The place, Canton McKinley High School. The game was a rematch of a playoff game from last season in which Canton Central won 7-6, how much things changed in a year. The game would begin with a double bang, both teams would take their opening kick off and return it for a touch down. Carrollton's very talented senior Ryan Rector (5'11" 175# rb) would go up the left sideline for a 89 yard touchdown. Not to be outdone, Canton Central Catholic would field the returning kick at the 20 yard line and after some good blocks by Jim Curran (sr 5'9' 160# wr), they broke free and were off to the races, tying the score at 7 with 11:37 left in the 1st quater. After that, it was Crusaders. Talented quaterback Vince Gliatta would hit Steve Andersona (fr 6'0" 195# te) for a 9 yard touchdown. Kicker Brent Lilley (5'8" 160 soph) would shake off last weeks trouble and connect on his first of many extra points on the day and with 5:07 left in the 1st, Canton had a 14-7 lead. On 4th and long, Carrollton coaches tried a trick play, a fake punt, but Central Catholic was not fooled at all. The offense for Canton made Carrollton pay for the mistake and scored on a 12 yard run by jr rb Mark McCants(5'5" 140#). Another extra point by Lilley made it 21-7 with 11:07 left in the 2nd. Another mistake by Carrollton, a fumble by rb Keith Beckly (5'11" 190 sr) with 8:08 left in the second, would set up Central's next score. The Carrollton defense tried to step up, sacking Central qb Gliatta and making it 4th and 12 on the Carrollton 24. Being to long for a field goal, Central went for it. Giliatta dropped back in the pocket and found a wide open Dan Brechbill (5'9" 165# sr). He would take the pass and score and with another Lilley extra point, the score was 28-7 with 5:52 left in the half. Neither team would do anything else in the half. The defense would take over as Chris Pollard (jr 6'2" 250 dt) had a QB sack. Not to be out done, Adam Shipley (dt) of Carrollton (5'11" 189# sr) would sack Gliatta. Gliatta would fumble the ball a few plays later and Carrolliton would take over but again found no offense. The Canton defense would not give an inch and with one second left in the half, Steve Anderson, Chris Pillard, and Dan Breechbill all would hit and sack the QB. With a little over 8 minutes left in the 3rd and Carrollton offense trying to get it going, Gliatta playing on defense(db)would pick off a pass and take it to the house from 70 yards out. Lilley kept it a perfect day and the score would be 35-7. In the next 8 minutes, the defenses would take center stage as a couple sacks would be the big plays. The first being by Mr Everything, Jeremy Pogorelec of Canton Central (5'10" 200# jr) that occured with 5:53 left in the 3rd. A few plays later, Carrollton's Mike May (6'3" 183# sr) would sack Central's QB. That play would give Carrollton a little "mo" and the offense would score for the last time on a 22 yard field goal by Mr. May. The 3rd quarter would end with Central up 35-10. The 4th would have one score and that came on a 1 yard run by Marques Warner(sr 5'8" 185# rb). The kick was again good by Lilley and that would make it 42-10 Central. Punter Mike May of Carrolton would hit a beautiful 58 yard punt late in the 4th quater and that would be the highlight of the 2nd half for a struggling team. With 3.1 seconds left in the game, Tim Farris (5'11" 155# de) of Central would sack the QB and the clock would run out ending a great day for Central Catholic. newarkcatholicfan |
