Utica defeats Fredericktown 21-17

FREDERICKTOWN -- Utica's Dustin Walker ran for a school-record 274 yards and helped set up the Redskins' go-ahead touchdown that ultimately defeated host and Mid-Buckeye Conference rival Fredericktown 21-17 in the final game of the season for both schools.

Utica (5-5, 4-2) took possession of the ball just as the third quarter drew to a close, then opened the fourth quarter by driving 58 yards and chewing up 5:49 of the final period. Walker ran for a total of 59 yards during the drive, and Redskin quarterback Heath Yoakam completed a 14-yard pass to Jon Imler for the game-winning touchdown.

Fredericktown (4-6, 2-4) had two chances after that. The Freddies fumbled the ball away deep in their own territory on the first possession, but got the ball right back as Utica fumbled the ball back to Fredericktown on the very next play.

The Freddies then drove the ball into Utica territory, helped by two fourth-down conversions, one a completion from quarterback Chris Sipes to receiver Rob Bartram for 26 yards to the Utica 38 on fourth-and 26.

Two plays later, though, the Redskins secured the game when Ben Wygle stepped in front of a Sipes pass at the Redskin 32 and took it back to the Freddie 43.The Redskins then ran off the final 1:50 to win the battle for a .500 record.

Both teams had a tough time in adverse conditions. The game was played in chilly temperatures of 35 degrees while a wind of 25-30 mph took the temperature down even further.

But Utica was still able to play well in the cold weather. The Redskins scored first in the first quarter when Yoakam hit receiver Tyler Anderson from nine yards out to give Utica a 6-0 lead.

Fredericktown scored on the very next drive, a 12-play, 65-yard trek that ended with Sipes' one-yard run over the right side of the line. Karol Salva's PAT into the teeth of the wind gave the Freddies a 7-6 lead.

Salva added a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Freddies a 10-6 lead, but the Redskins took the lead back on the very next possession when Colt Riebesell scored from six yards out and Yoakam hit Imler for the two-point conversion, giving Utica the 14-10 lead.

The Freddies bounced back on their next possession, though. Fredericktown drove 64 yards in 2:15 and took the lead back on a 15-yard Sipes pass to Aaron Blubaugh. Salva's extra point gave the Freddies a 17-14 advantage, one they held until the fourth quarter.

Walker rushed 41 times for his Utica-record total while Anderson added 35 yards on six carries. Yoakam completed just 3-of-9 pass attempts in the game for 34 yards, but two went for touchdowns. Dan Fawcett had the other Redskin reception, an 11-yard catch.

Sipes led the Freddie rushers with 37 yards on 11 carries while Chad Farlee added 11 carries for 31 yards. Sipes completed 11-of-28 passes for a game-high 134 yards an one touchdown. Ryan Shoemaker had four receptions for 43 yards and Blubaugh three for 18 to lead the receivers.
