Dover defeats Orrville 14-10

DOVER TOPS ORRVILLE IN WILD FINISH

DOVER - After eight successive years of spectacular Dover/Orrville games that have seen the Tornadoes tally 154 points and the Red Riders 153, the ninth consecutive meeting lived up to the tradition.

With Dover grasping a narrow 7-3 advantage in the final few minutes of the forth quarter, the visiting Red Riders were given a gift in the form of a fumble at their own 37-yardline. After scampering to the 26-yardline, Orrville quarterback Marc Shupp nailed a wide open Kyle Geiser in the corner of the end zone to give Orrville a 10-7 lead with just 1:09 remaining.

That's when veteran senior quarterback David Rennicker rallied his team for an improbably half minute, five play, 71-yard drive. With just 43 ticks left on the clock, Rennicker lofted a pass to a tightly covered Luke Patrino who managed to haul in the ball and jet 12 yards to paydirt for the game winning score.

"I thought it was an interception," commented Dover coach Dan Ifft. "That play was there all night but we're still getting used to this passing game. David can throw the football and we've got to utilize him."

On the night, Rennicker completed 12 of 18 passes for an inspiring 218 yards.

The Red Riders toke a 3-0 advantage on a 27-yard field goal in the closing second of the first half.

With 5:49 left in the third period, the Tornadoes managed to get on the board when Rennicker hit Justin Norris with a 9-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 10 play, 67-yard drive.

With the win, Dover improves to 1-1 on the season while Orrville drops their second game, both coming in the final seconds.
