Carey defeats Seneca East 14-6

The Carey Blue Devils continued their surprising season with a 14-6 win over Seneca East at Carey's Wentling Field Friday night.

The Blue Devils are 4-0 and 1-0 in the Midland Athletic League while Seneca East drops to 3-1, 0-1.

Seneca East scored first in the game when quarterback Joe Weaver found split end Mike Eckleberry on a 73 yard touchdown pass. Matt Berger's extra point was partially blocked but the Tigers lead 6-0 with 11:47 left in the second quarter.

Carey's wishbone offense took the lead with 3:08 left in the second quarter when FB Joe Clinger scored on a one-yard run. Josh Traxler added the extra point and the Blue Devils led 7-6 and the score would remain 7-6 at the half.

Carey added one more touchdown in the second half on another one-yard touchdown run by Clinger. Traxler's extra point was good and Carey wins 14-6.

The Blue Devils were led by Clinger with 67 yards rushing on 15 carries. Overally, Carey had 121 yards rushing. Quarterback Gary Risner was 2-3 passing for 36 yards.

Seneca East QB Joe Weaver was 9-20, 133 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. Leading the Tigers on the ground was tailback Paul Weaver, who had 79 yards on 19 carries.

This was the 428th all-time victory for Carey. The Blue Devils are 428-307 overall with 31 ties. Carey's first football team competed in 1914 and the school won the 1975 Class A state title. Overall, Carey leads the all-time series 9-3 with Seneca East. The Blue Devils were 9-2 last year with a playoff birth.

Coach Jim Draper graduated many key performers off that team and is playing many young players, however, they're 4-0 and face rival Sycamore Mohawk next week. Seneca East continues Midland Athletic League action next Saturday night on the road at Fremont St. Joe.
