Dublin Scioto defeats Marysville 27-0

DUBLIN -- The Dublin Scioto Irish shut down the Marysville offense most of the game and scored four times in the second and third quarters combined to shut out the visiting Monarchs 27-0 Friday.

The loss snaps Marysville's streak of 23 consecutive regular season wins. During that period, the Monarchs went 26-2, their only two losses coming in the regional semifinals in 1999 and the state semifinals in 2000.

Marysville (1-1) controlled the clock, but were never able to stick the ball in the end zone. Marysville held the ball for nearly two-thirds of the ballgame, using 30:23 of the clock, while Dublin Scioto (2-0) held the ball just 17:37.

The Monarchs gained 93 yards on their first three possessions of the game, but were not able to sustain another drive until the final minutes, when they drive 58 yards on 14 plays but turned the ball over on downs.

Marysville used the first 9:08 of clock time and pushed all the way to the Dublin Scioto three-yard line on the first drive of the game, but a holding penalty and a six-yard loss when quarterback Brian Pelanda slipped on the wet turf forced a 35-yard field goal attempt by Erik Bishop, which fell short.

Dublin Scioto also had trouble penetrating the Marysville defense. The Monarch defense allowed the Irish just 64 yards of total offense before the drive that gave Scioto its first offensive touchdown. Marysville, meanwhile, had just 90 yards of total offense in their first five drives, but trailed 7-0.

That first touchdown came when Nick Rice returned a Jeremy Myers punt 82 yards for the score with 6:13 to play in the first half. The Irish put together their first strong drive, a six-play, 43-yarder just before halftime, one that ended on Trevor Sheppard's four-yard touchdown pass to OSU signee Jay Richardson.

Scioto took the first possession of the second half back 67 yards on six plays, with Sheppard hitting Nick Rice on a quick slant from 12 yards out for the third Irish touchdown and a 20-0 lead.

Scioto scored the final TD with 47 seconds left in the third period when Sheppard found Kyle Sherman in the right corner of the end zone on a timing pattern.

Sheppard completed 7-of-13 passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns, throwing one interception and David Hayes completed his only attempt, a 31-yard strike to Zach Ward. Eric Yates led all rushers with 88 yards on 13 carries for the Irish. Ward and Sherman had two receptions each for Scioto, Ward for 35 yards and Sherman for 30.

Jeremy Myers topped the Marysville rushing attack with 59 yards on 19 carries while Greg House carried six times for 46 yards and Luke Tobin had 13 carries and gained 41 yards. Pelanda completed just 4-of-16 passes for 22 yards for the Monarchs. Mark Easton caught two of those passes for 13 yards.

Both teams return to action with Friday games. Marysville will play host to the Bellefontaine Chieftains, while Scioto makes the trek down Hard Road to Worthington to face the Kilbourne Wolves.
