RIO GRANDE — The last time that the University of Rio Grande took to the football gridiron, Harry Truman was the President of the United States — and the winners of Major League Baseball’s Most Valuable Player awards were Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams.

The times they are a changin’, though.

Plans to revive the school’s long-dormant football program, as well as the creation of a marching band program to go along with it, were announced by school officials during a Tuesday morning press conference.

Why would a rural struggling small college in the hills of Gallia County want to do this? Bob Evans is dead and gone. Where is the money coming from?

Enrollment. Looks like it's about $33,000 or so to go there annually. Which really isn't bad by today's standards. It costs about $800 to equip a football player. They are NAIA so I don't think there are any roster limits. So if you can get 100-120 paying customers at $33,000 per year, it makes alot of sense to have football, especially in Ohio, a big football state.
