DOVER TOPS MEADOWBROOK, LEAD ECOL RACE Somebody better alert Merriam-Webster, the Dover Tornadoes updating the noun "Homecoming" on Friday night. Homecoming (hôm 'kum ing) n 1: An annual event at schools, colleges, and universities for visiting graduates. 2: The end zone. Before an unusually sparse crowd at Crater Stadium in Dover, the Tornadoes reached paydirt nine times to dominate the Meadowbrook Colts 60-8 in an important East Central Ohio League game. The win improves the Dover record to 6-2 on the season and more importantly 4-0 in the ECOL while the Colt's drop to 1-7 on the campaign and 0-4 in the league. With Indian Valley falling 18-13 to Coshocton, Dover is now the only team undefeated in league play. Dover started the scoring early and never let up. Ryan Braglin made a remarkable 54-yard punt return to setup a Luke Patrino score and Todd Lisowski added the extra point to make it 7-0 Dover. Braglin scored on a 6-yard run, Patrino broke loose for a 60-yard punt return, and quarterback David Rennicker nail Jono Kennedy for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Lisowski booted all three extra points and Dover led 28-0 after the first period. Not only was the Tornado offense on fire but the dominate Dover defense did not even allow a Meadowbrook first down in the first quarter and by the half the Colts would only accumulate 50 yards of offense and be forced to punt the ball away eight times. Meanwhile, Mike Myers intercepted a Meadowbrook pass to setup an Ashley Smith 5-yard touchdown run. Matt McKenzie dashed 36 yards to the end zone. Rennicker connected with Donnie Maz for a 36-yard touchdown pass and the Tornadoes led 48-0 at the half. With a promising second team, Dover would increase their lead to 54-0 heading into the final period. Kyle Mears took the ball in from five years out. The point after kick was no good. The Colt would finally reach the end zone late in the contest and convert on the two point conversion to end the Dover shutout. The game's final score came when Mitch Gehrisch busted the Meadowbrook line and jetted 33 yards for a touchdown. Lisowski downed the extra point attempt to make the final score stand 60-8. Even with the win, the Tornadoes are expected to drop in the Ohio High School Athletic Association's computer rankings but face two teams that are capable of putting the Tornadoes in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. Next week Dover will travel to Indian Valley (6-2) and then host rival New Philadelphia (5-3) in the final week. "We'll find out in the next couple of weeks how good we're really playing," commented senior Russell Lloyd. "We don't just want to win out, we want to get into the tournament and do some damage. We're going to be excited in the coming weeks." comalog For more on Dover sports, visit dhstornadoes.com |
