was cold, but I'll take cold over not playing at all. My son plays for Ball State - he is now a senior & I can tell you that the next 4 years will just fly by.

I know that it is extremely hard for Northern teams to build a good record down south, but I think that as parents, some of our most fun times have been following the team down south early in the year. It's almost like mini-vacations.

I think the Flashes will be fine this year......too much talent on that team to not win games.

How about the Miami Redhawks-WOW. 5-17 and 1-5 in the MAC. I know they started slow last year as well, but may be too much to ask this season.

The Miami Redhawks record really surprised me. I expected more of them considering their nice facilities and all. Is the coach relatively new?

This season is Coach Simonds third season at Miami, he spent one season as the HC at XU before replacing Tracy Smith at Miami. I know he spent some time at Miami as an assistant under Smith at Miami. They were swept by an Eastern Michigan team last weekend that came into the series with 2 wins.

I pitch for Eastern Michigan (just getting off the DL this week), and Kent just seems like they are not a very hard hitting team with the bats. We got through 2 innings with them before we got snowed out, and we got up 3-0 in that short amount of time. They have good pitching, as always, with there starter topping 94 against us in the snow! We have been hitting well so thats how we got the quick 3 runs, but I couldn't believe how weak they looked. I watched their BP when they were warming up and it seemed like they were using dead bats for their BP and then brought them into the game. It was really bad.

Article
coach Scott Strickland ??
- that's an easy one to get wrong, take about 10 seconds to look up??

Article
When White returned the next season, expecting to play, he didn't. He was told if the starter went down, he'd play.

The starter went down and he didn't play.

- Talked to Will Vazquez (the starting catcher at Kent last year) yesterday and he said he never missed a game due to injury. Played in all but 2 or 3 games I believe. But don't let the facts get in the way of trying to make your point

Article
going 3 for 4 with a double

- according to Akrons website he was 3-6 with a double & a triple ?? U of A is probably wrong.

Here are a couple of facts...
- Brandon White is getting more playing time in the OF lately for Akron and doing a great job with the opportunities he's had this year.

- The Kent - Akron series will be a great series as usual

- Kent State Coach Scott "Strickland" started the Akron - Kent charity game that raised $10,000 for Akron Childrens Hospital... what a monster

I had the opportunity to talk with a few parents of Akron U. players currently on the roster. From what I understand, BW does not have the talent to be a D1 catcher. Looks like he can hit the ball, but perhaps Coach S's evaluation of BW as a Catcher wasn't that great. I hope BW finds a place at Akron at another position other than Catcher. In the end, it might work out well for everyone.

I agree. I recently made a detour on my way back to DC from Pinehurst to stop in Kinston (NC) to see the Indians' high single A team play. I'd give the moon and the stars to be one of those kids out there having a great time getting paid to play baseball.

They live for free in some fairly average apartments in a not-so-great, small minor league town. In fact, downtown Kinston is downright depressing. However, they have a great baseball stadium, and it would be a blast to be out there playing. I say live it up while you're still 20/21/22/23 years old.

Indiansbaseball05, I hear what you are saying, most important word in the article is "Chance." I also agree with you when you say that Stricklin raised 10K for charity and I agree he would be best suited for charity work instead of coaching and recruiting.

Tapneo, I hear what you are saying too, and could really careless where a player plays including my son, because I can't see him or don't know anything about him if he is in the dugout. I am also glad you got the opportunity to talk to Akron parents about players ability and positions they should be in. Living so far away from North Ohio, I must miss all of the meetings that the coaches has with the player's parents getting their opinions on what kid should play what position and if they can hit the ball or pitch. I am just thankful for the group of parents at Akron that spoke up and said "Hey coach, White can't catch, but I think this guy can play in the OF and possibly hit"

I told Brandon when he went to college that you have to hit the ball to play, you have to play any position that the coach/team needs you to play to win one of those rings that you want so bad to win. But before all of that can take place, you have to stay out of trouble and make the grades. I would like to think that is what most parents would tell their son too.

I am just really just kidding with both of you, well not really on the Stricklin being better at charity than coaching/recruiting...lol!! but the bottom line is, and I think the former players on here say it best too, it's about opportunity and determination, winning championships, getting to Omaha, building a relationship with your teammates and coaches, etc. Only a few get to experience it and when it is over it is over. Most of all, give the glory to God for the talent that he has blessed upon you.

Now, let's play ball!!

If you have a son who wants to play at the furthest level look no further than Kent, Ohio. Numbers don't lie. BUT, I think he'd have to take Birkbeck with him to attract top notch pitching that Birkbeck attracts each and every year. No one is better than Birkbeck in developing MLB talent.

With all the resources at Ohio State, how can they year in and year out be the 2nd best team in the State? Obviously they are a FOOTBALL school but that's unbelievable. They should just ask Kent who they are after each year and go get them.
Are you kidding me? Since 1991, I challenge you to find a team in the State of Ohio that has done better than the Buckeyes.

If MAC Champs again is not good enough, then what will you say about evreyone lese who is below Kent?

You mean co-champs with Bowling Green this year. Bowling Green lead the MAC in team batting average and Ryan Shay from BGSU lead all the MAC with a 429 batting average. EMU which was 2nd overall to Bowling Green and Kent won the MAC tourney championship. There was some parity this year in the MAC and I see more and more in the future. Kent is still a great program and will continue to be but they arn't alone in the MAC anymore!

Ben Klafczynski, Kent St. .339/.385/.630 with 11 HR

Dan Burkhart (moeller) also had a solid season as starting catcher at Ohio State. He started off slow at the plate but got it going about mid season and ended up batting .308. Another freshman and fellow Moeller guy Alex Wimmers got a pretty good amount of innings coming out of the bullpen for the Bucks. Had a 4.50 ERA and recorded 51 strikeouts in 40 innings. Look for him to be a starter next year.

Good to see Belza representing Moeller and Cincinnati as well.

32-5 run differential in a 3 game sweep by the Flashes over BGSU.

Co-champs or not, that happened, and EMU a great game to get to the NCAA with a sub .500 record, that happened also.

Until a MAC program wins 40 plus regular season games, no at-large bid will ever come under the current system, and even then, they would probably get snubbed.

White Lion

For EMU's "Sub .500" record they sure did play some teams that aren't even on Kent's schedule. There non-league schedule of New Mexico, Florida, FLA Atlantic, Tennessee, Kentucky, OH State, Mich State & Mich. sure paid dividends when they got to the MAC schedule. EMU was tied with Kent & BGSU in losses and played 1 less game because of rainouts. EMU was also beating Kent 3-0 when their game was snowed out! Go Eagles! They deserve to be exactly where they are!!

147 Ball State 0.494 28 25

263 Buffalo 0.424 14 38

Until all these teams start winning OOC, then MAC representation in the NCAA tournament to Omaha
will remain as it is.

Chris Carpenter would have given Arizona fits. Many would have loved to see that matchup. With Putnam probably used in UM game # 1 against UK, then Kyle Smith in game # 2 against either UM or UK would have been a good one. We'll never know as the system doesn't permit it.

Good Luck to EMU, hope your pitchers are ready.

Congrats to EMU on winning the tournament to represent the MAC. You were just too much for the Flashes!

Tribe Time, you have got to kidding me. You are a piece of work for taking a comment I made totally out of context. I was referring to the last game where the score was 12-4. I congratulated EMU on their win. I failed to congratulate all of the teams for getting the opportunity to the MAC Tourny. I would have said the same thing had Kent State won 12-4 over EMU. And I support all players anywhere.

So this is for you, since your feelings got hurt by me, Congrats to all of the teams in the MAC, had to opportunity to see some great talent over the season at all colleges. Looking forward to next season, summer ball to watching more talented players. That is what you do when you love the game and respect the players that work so hard and have worked all of their young lives to get to showcase their talents and help their teams win tournaments, and hopefully go deep into the NCAA tourny. That is the main goal of any player and their families.

I am for any young man that gets the opportunity to play at any level of baseball. No matter where that is, it is hard to get to play after HS. Period. I support all MAC teams as they represent the conference that my son chose to play in and plays in. The better the MAC is represented helps all teams in the MAC. That is the big picture.

Tribe Time, I do not live in the past or carry any grudges, nor did my post refer to that, my family has the same goals and expectations as any other college family in the US. I have met great families at all colleges over the past few years. I respect the game and respect great players. I do not respect someone that tries to make my comments something that they are not.

Many highly touted freshman and sophomores are placed in the cape by the coaching staff through their contacts on the various teams there. Deitrich is no different. He had a solid year in 2008, and barring any serious injuries will be playing in the Cape. They do offer temp. contracts for players, as sort of a performance based contract until the full roster arrives.

It applies to the cost of attendance to you. So if you are an out of state student it is that % of the out of state tuition. If that % takes up the entire tuition it then applies to the cost of housing, etc.
