Grove City defeats Toledo St John 32-0

Grove City entered the game 2-0 on a roll with wins against a really tough Piqua (29-17) team and a win over an overmatched Toledo Scott (41-19) team.

Toledo St. John, struggling this season, getting hammered by St. Ignatius in week 1 42-7 and losing a hard fought game to University of Detroit (Mich.) 21-19.

Grove City would start the game like a rocket being shot into space as they would score three quick touchdowns. The first would come with 6:06 left in the 1st quater has Justin Riley (sr 5'11" 180 rb) would rumble and stumble for a 38 yard touchdown, the extra point was wide left to make the score 6-0 Grove City. The score was set up by a nice pass to Derrick Alexander (jr 5'9" 140).

the 2nd touchdown would again come on a running play. This time from 16 yards out as Craig Derfield (jr 6'1" 152 rb) would score. This score was set up by a sweet pass by sophomore quaterback Josh Worthington (6'1" 160) to Brock Mackellar a 6'3' 180 pound wing back. This time the dawgs would go for two but like the extra point kick, it was also no good. The score was 12-0 with 2:57 left in the 1st.

The 3rd and final score in the 1st quarter would come with 30 seconds left, as the Grove City quarterback would find an open Derrick Alexander, who would score from 18 yards out. The two point try again would fail and Grove City would lead 18-0. The touchdown was set up by two big plays, a sweet 18 yard punt return by Derrick Alexander and a 23 yard run by Brock Mackellar.

The 2nd period was all defense as both teams exchanged hard hits. One highlight of the quarter was a nice interception by defensive lineman Cody Hill (sr 6'0" 211) who tipped the ball to himself and fell on all fours as he made the catch.

Toledo St John's big play would be by punter Brandon Fields (sr 6'6" 211) who put a 56 yard punt in the air that was downed at the Grove City one. Fields looks like a Divison 1-A college punter next year.

Grove City started what would be a 21 play drive that would end as the clock said 0:00 left in the half. The last play of the drive was a good interception by defensiveback Austin Mayberry (5'10" 160). Grove City's biggest play on the drive was a 21 yard run by Mackellar.

The 3rd quarter would have one score. Mackellar, the star of the game, would score on a 10 yard run. He also would add the extra point making it 25-0 Grove City with 2:56 left in the 3rd. The big play on the drive was a great 62 yard run by Justin Riley.

The rest of the 3rd both defenses would take turns coming up with big plays. Justin Riley, on the kickoff after the score, would lay the hit of the game on Austin Brady (sr 6'2" 216). The next big play would come from Pat Veer (sr 5'11" 190 lb) as he would pick off a pass. Toledo St. John would never quit and would come back with a pick of their own by little Sean Clark (5'6" 130 db). That would bring the end of the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter started the same way the 3rd ended, another interception. This time by Grove City's Brent Saunders, a 6'0" 174 pound safety. That would be the third straight pass that was intercepted.

Grove City would end the scoring when Mackellar would score from 41 yards out and he again would connect on the point after.

Jake Zechman 3 catches - (all on the 1st drive) can not figure out why they quit going his way.

Notes
Mike Kunzer (sr 6'0" 150 qb) took a beating all night from the Grove City defense but he would get up and give it another shot. That is until Toledo would empty the bench, as both teams did. Grove city would play 3 quarterbacks.

Brandon Fields is the best punter I have seen this year in Ohio, someone needs to recruit this guy hard.
