Marion Pleasant defeats Buckeye Valley 41-0

DELAWARE -- Marion Pleasant's defense ran its shutout streak to three consecutive games Friday night, defeating the Buckeye Valley Barons 41-0 in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Defense was the key all evening for Pleasant (7-0, 6-0 MOAC), who forced four Buckeye Valley (1-6, 1-5) fumbles and scored immediately after two of them. The Spartan defense also allowed the host Barons a net of minus-one yard in total offense.

Pleasant did their damage on the ground. All 48 Spartan plays were runs, and the visitors racked up 243 yards, led by running back Justin Williams 109 on 16 carries. Williams also scored two of the six Pleasant touchdowns in the game, played in a constant, soaking rain.

Pleasant scored before the team made its first offensive play, as Braden Freeman took back a Mark Wall punt 44 yards for a touchdown with 9:50 left in the first half. The Spartans then recovered a Buckeye Valley lateral pass and scored on their first offensive play, a two-yard run by Williams with 7:24 left in quarter number one.

Pleasant quarterback Scott Jefferies, who threw for nearly 1,900 yards in eight games as a junior at Buckeye Valley in 2000, didn't throw a pass all game, but scored the Spartans third touchdown on a four-yard run. Adam Hesler's one-yard touchdown run following another Baron fumble capped a 27-point first quarter that helped the Spartans put the game on ice.

Williams scored his second touchdown with 6:34 left in the first half, breaking free from the grasp of four Buckeye Valley tacklers and running 28 yards to paydirt. Nick Perin scored the final touchdown on a five-yard run with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

Buckeye Valley picked up their game in the second half, especially on defense, stopping two long Pleasant drives, but the early soaking by Pleasant determined the outcome before the second half had even started.

James Taylor added 24 yards on the ground for the Spartans, Clint Williams and Adam Hennessy 23 each and Preston Field 22. Ryan Smart led the Baron rushers with 32 yards on 13 carries, Chris Hughes adding 10 yards on six rushes. Kyle Rehner attempted three passes; all fell incomplete.

Both teams hit the road in MOAC play next week, with Pleasant traveling to Richwood to face the North Union Wildcats and the Barons venturing to Morral to take on the Ridgedale Rockets.
