Delaware Hayes defeats Buckeye Valley 13-0

DELAWARE -- Delaware Hayes broke a scoreless tie with two touchdowns in the third quarter and posted a 13-0 victory over Delaware County rival Buckeye Valley Friday night at Gauthier Field in Delaware.

The Pacers came out at full gallop in the second half after losing 27 yards rushing in the first. Freshman tailback Brian Jackson eventually broke the tie with a 10-yard touchdown run, set up by quarterback Phil Stelzer's 37-yard run two plays earlier.

Hayes scored the final touchdown of the night when Stelzer found senior receiver Juan Moorman in the left corner of the end zone from 11 yards out.

Buckeye Valley's running tandem of junior fullback Chris Hughes and sophomore tailback Ryan Smart did damage all evening, but a weak passing game and untimely penalties soured the offense.

Smart led all rushers with 72 yards on the ground, BV quarterback Kyle Rehner added 35 and Hughes 34, but Rehner completed just 4-of-19 passes for 47 yards and was intercepted once by Hayes' Matt McNeal. The Barons were penalized 10 times for 79 yards, compared to Hayes' four penalties for 30 yards.

Stelzer completed 12-of-19 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown for Hayes while Jackson carried for 64 yards in their varsity debuts. Senior receiver Ted Sauder caught four passes for 86 yards to lead all receivers.

Hayes visits Lewis Center next Friday to face another Delaware County rival, the Olentangy Braves. Buckeye Valley, meanwhile, starts Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play, hosting the Northmor Golden Knights, currently the holders of a 33-game losing streak following their 26-20 overtime loss to Crestline.
