DELAWARE -- North Union tailback Russ Crosthwaite carried 32 times for 261 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Wildcats to a 26-14 victory over Buckeye Valley Friday night at Buckeye Valley High School. Buckeye Valley (0-5, 0-4 MOAC Red) honored both Brandon Wade, the Baron linebacker injured on Sept. 7th in a game against Sparta Highland who died Sept. 15 of injuries to his brain, and to those killed in the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. Sept. 11. Both teams also paid tribute to Wade by wearing a number 10 on their helmets. Crosthwaite's touchdown were never more than nine yards out, but still managed to average over eight yards a carry for North Union (3-2, 2-2 MOAC Red) and carried tacklers five to 10 yards a few times. Buckeye Valley, however, still managed to stay in the game. The Barons tied the Wildcats at seven at the half, trailed by only seven after three quarters and were down by just six with five minutes to go. Crosthwaite capped a solid first drive for North Union. The Wildcats drove 80 yards on 17 plays and chewed up 6:33 of clock time before the junior scored from three yards out with 2:56 left in the first period. But Buckeye Valley knotted the score in the second quarter, driving 59 yards on six plays. Baron quarterback Kyle Rehner capped the drive with a four-yard scoring run on a bootleg into the left corner of the end zone. North Union broke the tie late in the third quarter off an interception. Crosthwaite closed out a four-play, 47-yard drive with a three-yard run that put the Wildcats ahead 14-7, then took a 20-7 lead when Crosthwaite scored from nine yards out with eight minutes to play. The Barons closed within six less than three minutes later, as Rehner completed a pass to Adam Hall through the hands of a North Union defender, but the Wildcats recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove 51 yards for the clinching touchdown, a four-yard run by Crosthwaite. Wildcat quarterback Colt Thomas completed 5-of-13 passes for 68 with one interception. Aaron Monroe topped the North Union receivers with three catches for 40 yards while, Derrick Switzer, in an emergency start at fullback, added 32 yards on the ground. Rehner threw for a game-high 98 yards, completing 5-of-17 passes, one for a touchdown, while throwing three interceptions for Buckeye Valley. Ryan Smart led the Baron running game with 63 yards on 17 carries with Rehner added 57 yards on 10 rushes. Adam Hall led the Baron receivers with two catches for 33 yards and one touchdown. Both teams return to MOAC play next Friday, with North Union hosting the Ridgedale Rockets and Buckeye Valley traveling to LaRue to take on the Elgin Comets.
