Zanesville defeats Washington D.C. Roosevelt 36-6

On a perfect October night, Zanesville High School hosted a school from Maryland on their annual octoberfest football game. Washington D.C. Roosevelt, a small inner city school with a roster of 22, was the guest this year. Roosevelt has had games against teams from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and their home state Maryland.

The game would be won by the home team and this is how it went.

The Blue Devils would march down field running the ball all night long while completing 3 of 4 passes. The 1st score would come with 8:05 left in the opening quarter when junior Brandon Wallace would dive over the top from a yard out. After a 2 point run by Wallace, the home team was up 8-0.

The Zanesville defense would be tough all night long holding Roosevelt to 98 yards of offense for the entire game.

The Blue Devils would score their 2nd touchdown in the 1st quarter when senior multi-talented John Scott would scamper in from 1 yard out. The first of 4 extra points by strong footed senior kicker, Kevin Friel, would give the home team a 15-0 lead and that's the way the 1st quarter would end.

In the 2nd quarter, the Blue Devils would score 2 more touchdowns. The 1st would be a 2 yard run by Scott and with the extra point the score was 22-0 home team with 6:28 left in the half.

The final score of the half would be another short run covering 1 yard by Wallace and the extra point again was good by Friel making the score 29-0.

The 3rd quarter was a defensive struggle as both offenses seem to take quarter off.

The 4th would have 2 scores one by each team. The home Blue Devils would get another short touchdown run of 1 yard by Wallace, his 3rd of the game. After the final extra point by Friel, Zanesville was up 36-0.

With a little over 2 minutes remaining in the game and Zanesville again ready to score, the Roosevelt defense showing no quit, came up with their biggest play of the game when senior speedster Kevin Scott recovered a fumble and took it 92 yards to the house. A two point play failed making the score 36-6 with 1:59 left.
