In a perfect day for a saturday afternoon football game, the Irish of Lancaster Fisher Catholic hosted the Blue Aces of Granville. Defense would be the name of the game today as both offenses must have been waiting for the usual 7:30p.m. kickoff. Fisher was trying to put a drive together when head coach Andy Helms, a Newark Catholic grad, would take a huge gamble on 4th and 7 and go for it. Granville's defense would make the first big play of the game when sophomore defensive back Craig Pulliam (6'0" 155) would step in front of quarterback Mike Romano (sr 5'10" 175) pass and pick it off. The defense of both teams would rule the first period as the only scoring would be on a safety when Granville's quarterback, Tyler Collen (sr 6'0" 170), would be charged with intentional grounding in his end zone trying to avoid a sack. So the first quater would end with Fisher Catholic up 2-0. Fisher started the second with the ball but on the first play from scrimmage had a bad exchange on the handoff. It would lead to a fumble that the Blue Aces would pounce on, but the offense would lose four yards and be forced to punt. The Fisher offense did even worse on their next drive losing nine yards due to two penalties and they had to punt the ball back to Granville. Granville would put a drive togather mid way thourgh the second quarter and with the aid of pass interference call on Fisher's Trever Baker, the Blue Aces would score a touchdown. The score came on a three yard Mike Mintos (sr 5'11" 170) run. The attempt for two was no good and with 5:05 left in the half, Granville lead 6-2 and that would be the score at the half. Granville would receive the opening kickoff of the second half but Matt Havens (sr 5'10" 170) would get hit and fumble the ball. Little Tyler Blanchard (so 5'7" 165) would recover at the Granville 25. Behind the hard running of Tony Miller (sr 5'10" 180 rb) and some nice blocking by the offensive line, the Irish would score. Miller would plow in from two yards out. The extra point was no good and with 9:26 remaing in the third, Fisher led 8-6. Granville trying to make something happened would gamble on a 4th and 7 and lose as Trever Baker (5'8" 170 db) would get the first of two interceptions. Fisher had the ball 1st and 10 with 7:38 left in the third but as the name of the game today was defense, Granville's would stand tall and force another Irish punt. The third quarter had 57 seconds left when Baker would get his second pick on the day. So after three quarters, it was 8-6 Fisher Catholic. With Uncle Mo on the side of the Irish, the offense would cash in on a sweet catch and a great run afterwards by Bo Clum (jr 5'10" 160 wr) covering 39 yards resulted in another Irish touchdown. Again, the extra point was no good but Fisher had a 14-6 lead and the fat lady was warming up her voice. Granville, trying to get their no-huddle spread the field offense working, would again be hurt by the interception bug when Clum would pick off a pass with 6:11 left in the game. Neither offense again would be able to move the ball and Fisher would send the visiting Blue Aces home with their firstt defeat of the season; 14-6. newarkcatholicfan |
