Dover beats Cambridge 33-13

TORNADOES PICK UP LEAGUE WIN AT CAMBRIDGE

The Cambridge Bobcats came out with an elusive no back offense to catch the visiting Dover defense off guard and give Cambridge a quick 7-0 lead. However, Dover quickly recovered to tame the Bobcats 33-13 on Friday night in a key East Central Ohio League match up.

The Tornadoes improve to 2-0 in league play and 4-2 on the season while Cambridge drops to 0-2 in the ECOL and 1-5 on the season.

With a five receiver set and a speedy Josh Lowery at quarterback, Cambridge drove 75-yards to the end zone. Prince Mitchell finished the drive with a one yard plunge to paydirt. The point after gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.

"We hadn't seen that look from them, but we practice for it every week," commented Dover head coach Dan Ifft. "I thought we did a nice job adjusting to that after that first drive."

Dover quickly responded when quarterback David Rennicker scored on the keeper from a yard out. Rennicker complete 5-of-5 passes during the drive. Justin Perkowski's point after knotted the game at 7-7.

The Tornadoes would score a pair of touchdowns before half to take a 21-7 lead. Rennicker hooked up with Jonathan Kennedy for a 28 yard touchdown pass. The point after attempt was wide but Dover took the lead for good at 13-7.

Late in the second quarter, Luke Patrino fielded a Cambridge punt and went 44 yards untouched to the end zone. Rennicker connected with Aaron Margo on the two point conversation to make the score 21-7.

On their second possession of the third quarter, Dover pulled away when Rennicker capped off a nine play drive with a two yard touchdown run, the kick was no good making the Dover lead stand at 27-7.

The Bobcats tried to rally midway through the final period but burned too much time off the clock during an 85-yard touchdown drive ended with a fourth down touchdown pass. Cambridge's attempted at the two point conversation was no good making the score 27-13.

Cambridge attempted the onside kick but Patrino picked up the ball on the side line and took it all they to the end zone. The point after attempted, which was penalized 15 yards, was no good to make the final score 33-13.

The Dover offensive attack was evenly spread with Ryan Braglin leading the way with 81 yards while Patrino rushed for 75 yards and Ashley Smith added 37 yards. Rennicker had another fine night for the Tornadoes as he completed 11-of-16 passing attempts.

"He's a talented kid," said Ifft. "He really only made one bad throw tonight and he really learned from that one."

Dover will host the Claymont Mustangs next week while Cambridge plays the Coshocton Redskins. Coming off their first loss in 19 games to Dover last week, the Redskins defeated Claymont 41-21.
