MONARCHS SECOND-HALF SQUASHES PACERS DELAWARE -- The Marysville Monarchs rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit and took a 23-13 victory over the Delaware Hayes Pacers Friday in the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division opener for both schools at Gauthier Field in Delaware. Marysville (3-1, 1-0 in the OCC Capital) turned on the offense in the second half, racking up over 200 yards in the final two periods after gaining just 76 yards in the first half. The defense turned up the heat as well, allowing Hayes (2-2, 0-1) just three yards of total offense in the second half and no first downs. But it was the Pacers who controlled the first half and drew first blood. The Pacer defense picked off two Brian Pelanda passes and forced a fumble in the first 16 minutes, but still could only capitalize on one Monarch mistake in the first half. Hayes' first score came after a 20-yard Marysville punt set the Pacers up at the Monarch 32 late in the first quarter. Five plays later, Hayes quarterback Paul Stelzer hit receiver Monty Harris from 18 yards out, giving Delaware a 7-0 lead with 11:45 to play in the second. The Pacers then capitalized on a bad snap from center on a Marysville punt attempt. The snap sailed over punter Jeremy Myers' head into the end zone, but Myers was still able to complete a desperate pass to Chad Warner to the Marysville eight. Delaware, however, would score two plays later when Stelzer connected with receiver Juan Moorman from eight yards away, giving Hayes their 13-point halftime edge. But Marysville would turn the tide midway through the third quarter when two penalties pushed the Pacers back to their own one-yard line. Three plays later, Monarch nose tackle Derek Robinson stuffed Hayes running back Brian Jackson back in his end zone for a safety -- a play that fully turned the momentum in Marysville's favor. The Monarchs took the free kick back to the Hayes 41 and, seven plays later, tailback Luke Tobin carried the ball over from five yards out, to pull Marysville within five points, 13-8. Marysville's stifling defense not only stopped Hayes' offense in its tracks, it also helped the Monarchs win the battle for field position in the second half. The Monarchs' average starting position was their own 28 in the first half. In the second, the average Marysville drive started at the Hayes 43. The touchdown that gave Marysville the lead was one such drive. A 21-yard punt return by Greg House set the Monarchs up at the Hayes 33-yard line with 1:56 to play in the third. A holding call only delayed the inevitable. Seven plays after the Monarchs took over the ball, Pelanda found Mark Easton in the end zone 24 yards away to put Marysville ahead 14-13. Pelanda then hit Myers in the right corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion and a three-point lead, 16-13. Myers would score from nine yards out with 1:36 left to nail down the victory. Myers led all rushers with 103 yards on 18 carries while Tobin added 71 on 13 totes. Drew Sancho also ran for 42 yards. Pelanda's TD toss to Easton was his only completion in four attempts with two interceptions. Myers' desperation pass to Warner after the bad snap was the only other Marysville completion. Stelzer led all passers with 66 yards, hitting 8-of-21 passes with two touchdowns and one interception. Moorman caught three balls for 14 yards and Stephen Brane two for 20. Brian Jackson topped the Pacer rushers with 25 yards on 18 carries. Both teams return to OCC action next week, with Marysville hosting the Watkins Memorial Warriors and Hayes traveling to Columbus to take on the Franklin Heights Falcons.
