Lewis Center Olentangy defeats Delaware Hayes 52-6

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio -- The Delaware Hayes Pacers scored on their opening possession of the game, but the host Olentangy Braves came back with 52 unanswered points en route of a 52-6 thumping of their Delaware County rivals Friday at Olentangy High School.

Olentangy (2-0) dominated Hayes (1-1) all game long. The Braves racked up 493 yards of total offense, 332, on the ground, and scored on eight of their 10 possessions in the game, including seven touchdowns. Olentangy's defense forced four Pacer turnovers. Hayes threw two interceptions and lost two of a whopping seven fumbles in the game.

Delaware Hayes moved the ball effectively, gaining 312 yards total offense (211 through the air), but had difficulty sticking the ball in the end zone. Six of the 11 Pacer possessions ended in Olentangy territory, but only one ended in a score. Three of the final four Hayes drives stalled inside the Braves' 30-yard line.

The Pacers struck first, driving 78 yards on eight plays and capping the march with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Paul Stelzer to Jordan Bruner, but the Braves struck back less than two minutes later when Andy Konczal turned the right corner and raced 47 yards for the tying touchdown. Jason Cox' extra point gave the Braves a lead they would not relinquish.

Craig Donohue connected on a 38-yard field goal just before the end of the first period to give the Braves a 10-6 lead after one period. Jason Hughes and Rich Chamlis each added five-yard scoring runs in the second quarter, helping Olentangy to a 24-6 lead at the half.

Konczal struck again on the second half kickoff, taking the ball back 85 yards for another score. Matt Butler picked off a Stelzer pass two plays into the next Hayes drive, and Chamlis ended the subsequent Brave drive with a two-yard plunge just 1:40 after the Konczal return.

Jason Cox and Derrick Witt hooked up on a 57-yard touchdown pass with under four minutes to go in the third quarter, giving Olentangy a very comfortable 45-6 lead.

Brady Collins put the final points on the board for the Braves, scoring on a two-yard run with 5:32 left to play. The fourth quarter itself seemed to go on forever, thanks to a rash of penalties. Eight of the 17 penalties on the evening were committed in the final quarter.

Cox threw just eight times in the game for Olentangy, but completed five of his passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Olentangy as a team connected on 7-of-14 passes for 161 yards. Witt had a team-high two receptions, but gained 80 yards and scored one TD. Chamlis led all rushers with 11 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Konczal also carried six times for 97 yards and a score.

Stelzer completed 8-of-18 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Pacers, but threw two interceptions. Bruner, Ted Sauder and Juan Moorman had two receptions each, Sauder for 58 yards, Bruner for 42 and Moorman for 22. Brian Jackson also carried 11 times for 64 yards to lead the Hayes running attack.

Both teams play one more non-conference tilt before heading into Ohio Capital Conference action. The Pacers return to Gauthier Field to host the 2-0 Hilliard Darby Panthers, while the Braves venture to Galloway for a matchup against the host Westland Cougars.
