BYESVILLE -- Nick Ongley's 60-yard fourth down reception on a tipped
ball set up the winning touchdown as the Shadyside Tigers rallied in the
final minutes for a 32-28 victory over the Danville Blue Devils to win
the Division VI Region 23 championship Saturday at Meadowbrook High
School in Byesville. Shadyside (12-1) moves on to face longtime Division VI power Mogadore in the Division VI state semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium in Canton. Danville, a state semifinalist two seasons ago, finishes 11-2. The Tigers took over with 1:18 left in the game at their own 12-yard line, and three consecutive Mike Kernik passes fell incomplete until Ongley hauled in the tip at around midfield and took the ball to the Danville 28. A third-down pass to Danny Dunsmore to the Blue Devil 10 kept the drive going, and Kernik hit Josh Pyles three plays later from 10 yards out with 15 seconds left for the go-ahead score. Danville had one last possession, but an illegal block penalty moved the ball back to their own 27. After an incomplete pass, Brandon Holmes picked off Devil quarterback Dave Colopy on the final play of the game. Danville started strong and took control early thanks to a potent run attack. The Devils rushed for 179 yards in the first half, led by Ryan Colopy, who bailed Danville out of a huge hole in the first quarter with a 95-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. But as good as the Danville run game was, Shadyside's passing game was better. The Tigers took advantage of the Blue Devil secondary all game long, not least of which on the final drive. Kernik threw for 202 yards in the first half and finished completing 26-of-40 passes for 379 yards and one touchdown. Kernik also added 41 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, including both Tiger touchdowns in the first half. Kernik at one point completed 15-of-16 passes between the second and fourth quarters, but his only mistake allowed Danville to break a 14-14 tie at the halftime gun. Ryan Colopy picked off Kernik on his final pass of the first half and returned it 45 yards to the Shadyside 30. Four plays later on fourth-and-3, Dave Colopy found Kyle Doup in the end zone for the tie-breaking touchdown as the clock ticked to zero. But Shadyside came right back in the second half, scoring touchdowns on their only two possessions of the third quarter. The Tigers used the run more than the pass in the first of the two drives as Dunsmore rushed for 14 yards to the Danville 28 during the drive and Steve Kernik took it in on the next play to close the Tigers within a point. Shadyside then balanced out the attack on their next drive, going 77 yards in 12 plays. Mike Kernik again capped the drive with a quarterback sneak from a yard out to give the Tigers a 26-21 lead. Danville took the lead back in the fourth quarter. Kyle Doup's 29 yard run on a reverse to the Tiger 21. Dustin Dawson scored from five yards out three plays later to give the Devils a 28-26 edge. The Devils had a chance to put the game away in the final period after Steve Kick blocked and recovered a Pyles punt at the Tiger 35, but despite running 10 plays, could only get as close as the Shadyside six-yard line. Dave Colopy was sacked at the Tiger 12 by Sean Grinch on fourth-and-goal to set up the Tigers' game-winning drive. Ryan Colopy led all rushers in the game with 151 yards and a score on 14 carries while Dawson carried 19 times for 83 yards and another touchdown. Dave Colopy completed just 4-of-11 passes for 64 yards and one touchdown but was picked off twice. Doup caught two passes for 30 yards and a score. Ongley topped all receivers with nine catches for 148 yards while Pyles finished with seven receptions for 118 yards and the winning touchdown. Steve Kernik rushed seven times for 45 yards to top the Tiger rushers.
