Columbus Hartley defeats Newark Catholic 10-6

Turnovers Give Hawks An Early Christmas Present

The Newark Catholic Greenwave played Santa last night as they gave the ball away 6 times to Hartley Hawks team that was more then gale to take the gifts, and turn it into a win as a shocked crowd of a little more then 2000 watched in horror.

Things would start terrible for the Wave, as Kyle Williamson would fumble the ball away on the Greenwaves 1st drive 25 seconds into the game. The Greenwave defense who would hold Hartley to a low total of 121 yards would come up strong and force the Hawks to a long field goal try.

The Greenwave did not take long to give gift number 2 away on the night as struggling senior quarterback Kevin Dolan would throw a bad pass that would be intercepted by junior defensiveback Matt Groom. The Hawks would cash in this time as kicker Kevin Petrella would nail a 30 yard field goal giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead with 6:26 left in the opening quarter.

Kevin Dolan who was only 8-19 on the game for 88 yards hit senior receiver Adam "Double A" Amornyard, but after a nice run "Double A" would give the Hawks gift number 3. The Greenwave defense would come to the rescue again forcing Hartley to again go for a long field goal that wasn't close.

Kyle "The Show" Williamson playing under 100% healthy again would gain 12 of his 123 yards and score the Waves only touchdown of the game with 5:32 left in the 3rd, but as had been the case more times then not this year, senior kicker George Biddle would miss the extra point keeping the score at 6-3 Greenwave.

The 3rd quarter was the worst quarter of the year as the Greenwave would deliver 3 gifts by the way of turnovers. The 1st coming after a nice run by senior runningback Brian Campolo, who would fumble the ball when it squirted out as he was switching the ball from one hand to the other. The 2nd turnover would be after another outstanding run, this time by Dolan, but as the case up to then, the Greenwave defense would hold the Hawks to 0 points. The 3rd turnover was the one that killed the Greenwave as Dolan again would fumble the ball away as the 3rd quarter would come to an end.

The Hawks would score a touchdown on the 1st play of the final quarter and after the extra point by Petrella, the Hawks would have the lead.

Late in the 4th, Newark Catholic had a chance to try and win but Dolan would not come close on a couple of passes and Hartley would get the ball back. The Defense would make a their only mistake all night on 3rd down with a penalty giving the Hawks a 1ST down letting them run out the clock.
