Bedford Chanel runs to state championship Behind the final’s best running back, Tony Franklin, Bedford Chanel won the Division 5 state title. Franklin ran for 393 yards a new state championship record. With 7.02 left in the first quarter Franklin would score from 7 yards out giving his team the 6-0 the extra point would be good making the score 7-0. The last play of the first quarter would be the one play that Pleasant’s multi talented quarterback would get hurt a not return. Pleasant would not give up showing a lot of heart for a team that had just lost its leader, and with 10.10 left in the half they would recover a Chanel fumble giving them a break that they really needed. The Chanel defense would hold and it would be Franklin time again as he would score from81 yards out, the extra point would be good, and Chanel was out in front 14-0 with 8.12 left in the half. Pleasant would fumble on their next possession when back up quarterback J.R.Cleveland would make a bad pitch. Chanel would have to settle for a 24-yard field goal by senior kicker Chris Penny making the score 17-0, with 5.39 left in the half. Chanel would strike again with 1.20 remaining in the half as quarterback Kyle Moriarity would hit Michael Collins for a 46-yard touchdown pass, and after another extra point the score was 24-0. There would be no more scoring in the half. Franklin would get things started in the third quarter by scoring from 49 yards out with 11.11 remaining and after another extra point the score was 31-0. Pleasant would finally get on the board with 7.56 left in the third as J.R. Cleveland would hit Adam Hesler on a 17-yard touchdown pass, and Shawn Galloway would connect on the extra point making the score 31-7. Pleasant with new life would get a break when Franklins fumble the ball and the defense would come up with it. Cleveland would hit Hesler on a long pass play setting up a 24-yard touchdown run by James Taylor would make the score 31-13, as the extra point would be blocked do to a high snap, and with 525 left in the third it seemed that Pleasant might make it a game. Franklin would end any comeback talk 15 seconds later as he would sprint in from 80 yards out, the extra point was again good making the score 38-13, with 5.10 left in a very exciting third quarter. Chanel would try and convert an onside kick after the touchdown, but pleasant’s defense would shut down the powerful Chanel offense and the third quarter would come to an end. The first score of the fourth quarter would come from Pleasant as they would get a 37-yard punt return by Brandon Freeman making the score 38-19, a two-point try would fail. Jason Perry would catch a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Moriarity with 2.10 left in the game. The extra point was no good making the score 44-19. Pleasant playing until the very end would score with 32 seconds left in the game as running back Braden Freeman would hit Cleveland for a 6-yard touchdown, a two-point conversion was good making the final score 44-27. newarkcatholicfan |
