Defiance wins over Lima Shawnee 28-7

The Defiance defense turned in another great performance in holding Shawnee, which rolled up almost 500 yards in their previous game, to just 118 yards.

Defiance (3-0, 2-0) controlled the lines the whole game, and got started early. QB Austin Keel scored the first points of the game on a 2 yard run in the first quarter. With the Defiance offense controlling the clock as well, the next score came in the second quarter as Eric Steyer scored on a 3 yard run. Later in the second, Steyer scored again on an 8 yard run with about a minute left in the first half. Shawnee (1-2, 0-2) managed their biggest play of the game soon after, scoring their only TD on a 40 yard pass with just seconds remaining. After a good kickoff return and a long pass, Defiance attempted a 50 yard field goal which came up well short. There was no scoring in the third quarter, but Defiance added a TD early in the fourth quarter as Keel ran it in from 7 yards out. Neither team threatened after that.

The game was not filled with big plays. Defiance chewed up major time on the ground, sustaining long drives, consistently gaining 5 yards a carry, but could not break a long run. Shawnee managed only 14 yards on the ground and the Defiance defense also held Shawnee's good passing game to just 100 yards.

No team lost any fumbles and each team had one interception. Shawnee's QB, Keaton Hullinger, completed 50% of his passes, but could not get Shawnee into the end zone. Defiance didn't get much pressure in the first quarter, but ended up with 5 sacks. Eric Steyer got a workout for Defiance, carrying the ball 36 times for 154 yards.

The rain was not a factor in the game, as it rained briefly for just the final 3 plays of the first half.
