WELLSVILLE DEFEATS NEWARK CATHOLIC
The night started off with terrible news for the Greenwave as one of the players family was involved in a horrific car accident just before the opening kickoff .The Players from Newark Catholic showed as much heart and grit as any young teenager should ever have to as they tried to overcome the cards they were dealt.
The night did not get any better once the game began as Newark Catholic quarterback Kevin Dolan continued to have passing problems as he once again would overthrow an open receiver and Matt Engle would get a easy pick for the Wellsville Tigers.
The tigers would get on the score board with 5.41 left on the clock left when the most under-rated runningback in the state Matt Brewer(5-9-195 sr) would bully his way in the endzone making the score 6-0 with 5.41 left in the opening quarter as the 2 point try failed. Wellsville would twice go for in on 4th down, and have no problem converting it.
Newark Catholic would be quick to answer the Tigers score as Seth Elliott would power his way in from 10 yards out after George Biddle hit the extra point the Greenwave had a 7-6 lead that they would take in to the half.
The 3rd quarter Newark Catholic kicked off to the speedy Gregg Collins and he would take it about 77 yards to the house and just like that the tigers had a lead. The 2 point try again would fail and with 11.47 left in the 3rd the scoreboard read 12-7,Tigers.
Kyle Williams who would have a 100 rushing, over 90 yards receiving ,and well over 100 yards on kickoff returns would get the Greenwave started with one of his many kickoff returns giving Newark Catholic good field position .On the next play Dolan would connect with Williams on a short pass that he would take 65 yards untouched to the house, but a 2 point try failed and the score was 13-12,Newark Catholic.
The fire works was not done in the 3rd as Wellsville offense would go thourgh the Newark Catholic defense like a knife thourgh hot butter ,and with 7.39 left JR. fullback Dustin Carr(6-0-215)would plow his way in from 3 yards out giving the tigers a 18-13 as another 2 point try failed.
Williams would take the kickoff and sprint all the way to the Tiger 40 yard line giving the Greenwave great field condition, but the offense could not get anything going and the Tigers would get the ball right back.
The Tigers would get their 3rd touchdown late in the 3rd as once again they made the Newark Catholic defense look like a old piece of Swiss cheese. Quarterback Mark LaScolo(soph 6-1-170)would roll right and lower a should hitting paydirt from 4yards out giving the Tiger a 24-13 lead heading to the 4th, as another 2 point try failed.
The Tigers would again be moving the ball, but this time the Greenwave would force a fumble by LaScolo giving them a little life when all seemed lost.
Newark Catholic relying on Williamson to do it on the ground as they had no passing game was moving the ball. Williamson would break left and try to make something out of nothing, but a Tiger was able to strip the ball away and again the hope of Newark Catholic looked to be gone.
The Defense would again stand tall getting the ball back to the offense as they held off the powerful tigers forcing a punt.
Newark Catholic would get a touchdown when Jr wideout Jimmy Hobson(5-10-155) would make a nice catch on a Dolan pass bring the score to 24-19 as yet another 2 point try would fail.
Newark Catholic would try a onside kick that the tigers would handle and with 2:20 left in the game all seemed lost for the Greenwave who had tried to overcome more then a football game on this night. The tigers would not do anything on offense giving the Greenwave a glimmer of hope, but as had been the case all night Dolan could not find a answer to passing and on 4th down the tigers would bat away all hopes for a Newark Catholic miracle comeback .
