Springfield South
PG - John Carson, South’s all time leading scorer with 1472 points. Without a doubt the best player ever at South. UC/Akron.
SG - Ajamu Gaines, Carson’s teammate and South’s #2 all time scorer with 1180 points. DII POY in 1999 at Charleston (WV), Europe/IBL.
PF - Jayson Gee, leader of the 1984 unbeaten South team. DII COY (Charleston), currently assistant coach at Cleveland St.
SF - Nate Miller, #3 all time in scoring at South with 1090 points. UNC Wilmington - now at Bowling Green.
C - Elgrace Wilborn, not a prolific scorer by any means, but maybe the most dominating defensive player ever at South. Now playing with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Couldn’t make up my mind on 6th man, so I listed the entire bench:
Jody Finney (64-66, was the all-time leading scorer until Carson and Gaines came along)
Tony Hubbard (early 70’s, was the most dominating player on the only Wayne Weisman team to win a district title. Tony was the man when I started following South basketball)
Vince Phelps (mid-late 70’s, one of the best PG’s ever at South)
Pepper Bego (South's single season scoring leader with 520 points in 1982)
Rob Jackson, key player on the 83-84 and 84-85 teams that were 39-1 over two seasons.
Thomas Stephens (late 90’s – maybe the best all-around athlete ever at South)
Isiah Carson (John’s younger brother, who scored 913 points in three years at South Scored over a 1000 in his high school career counting he one year at Springfield Catholic).

i also might consider adding stevie valentino to the list as a 6th man just for the way he managed all of those games.my favorite steve v moment is probably a rarely remembered play. in his junior year (04) he hit a fadeaway buzzer beater that he banked in for 3 frm the corner against collinwood to put
the game into overtime and ultimately keep solons undefeated season going at that point

Stevie was a great player, and I certainly remember that last-second 3-pointer vs. Collinwood to save the undefeated season. But Valentino was essentially a role player, and never was a big scorer.
Each of the players I named was the centerpiece of his team, the guy the other players rallied around. Most of today's Solonites have never heard of Gordie Riddles, but he's the player who put Solon basketball on the map. He led the Comets to a couple of 20-plus win seasons in the mid-'60s; the Comets had never been successful in hoops prior to that time. Back then, Solon was less than a quarter-size of what it is today. It was little more than a farm school, and most of those "in the know" around Cuyahoga County barely knew Solon existed.
But in the sectionals/districts, Solon shocked a couple of Senate teams, including John Adams, which was one of the biggest powers in Ohio in the '60s. Back then, the Senate was possibly the state's strongest conference, and Solon's feat was something right out of "Hoosiers." Gordie Riddles was the best player on those Comet teams. He was a super-quick little guard, around 5-7 or 5-8. He could handle the ball, drive the lane and hit the outside shot with equal efficiency. He was also a disruptive defender. His size kept him from going to a major college.
Solon had a run of great teams in the '60s. After Riddles graduated, the Mark Minor era began. Those Comet teams were led by Harold Andreas, who coached Bobby Knight in high school at Orrville. The Riddles-Minor years marked Solon's best-ever period of basketball until the last two years, with Dallas Lauderdale.

Whatever happened to Steve Logan? Where is he? What is he doing?
He was drafted by the Golden St. Warriors in the early second round (#30 ?) and could never come to a contract agreement. I beleive he backed-up Gilbert Arenas before playing ball in NBA Europe.
He went on to become the 2nd all time scorer at UC behind Oscar Roberton.

6th man - David Scarpitti (2004), in a really close one over Dinger.
Where are these guys now? Wilson would shoot as soon as he crossed 1/2 court!!! And he made most of them! Just think how many points he would have had if there had been a three point line in the early 70's.

David Scarpitti is currently a student at Mount Union.
Dave Scarpitti is employed at Parker-Hunter in Slaem.
Donnie Campbell works for Kent State, I think.
Ryan Snyder is a grad student in NYC, after playing at Wooster.
Joe Braidic is the head basketball coach at Pandora-Gilboa.
Troy Donaldson lives somewhere in SE Ohio.
Greg Wilson is employed in Wadsworth.
All, except for young David and Donaldson, are memebers of the Sebring Athletic HOF.
We'll never see another player at Sebring with Wilson's combination of skills.
With the 3-point line and a four-year career, I'm betting on over 2,500 career points.

How about Gino Bartlelone at the shooting guard with Logan and moving Lepore to small forward with Jawad Williams and place Delvon Roe as the 6th man?

Roe is approximately 13.4 times better than Jawad Williams was in High School. To put it kindly, Williams was a pu$$. He'd float around the perimiter and jack up 3's at a very mediocre percentage. Didn't rebound, didn't play defense, didn't hustle. I was generous putting him as my 6th man.

No Phil Hubbard...you know you're has been blessed with great talent and tradition when you can leave an Olympic Gold Medalist/10 year NBA player/Current NBA Asst. Coach, and still have a lineup that looks that pretty!
You're right!!! I didn't forget him, just let him out of MY line-up. I challenge anyone to try and pick from our rich history. It turned out to be difficult, but I want to hear other opinions too!! Where are the PUPS at?

I thought Melvin Levitt was VASJ for 3 years and was to transfer to Oak Hill Academy for his senior year and it didn't work out so he went back to his home school. I believe Ricardo Crumble(John Hay?) was on Oak Hill that year Levitt was supposed to play(94-95).
No Phil Hubbard...you know you're has been blessed with great talent and tradition when you can leave an Olympic Gold Medalist/10 year NBA player/Current NBA Asst. Coach, and still have a lineup that looks that pretty!Whenever the threads come up regarding best players in Ohio history, I include Hubbard. Many people forget just how good he was before the knee surgery(ies?). Even after the knee problems (which weren't as easy to fix back then) he went on to have a solid NBA career. Granted, McKinley probably has the most impressive list of former players in Ohio, but I would rate Hubbard as the best player ever at McKinley.

Jawad was indeed a guy who would often only play to the level of his competition, but there is no denying the raw athleticism he possesed on the court. In terms of the raw athleticism, he may have been the best of the metioned players. Its a shame he didnt display it more in his days at St. Edward. But I dont think your being too generous putting a guy as your sixth man who was a major contributor and starter on a North Carolina NCAA championship team.

6 Donnie Dobbs 6-3 St. Louis University. Toledo City League single game scoring record.impressive
..and rumored to be one of the reasons the school was closed, jealousy by some of the local privates with political influence.... :(
Most state fans know the Canton McKinley, Middletons, Akron Centrals and Columbus Easts and some know what Lima Senior could put up
Mostly I post Macomber because not many are aware of the ball we play up here, not because it's even the best in Toledo or even the best Macomber team; just the most recognizable. Toledo Scott could post it's own Globetrotters' team, from the days they most likely were the best in the game, and Toledo Libbey and St. John's could post competitive teams.
But, if I were to post what I think is THE best all-time team in the state, it wouldn't come from any of those. It would be
Robinson Jr. High.
Many of the best players on Macomber, Libbey, Scott and most recently, St. John's, came from Robinson. I'm working on getting it together but I can about guarantee it would be ten deep in high-school or college all-americans and pros.
Springfield North:
F Randy Ayers 6'6" Miami, OH.
F Frank Ayers 6'7" Cleveland State/Western Michigan
C Craig Taylor 6'9" Ohio State
G Fred Carson 6'2" Texas
G Elliott Fullen 6'1" Northwestern
Bench:
C Marcus Banta 6'10" Penn State
G Greg Murphy 6'1" Wittenberg (baseball)
F Todd Jones 6'5" Miami, OH>
G Rick Stinnett 6'0"
G Devon Lewis 6'3" Youngstown State
F Eric Thomas 6'4" Kent State
F Owen Bronston 6'5" Murray State
Nice list. College wise this group did much better than South's best. Imagine had the original Springfield High never split. Several of these kids actually lived in the South district but through open enrollement went to North.
Fred Carson is the father to South stars John and Isiah.
Randy Ayers, who we all know was the head coach at OSU, is now an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic. His son Ryan is currently a sophomore playing at Notre Dame.

Toledo basketball has been very good over the years. When Ben Williams was coaching Scott, they were great.....Melvin Newbern / Val Glinka was at St. Francis, they had good basketball / Libbey has had some very good teams / Bowsher had the kid who went to OSU / DeVillbiss / St. John's......and so on and so forth. Some of the best regional games I ever saw was between Scott and Lorain Admiral King. The 74 Regional Championship Scott won 55-52. The 82 Regional Champioship Scott won 50-49, and the 86 Regional semi that Admiral King won 53-51. Three games decided by a difference of 2 points.

There guys all led their team to the State as seniors and that is or should be the standard for McK.
Guys like Snow ,Hawkins,Taylor,Stokes ,Greer, didn't quite show up.
Just my opinion!!!!!!!!!!
As I stated above this my "high school team", what happened to these guys after is not relevant to me.

sg- Chad Kamstra(1996)- #76 on Cincinnati Enquirer top 100 went on to play at Toledo and is elder's all time leading scorer
sf-Dave Naber(1991)- cincinnati post and enquirer player of the year
pf- Tom Biedenharn(1962)- averaged 25 points his senior year. Most ever for an Elder player
C- Dan Federmann(1980)- #45 on Cincinnati Enquirer top 100 went on to play at Tennessee
6th Man: Thomas Sander(2004)- plays at Davidson
7th Man: Kyle Rudolph(2008)- will probably end up 2nd in scoing all time at elder
You Elder guys kill me in that you don't know your own history. Rick Apke was the best player on BOTH the 73 and 74 state champ teams. But because he didn't go to UC or Miami no one knows him anymore........
No... he went to Creighton, and played for his older brother. And in 1978 he led them to the Missouri Valley Championship by beating Indiana State. He hit a buzzershot over some guy named Bird to win it. 2 weeks before, he had held Bird to like 12 points in a game at ISU. Take a look at the CU hall of fame...... he's there. Look at the Creighton all time scoring leaders........ he's between Paul Silas and Kyle Korver. And then look at the 78 draft.......... he was a 3rd round pick of the Bullets ....... taken right before Pat Cummings and Michael Cooper.
OK..... off the soapbox now.

Beat me to the punch about Apke.
Sorry @ that. I saw the guy play......... I think he was the best Player of the Decade of the 70's in Cincy until LaSalle Thompson came along. For Sure he was the GCL player of the 70's.
But don't tell Groeschen or the other Enquirer guys that..... They'll name 10 other guys who couldn't carry Apke's jock, like Dan Doellman, Archie Aldridge or Greg Johnson........... E-GAD. Funny thing about Doellman..... he graduated a year after Apke, yet was only good enough to play D2. Archie Aldridge got schooled by the guy in the 74 district..... and then Apke was drafted in the same NBA draft 3 rounds before Aldridge.
So either Apke really improved in college......... OR the Enquirer guys are Full of "stool"

Raymar Morgan quite possibly has the athletic ability and skills to be better than any McKinley alum at the next level. Any Alliance alum posters pick anyone yet? Wait i'm sorry we have only had a handful of D-1 recruits and none played in the NBA or for a major college program...........
I'll post mine:

actually his starting lineup is a bit off. Instead of Dierkers, Pat Watt was in to play the point. Now if you are talking Moeller you pretty much have to include Brack, because he is prolly an NBA player but just so happens to basically be a top 3 pick in the baseball draft. Anyway for Moe I would have:
Monserez
Duncan
Brannen
Larkin
Mike Sylvester
Brack
Matt Sylvester

I don't think he would have made the NBA, I don't think he even averaged 7 ppg at NC State, and I never remember hearing anything about him. As for baseball I have no idea, I know thats all he is playing now, but I don't really follow baseball anymore.

ehh, i like the starting roster given by MoeGrad...
Bubba is a point guard at Ohio. So he would run the point. Duncan is essentially a shooting guard because he roams the perimeter rather than playing on the inside. Brackman would run the three because of his skills and athletic ability. Dierkers would run the four and childress would play center.
That team would start 6'4, 6'9, 6'11, 6'8, and 6'9. Everyone on the floor could shoot the three as well, except maybe dierkers. He wasnt much of a shooter, but more of a slasher/rebounder. That would be a sweet lineup, all from the 2004 team. I dont think people realize the talent on that team. I also realize that they simply didnt get the job done in order to get to the final 4, but on paper, they were the best team in the state that year. Just like St. Eds was this year, but missed out on the title.
If you talk history with Moe, there are plenty of players that could be considered. Monserez, Larkin, Brannen (three time gcl player of the year), Sylvester (Matt and his dad Mike). But I like the height and skill of the more recent players. So i'd take that team over anyone. But of course, since I went to Moeller, I'm very biased. I think we all are if we were honest with ourselves. Its a bunch of dream teams, who knows how they would actually compete on the floor? It is fun to discuss though!
ps...who ever said bubba was a BAD shooting guard? You are crazy and obviously never saw him shoot. His percentage isnt a reflection of how good a shooter he was because he took a ton of threes and all were contested. He was good for 3 or 4 per game.....

The only times I've seen him shoot he doesn't hit... He shot something like 1 of 11 one time I watched him play, and when I have watched him he seems to put up a lot of shots, a lot of them aren't very smart.

How about Mike Leurck? One of the top rebounders in LaSalle history; played at UC.
Lorain Admiral King:
G - Jim "Bubbles" Harris, 1967...31.8 ppg Senior Season / Indiana University
G - Jamie Gladden, 1989..........23.3 ppg Senior Season / Xavier University
C - Pat Biber, 1967.................22.1 ppg Senior Season / Tampa University

1st Sub - Harold Walton, 1988.....18.8 ppg Senior Season / Kent State
2nd Sub - Tommy Harris, 1973.....24.4 ppg Senior Season / Bowling Green
Didn't Doug Grayson play at Lorain Admiral King (or was is Lorain Senior)? He is the Hall of Fame player from Kent State who still has the NCAA record for consecutive shots made in on game (16 vs. North Carolina in 1967).

I realize that I'm showing my age, but the following Wildcats have to be mentioned:
Richard "D---" Cunningham, Murray State and NBA (Milwaukee Bucks)
Howard Jolliff, Ohio University and NBA (Los Angeles Lakers)
Jim Warsler, Hiram and Goodyear Wingfoots (NIBL)
Terry Allerton, B-W and Goodyear Wingoots (NIBL)
Tom Logadich, Kent State
Stan Aukamp, Sr., Akron
I'm glad Ronnie Young was not forgotten. What a great high school player! Signed at Tennessee, but later decided on a MLB career as a pitcher. Hurt his arm and never realized his potential. The left-handed Young was really smooth. Lots of other college players from South (the Ash brothers, Larry Hackenberg, Denny Leach, Stan Aukamp, Jr., etc.).
What a great basketball tradition!

Middletown - kind of hard to choose, like some said up top, too many to choose from, but here goes:
C- Jerry Lucas (In the NBA Top 50 players ever)
F- Butch Carter (1976 Player of the Year, IU, and NBA for years)
F- John Fraley (Went big time D1 in the 60's - 2nd all time leading scorer)

G - Cris Carter (went on to NFL fame, but was unbelievable in bball)

Mark Current (4th leading all time scorer, VMI, took team to state in 83)
Ryan Fletcher (played for UC)
Benny Roberts (Stud back in the post Lucas era)
Jesse Jemison (70's star who played for San Fran and the Harlem Gtrotters)

Jerry Butcher has retired from teaching. The last place he taught was Cuyahoga Falls. He's really a good guy and was an outstanding high school player at Kent Roosevelt in the early 1960's.

I have to put Joe Gampfer on this team. Class of '80. Good enough to get a ride to Purdue......... He's still the only LS player to get a big ten scholarship. And I can name 5 or 6 guards I'd rather have than Schrand. He may get 25, but the guy he's responsible for gets a career high. Dan Cronin, Ben Ahearn, Kirk Nienaber, Jim Ruwe, Steve Ruberg, Tom Junker.......

David Hutchinson III
Ryan Lent
Ben Hackett
Josh Garrison
Linc Rottman
I agree for the most part. Agreed, you have seen many more Triway athletes on the court than I have. Here is what I would put together:
PG- BJ Sanderson
G- Linc Rottman
With those two at the point and controlling the ball and offense, there is no way any team in the state in any division could press them. Now, who needs an outside shooter when you have those two handling the ball and able to dish it to the following three?
F- Josh Garrison
F- Ryan Lent
C- David Hutchinson III
I think this team would out-rebound and out-assist every team by 15+ every game! Now for a 6th man, hmm. Do I go big with Larry Benning (but we already have tons of size), or do I go with a shooter/guard?
6th man- Jamie Breneman
Why not? We already have two dominant PG's and three dominant inside men. We just need a 3-point shooter now. Who better than Jamie Breneman, a 6'2" guard that is #5 all-time on Triway's scoring list, #4 on the assists list, #1 on steals list, scored 433+ in two separate seasons, and set a state final four record for 3-pointers. So we have the chemistry combinations of Sanderson/Garrison and Rottman/Breneman, then inside domination with Hutchinson and Lent. Wow!
Sorry for the long post.

There were plenty to choose from, Im sure my list is not perfect but what is.....
*Tyrice Walker....1st team all state, Ohio's Player of the Year, great college career at XU.
*Greg Stokes......1st team all state, Ohio's Player of the Year, All American at Iowa.
*Alex "Boo" Ellis...Led the Big Blue to a State Championship in the early 50's, All State, Great college career at Niagra where he led the nation in rebounding.
*Kevin Grevey.....2-time 1st team all state, Ohio Player of the Year, all time leading scorer in Hamilton, 2-time All American at Kentucky, 10 year career in the pros capped by world championship playing with Washington Bullets.
*Joe Nuxhall.......1st team all state, Ohio's Player of the Year, You know the rest of his career.
*6th Man........Never saw this man play, this pick is for my departed father...."Spud" Hornsby....All State in the late 50's. Complete player who never got the recognition he deserved due to the fact he played in the shadow of the great Jerry Lucas from nearby Middletown. Went on to play with another great Oscar Robertson at UC. Career cut short by broken leg.

ehh, i like the starting roster given by MoeGrad...
Moeller might have been the most talented team in 04 but they were not the best team. Brookhaven obviously had a better team, and Hamilton had the best team. In March of 04, I would have picked Hamilton to beat any team in the country.
Anybody from Hamilton want to take Brandon Lampley for the all-time team? I know he definitely was not as good as many of the Hamilton greats but he was the best clutch performer I have ever seen. Here's his resume:
Regional Semi-Final against Princeton in 03 - hits game tying 3 at the buzzer while falling out of bounds.
Regular Season Finale in 04 against Princeton - runner in the lane in the closing seconds to give the Big Blue the GMC title.
Section Final against Mason in 04 - nails a 3 from the top of the key at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Hits a runner in the closing seconds of overtime to give Hamilton the win.
2004 State Tournament Most Valuable Player
2004 State Champions
Middletown - kind of hard to choose, like some said up top, too many to choose from, but here goes:

There are so many former Middies who had great carreers. Of your starters, I'm sure thatAldridge was a forward and Fraley a guard. I remember when i was a kid going to watch Fraley put up 50 against Fairfield. I think the Middies set their scoring record that night with 119 points. Coach Walker used to peel an orange when the game was in hand. The fans used to go nuts. I remember one year against Hamilton Taft, when Kevin Greevy was there, Coach Walker peeled the orange too soon. Taft came back and nearly won. I think Coach Walker almost choked on the seeds that night!

Totally forgot about Maverick - DIII POY in LeBron's freshman year..
Another possible center would be Steve Stanford from '74. He was a 7-footer who went on to play for a school in FLA. I saw a game at StV vs Manchester and Mike Phillips. What a game. Averaged over 90 points per game without a 3 point line. Most of their shots came WAY BEYOND where the 3 pt line exists today. The starters rarely saw 4th quarter action in the regular season and some tourney games.

6th: Jawad Williams, UNC
Lee Walchuk? from around 1970 or so? Was he from Gilmour and led the area in scoring in his junior year, and then transferred, with much controversy, to Eds for his senior year.
As I recall, he wanted to be an actor. So he went to UCLA and successfully walked on to the greatest dynasty in collegiate history. I think he was always the last guy off the bench and saw next to no action. I wonder how the acting thing went.

What about Mike Singleton and I can't remember his first name but there was a Perkins that played around the same time. I believe they went to state in 91?
Singleton would have DESTROYED Prestier.

PG Jeff Roberts
SG Dan Davidson
PF Tom Thompson
SF Nate Schindewolf
C Mike Phillips
6th Man Bobby Eckert
I would add Tucker Pappas to that group.

G. Clark Kellogg 6-8
G. David Lighty 6-5
F. Help me out with the bench, Grbac, Howard??? Viking Alumni finish it off
StarstoShine...that's a pretty poor effort.
Start with Eric Kellogg...very talented athlete, troubled kid, never accomplished anything in basketball (high school or college). He doesn't belong on this list. He's Clark's brother...that's all he's known for. John Beauford also doesn't belong on this list...a good high school career but he was playing with 7 foot Riley and 6'8" Treg Lee. Beauford accomplished little in college.
Try this
Center Eric Riley
Forward Clark Kellogg
Forward Pat Lyons
Guard Stan Kimbrough
Guard Kevin Edwards
Subs...David Lighty, Tony Miller, Treg Lee

Totally forgot about Maverick - DIII POY in LeBron's freshman year..
Another possible center would be Steve Stanford from '74. He was a 7-footer who went on to play for a school in FLA. I saw a game at StV vs Manchester and Mike Phillips. What a game. The stands were full of scouts. Some outside of Manchester might forget that Manchester had more than just Phillips back then - Thompson and a PG who was pretty good - name escapes me....
I was at that game in '74. The place was packed and it got real loud. In fact, I still have an old photo packed away somewhere that shows Phillips and Stanford going up for a tip-off. If I can ever find it I'll try to post it for old times sake. The PG you're thinking of for Manchester was Jeff Roberts.
PG - Chris Spears
SG - Alex Welp
SF - Scott Grote
PF - Ben Rhoda

6th - Gary Davies, Kyle Couvion, John McEldowney, Logan Leen

C - Mike Webster '56 (26.7 ppg in 1955-56)
F - John Hatch '54 (1,200+ career points)
F - Rob Wininger '93 (1,800+ career points)
G - Brad Reusch '98 (1,600+ career points)
G - Marvin Farnsworth '53 or maybe Craig Divis ('96?)
In modern times, some candidates are Andrew Bene, Danny Koehler, and Ben Klafczynski
Bene anchored the team for a couple seasons while Koehler had skills in all facets of the game. Klafczynski was an offensive weapon and used way above average athleticism as part of his game.
These 3 from recent history did not play 4 years of Varsity but still left some solid numbers in the Highland record books.

I also would have Joey Rey in there. I believe he was the only Ignatius player to start as a freshman, and I mean the very first game of his freshman season. Also, he was the only Ignatius player ever to appear in Street & Smith's highest section of highschool seniors. Also agree about the headcase part. He got a scholarship to Xavier and I heard he went nuts because he wasn't starting and transferred to Cleveland State.
Also interesting that Dowling makes both the football and basketball lists currently going on Yappi. I could bore you with many hours of stories about Brian on the basketball court, playing every position and dominating. Also his younger brother Chris ended up getting a basketball scholarship to Brigham Young, maybe the only Ignatius graduate who's ever gone there.

Talent for the top 5? I guess you're right. Since the two words that come to mind when I think of him are underachiever and disappointing (moreso in college than high school, but high school as well), I didn't put him on my list.

Who is Mike Phillips, well let me tell you youngster. Mike Phillips I believe still holds the OHSAA record for most points in championship game and most points in the state tournament. (1974) He scored 2593 points in his career (1970-1974), at Akron Manchester. He went on to Kentucky where he was part of the twin towers.

I knew I should have looked this up before posting. Phillips only held the two game record and not the single game record. Lebron James tied the record in 2002 and Jon Diebler broke it last March.
slow down, there are 2 Mike Phillips'
one was all world from akron manchester that was 7' tall
the other was all ohio from united local and 6'2".
both graduated around the same time, late 70's. the taller phillips went on to star at kentucky with rick roby.

Good list....although I'm not too sure who Tyrice Walker is. When did he play for the Blue? I'd maybe add Larry Allen in the mix as well as Brandon Lampley for bench players....
Surprised no one has given one for STA, so I'll try.
