"It's never over until all 0's are left on the clock." This was game two on saturday. It featured state runner up Solon High School vs Walsh Jesuit High. This was as close to a must win game as you can have in week two for Solon. The 1st quater was all defense as both teams would trade punches like two heavy weigths in a championship fight. There would be no scoring until Dennis Basch (6'4" 205 te) would haul in a long pass from quaterback Andy Bruno (sr 5"10" 180). Steve Majerus would kick the extra point and with 8:47 left in the 1st half, Walsh had a 7-0 lead. That would be the only score in the half and both teams would go to the locker room feeling as if they could both win the game. The 3rd quater started like the 1st half had ended, with defense being the name of the game. Neither team could do anything on offense until Solon got the ball for the second time and they started a drive that would end with a TD catch by the very sure handed and talented Larry Lemons (6'1" 170 wr). After Tim Echan (6'0" 215) kicked the extra point, the game was all tied with 6:41 remaining in the 3rd. Walsh would strike back on it's next drive as qb Andy Bruno would run in from 9 yards out. After the extra point, Walsh was back in the lead 14-7 with 4:37 left. The touchdown was set up with a 75 yard kickoff return by Mr Everything, Mike Constaine (sr 5'10" 185). Solon's offense would keep the scoring venge going with a 31 yard field goal by kicker Tim Echan and with 28 seconds left in the 3rd, the score was 14-10. Solon's offense had trouble on the drive as junior tackle Eric Mendal (6'0" 250) would miss two blocks that would lead to qb Brad Hirsh (jr 5'10" 175) being sacked. In the 4th, both teams defenses would bend but not break and it apperead the score would end 14-10. Solon's offense would take over late in the 4th and on a wing and a prayer, qb Brad Hirsch let go a beautiful pass that would come down in the hands of junior wide receiver Tim Watson (5'11" 180). With the aid of a bone crunching block by Larry Lemmons, Watson scored. The extra point was good and with a 1:31 left in the game, the score would be 17-14 in favor of solon. For those of you who got to see this game, you witnessed one of the best blocks that I have ever seen. Larry Lemons is a complete wide receiver, he runs nice patterns, has good speed, soft hands, and he can block. newarkcatholicfan |
