The Bombers open the season this Friday at 7pm at Lakota West's Firebird Stadium.
X lost to LW 12-2 in the 3rd round last season after defeating them soundly in the season opener.
Lakota West finished 11-2 losing to Moeller 21-17 the following Friday in the regional final.

X is 4-1 all time vs Lakota West
2006 X won 44-3 1st Round at Ballaban Field
2018 X won 34-0 Week 1 at Paul Brown Stadium
2020 X won 10-7 4th Round at Firebird Stadium
2021 X won 31-14 Week 1 at Ballaban Field
2021 X lost 12-2 3rd Round at Princeton HS

The 2 coaches (Specht and Bolden) have squared off 23 times since 2007 and Specht holds a 12-11 advantage.

The visiting Bombers are underdogs as preseason Ohio D1 polls have Lakota West in the top 5 and StX anywhere between 8 and 12.

Offensively Lakota West is led by 3 year varsity starter #7 senior QB Mitch Bolden (6’1” 195lb)
His stats from 2 games vs X last season is underwhelming: 81 rushes for 162 yards; 12 for 33 for 126 yards 2 TDs and 2 INTs

This year’s running back is #26 junior Jiovionni Wilson 5’9” 150lb

Last year’s leading receiver returns: 3 year varsity starter and Army recruit #4 Trent Lloyd (51 catches for 612 yards and 8 TDs)

The OLine is led by senior center #75 Alex Key (6’3” 270lb) and senior left tackle #72 Tony Curtis (6’1” 250lb)

The strength of this Firebird team is it’s defense led by 3 D1 commits.
Look for Hartford and Ben Minich to play receivers on offense on passing downs.

Small quibble - last season ended against the Firebirds in Princeton Stadium.

Anyone attempted to get tix - either from X or Lakota West?

Freshmen set the tone and took care of business, 26 - 12 or 14 I believe. Next up Varsity followed by JV. Hope we get the sweep!

Yep freshman team looked pretty decent, they have some weapons on offense. Defense also played well. QB can sling it a little bit from what I saw so the future looks bright

Any of these frosh going to be ready for varsity before the end of the year?
#6 QB Dan Vollmer 6'1" 176lb
#9 WR Cameron Taylor 6'1" 173lb
#10 WR Kobe Klapper 6'1" 178lb
#11 WR Brayden Reilly 6'2" 158lb
#18 WR/S Aden Reeder 6'1" 171lb

The only freshman I recall playing varsity in the last 25 years was WR Kevin Milligan in 2009

Man, there is some size at WR at JV and Frosh levels
Coverdale shelved the playbook from the past 3 years that produced record setting passing and receiving performances but knows he's going to pull it back out as soon as this season is over.

There is an overwhelming amount of talent at the QB and WR positions for the next 3 years.

But this year with the talent at TE and the size of the OLine coupled with the limited WR experience it will likely be a methodical rather than explosive offense.

Last Friday was 65/35 in favor of the run, but as has been said may have been as much due to the LW secondary strength as much as X wanting to pound the ball.

Going into the LW game I thought the same, buy not as sure. They had guys open quite a bit against the best secondary they're going to face. I think the potential to ground it out is there, but I think it may be more open than I originally anticipated.

I agree.

The team went to a hostile environment Friday against one of the top teams in R4 with only 4 returning starters (Hammond, Bonner, Fleetwood and Fogler), 2 of which are playing new positions, and led 13-0 at the half.

Offense
O'Malley is a dual threat who scrambles, escapes and throws well on the run.
A decent 1st varsity start: 11/19 for 206 yd....1 of every 3 passes uncatchable, no INTs, 2 sacks (-10yd) and 7 scrambles for 38 yds
Sharp showed big play capability, former QBs Fitzgerald and Weber have potential and Napier can catch the ball out of the backfield.
Wassler's return to the lineup will be big as he will be targeted 5 to 10 times per game.
The OLine is not small: 275-288-283-292-307
The 200lb Napier is capable of 25 carries and 100+ yards each game

Defense/Special Teams
The LBs made 65% of the tackles, and the safeties 30% (this was flipped in the scrimmages)
LBs: Rose 13 (+1 TFL) - Devine 10 (+1 INT) - Beck 9 (+sack and TFL)
Safeties: Myers 9 (+3 pass breakups) - Bonner 6 - Houston 2
The defense dropped 3 passes that would have given them 4 INTS for the game
The punt team struggled....a dismal 23.8 yard avg for the 6 punts and a breakdown and block that led to a score

A talented young inexperienced team with a lot of room for improvement and most is made between weeks 1 and 2
On to Chi-town
