Tonight, Lakota West lost to Moeller in the Region 4 championship game just one week after beating Elder. Most years beating Elder in the playoffs almost guarantees a regional championship.

1988: Elder lost to state runner up Princeton in the Region 4 championship
1989: Elder lost to state runner up Moeller in the first round
1991: Elder lost to state runner up Centerville in first round
1995: Elder lost to Colerain who would have played for state championship if not for ineligible player
1996: Elder lost to state champion Lima Senior in state semifinals
1999: Elder lost to state runner up Wayne in Region 4 championship

2000: Elder lost to Colerain in Region 4 championship
2001: Elder lost to state runner up St. Xavier in Region 4 championship
2004: Elder lost to state champion Colerain in first round
2007: Elder lost to state champion St. Xavier in first round
2008: Elder lost in state championship game to Cleveland St. Ignatius
2009: Elder lost to state champion Hilliard Davidson in state semifinals

2012: Elder lost to Colerain in second round
2013: Elder lost to state champion Moeller in second round
2014: Elder lost to state runner up Wayne in first round

2015: Elder lost to Colerain in Region 4 championship
2016: Elder lost to Mason in the first round
2018: Elder lost to state runner up Colerain in the Region 4 championship
2019: Elder lost in state championship game to Pickerington Central
2020: Elder lost to state champion St. Xavier

2021: Elder lost in second round to St. Xavier
2022: Elder lost in third round to Lakota West

In 16 of 22 years, the team who beat Elder in the playoffs at least played for the state championship. Two other times, the team who beat Elder made it to the state final four.

I just wanted somewhere with a list of who won Region 4.

Only Colerain, Elder, Moeller, X, and Wayne have won the region since 1995.

* Colerain forfeited
** Hillard Davidson was not a "Region 4" team in the years of 2 regions
*** Moeller and Colerain would have won a Regional Championship under the 4 Region format in the years or the 2 regions.

I updated my original post to include state runners up Princeton in 1988, Moeller in 1989, Centerville in 1991, Colerain in 1995 who would have played for the state championship and 1996 where Elder lost in the state semifinals to champion Lima Senior.

Again, who cares? Losing to teams that win titles isn’t a badge of honor. Is that all you guys think Elder should be? A team that hangs it hat on losing close games to good teams.

Anyone else tired of hearing about the LW defense.
“Moeller was the first team to score over 20 on them”
We should have had 28.

They looked good last night. Moe had a defensive TD that skewed that. They also moved the ball, but couldn’t finish drives.

Moeller better win it this year, or they will be very hard pressed to sniff the state title game in awhile. 3 years of Jordan Marshall with good talent surrounding him and no trophy to show for it would be a huge failure. A Jordan Marshall comes around to a program once a decade if you're lucky and maybe once a generation for most programs.

This is the 3rd year in a row Moeller will face Springfield in the state Final 4. Moeller should finally get over the hump and get a rematch vs. Ed's. I would not sleep on Hilliard Bradley if I were St. Ed's though.

I wish Elder was facing that same kind of pressure. They have virtually no chance of competing in R4 for years. I have no love for Moeller, I hope they lose, the GCL brotherhood crap is lame, but Elder needs to step up.

Technically, Elder won Region 4 due to the forfeit. Unfortunately, the Semi-Final game was played before the ineligible player was found.
Elder and Colerain met in the first round in 1995 when four teams qualified for the playoffs. (Colerain was #1 in region 4 followed by Dayton Dunbar, Elder at #3 and Lakota (they hadn't split yet). I guess at that point it the seeding wasn't used to determine first round matchups. There's a quote in the Sunday, November 5 1995 edition of the Enquirer where Kerry Coombs said "There's a pretty good chance we'll play Elder or Fairmont. I doubt we'd have to play Lakota back to back. That's what we've been told.") Lakota beat Dunbar in their opening round game and faced Colerain in week 12 for the region 4 championship.

"Pete Rose had 4256 career hits"

Omar:
"Nothing to hang your hat on, he only won three World Series rings and none since 1980"
Does Elder have the all time highest number of state titles? Wins? No, that’s an awful analogy. A better analogy would be more like “Pete Rose struck 50 times by Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan in his career.” Again, the players have no reason to feel shame about losing, but as a program and fanbase losing to good teams isn’t an achievement.

Not so fast. Moeller returns 13-14 starters in 2024, including most of their O and D line, WR's, DB's, along with 3 really good sophs (who will be Jr's) at QB, LB and NT. Ponatoski will be a hell of a QB the next 2 seasons. I'd like to know who returns more than Moeller does in 2024?

So back in 1995 or any year that had less than 8 teams. The rule was you couldn't play teams back to back. So since they went 1 Colerain, 2 Dunbar, 3 Elder, and 4 Lakota, and Colerain and Lakota had played in week 10 (Colerain was not in the GMC at the time) Colerain and Lakota could not play in week 11. So they went 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4. So Elder played Colerain in round 1.

I was just getting ready to post why Elder finished #3 in the Harbins, but had to play the #1 first round. Thank you. I thought Elder lost to Colerain in the R4 finals, but you are right it was round 1.

Lakota is technically the winner of R4 in 1995.

Moeller will definitely be good, but this is their year with Marshall. I think St. X wins R4 next year.

I wonder if Elder-Oak Hills was the only week 10/week 11 rematch once the playoffs expanded to 8 teams per region in 1999 or if there were others.
I know it was allowed in 1999 when we went to 8 teams in the playoffs. It probably has happened more now with 16 teams. I thought I remember a GMC vs GMC week 10/11, but I can't remember who now.

I know it happened a couple times in the Iggy-Eds series. That's why they play in middle of the season instead of week 10 like they always have...

Only Colerain, Elder, Moeller, X, and Wayne have won the region since 1992.

Only 8 schools have won the region Colerain, Elder, Moeller, X, Wayne, Princeton, Centerville, and Fairfield.

OHSAA has had playoffs for 51 years. When you take into account the years of two Regions and making it to the final 4 you would have 53 Region 4 Champ teams.

Moeller 18
Colerain 8
X 8
Elder 6
Princeton 6
Wayne 4
Centerville 2
Fairfield 1

So all but three have been won by Moeller, Colerain, X, Elder, Princeton, and Wayne.
