GALION -- Big Walnut’s Charlie Smith rushed for a game-high 225 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Eagles tore apart the Galion Tigers 42-15 Friday at Heise Park in Galion. Smith rushed just five times in the game, but three went for touchdowns of 58, 67 and 83 yards. Galion running back Ben Neumann twisted his ankle in the first half and did not return after carrying just five times for 13 yards. Smith scored on his first carry of the game, an 85-yard run, and Matt Weade’s kick gave Big Walnut a 7-0 lead. The Eagles later capitalized on a bad punt snap as the Eagles’ Paul Simpson fell on the loose football in the end zone to put the Eagles up 14-0. Joel Brockman capped the next Big Walnut drive with a five-yard touchdown run and the Eagles had a 21-0 lead just 7:49 into the game. The Tigers got on the board when quarterback Ken Keesee hit Matt Trammel from 46 yards out. Keesee then found Ryan Pensinger in the end zone for a two-point conversion and Galion has closed within 13 points. But Smith scored again less than a minute later from 58 yards out, and caught a pass from Brockman giving the Eagles a 29-8 first quarter lead. Smith added a 67 yards scoring run two minutes into the second quarter and Evan Circle’s scored from 20 yards out with 7:14 to play in the first half to close the Eagle scoring for the night. Galion’s Shandon North, who led the Tigers with 72 yards on 18 carries in place of Neumann, scored the final touchdown from five yards out with 8:30 to play in the game. Circle also finished with 68 yards on the ground for Big Walnut while Brockman threw the ball just twice, completing one to Circle for 15 yards. Keesee went 6-for-13 for 110 yards with one touchdown for the Tigers. Josh Shifley led the Galion receivers with six catches for 83 yards. Both teams return to action Friday night. Big Walnut will travel to Pataskala to face the Watkins Memorial Warriors in their Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division opener while Galion plays host to Tiffin Columbian in their Northern Ohio League season opener.
