Kenton defeats Coldwater 49-38

These two offensive machines kicked the season against each other, with the Wildcats from Kenton coming away with a hard earned 31-16 victory. This game would be so much different as the two teams would combine for 87 points. Super JR quarterback Ben Mauk would throw for 319 as he would 20-40. He would have three interceptions, but add four touchdowns, and on the ground he would add 2 more scores whike rushing for 223 yards on only 21 carries. Coldwater's outstanding JR quarterback would run for 105 yards on 41 carries, while throwing for 295 yards on 22 completions on 46 attempts with three touchdown passes the biggest difference in the two quarterbacks would be Hoying would be sacked 11 times. The teams would combine on the night for 990 yards of offense.

On the games 1st play Kevin Hoying would breakup Ben Mauk's 1st pass saving a long touchdown.on the very next play Mauk would connect with all everything Brandon Cornell on an 84-yard gain moving the ball to the Cavalier's 1.Mauk would take it in on the next play making it 6-0 53 seconds into the game. The extra point by David Keen was good making the score 7-0.

Coldwater would move the ball down field with no problem scoring when Hoying would boot scoot and boogie in from 9 yards out, and after talented kicker Jeff pax nailed the extra point the game was tied at seven, with 7.09 left in the 1st.

Coldwater would get their second score taking a 10-7 lead when Jeff Pax would wow the crowd of nearly 7000 with a 44-yard field goal that had plenty to spare, with 3.26 left in the opening quarter.

Kenton trying to quiet the crowd and take the lead back suffered a setback when Rob Wenning would pick off a Mauk pass with 2.45 still remaining in the 1st.

The Cavaliers would waste know time lighting the scoreboard up Again as Hoying would shake and bake his way into the end zone ,and after the extra point by Pax Coldwater would be up 17-7with 1.06 left in the 1st.

Mauk would get the snap from center with under a minute left and go 68 yards setting up Cornell's 2 yard run.The extra point again be good by David Keen making the score 17-14,and that's the way the 1st quarter would end.

Coldwater would start quickly in the second quarter. Hoying would hit Andy Mulholland for a 41 yard gain with 9.42 left. Hoying would run for 5 yards on the next play setting up his own 4 yard touchdown run with 9.16 left, the extra point by Pax was again good making the score 24-14.

Kenton would face 3rd and 2 on their next drive needing a 1st down to try and get uncle mo back on their side. Mauk once again taking things into his own hand took off down field gaining 38 yards, and getting the Awesome Kenton crowd back into the game.16 seconds after his big run Mauk would drop back and fire a pass into the hands of Tommy Petit who scored from 29 yards out, and with the extra point the Wildcats were only down 24-21 with 8.o2 left in the half.

The Kenton defense would hold Coldwater, and the offense would go right back to work scoring another touch down on a 59 yard pass from Mauk to Petit after the extra point a stunned Coldwater team was trailing 28-24 with 4.51 left in the half.

Coldwater would come right back with a scoring drive. The play that got things started was a amazing run by Hoying who broke a tackle picking up 33 yards before he was finally stopped. The biggest play on the drive besides the score was on 4th and 4 Hoying was able to hit Craig Schwieterman for a 1st down .Schwieterman would score the TD on a 2 yard pass play from Hoying. Pax again connected on the extra point making the score 31-28 with 2 seconds remaing in the half, and that's the way the exciting 1st half would end.

Coldwater would waste know time scoring in the 3rd as Hoying would hook up with Keith Kessen on a 27 yard touchdown. Pax would agin hit the extra point making the score 38-28 with 9.02 left.

The combination of Mauk to Cornell would strike again for a touchdown with 5.37 left in the 3rd on a 22 yard pass play. The extra point was no good keeping the score 38-34 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Kenton would get a huge break on the kickoff as Andrew Moeder would fumble the ball and the Wildcats would come up with it .The offense would face a 4thand 6 , but Mauk would connect with Jared Bostelman for a 1st down. A few seconds after the 1st down Mauk would make his worst decision on the night as he threw into double coverage, and Dan Kanney would pick off the pass, and with 3.17 left in the quarter Coldwater was back in business.

The Kenton defense would not allow another score setting the stage for the comeback that the Kenton fans were all anticipating.

The offense though would have a hard time getting the job done as Mauk would throw another pick with 53.6 seconds left in the 3rd, and the score would stay 38-34 Coldwater headed into the final quarter.

Turnovers would be the name early in the 4th quarter as neither team could get much going and with the clock ticking down the fans of each team was setting on the edge of their seats like they knew something breath taking was about to happen.

The Kenton offense was trying desperately to cut into the Cavaliers lead and with 4.33 left in the game they would get just a little closer when Mauk would fine Brandon Cornell for a 6 yard touch down. The coaching staff for the Wildcats would make a daring call deciding to go for 2, and the combo of Mauk to Cornell would make them look like the smartest staff in the state as they hooked up for the conversion making the score 42-38 wildcats.

The wildcats would tack on one final score with 2.36 left in the game when Mauk would score on a 15 yard run. The extra point was good making the final score 49-38 Kenton.
