Yappi.com writer CANTON--It was a game full of runs at the Edward L. Peel Coleman Community Center Tuesday night. A game full of runs that ended with the Canton Alumni prevailing over the McKinley black team in a hotly contested contest. It was all Canton Alumni in the first quarter as they came out red hot by recording steals and six unanswered points in the beginning of the first quarter of Tuesday night's game. The McKinley Black timeout with 5:21 in the first quarter signaled that they might be a little unprepared to take the team set before them. The resilient McKinley Black team kept their head up despite being down 10 at the end of the first quarter at 17-7. The beginning of the second quarter much resembled the beginning of the first as the Alumni went on 6 to 2 tear. Miscommunications that led to turnovers showed McKinley Black’s inexperience as the Alumni held a 16 point lead at the half, at 31-15. If McKinley Black had anything to be happy about at halftime, it was that they had caused 7 turnovers by the Canton Alumni. The second half of the game didn’t start out well for McKinley Black either, as an alley-oop by the Canton Alumni hinted that they might be pulling away as they continued their 8-0 run stemming from the first half. A quick 8-0 run by the McKinley Black team showed that they would not go away so easily as the lead was cut to 10. The Canton Alumni answered back with a run of their own, outscoring the McKinley Black team 6-2. #23 would not let the alumni pull away though as he completed a three-point play with 2:41 left in the 3rd quarter. Being down 8 at the end of the 3rd quarter was a ray of hope for the McKinley Black team seeing as how they were down 16 at the half. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, the McKinley Black team cut the lead to four with 7:20 left in the game. The Canton Alumni came out and showed their experience as they shot a very high percentage and extending the lead back up to 10. The Canton Alumni began to trap the younger inexperienced McKinley Black team causing turnovers and easy buckets that led to their eight point, 66-58 victory. After the game, the coach of the McKinley Black team Bryant Bowden said that his team "performed decently and that they really came out in the 3rd and 4th quarters and made it a game." “They need to improve on the fundamentals of the game,” said Bowden when asked what the team needs to work on. The many turnovers that the team had is an example of why they need to improve on these assets. As the summer league season goes on, the team hopes to improve and progress to be ready for the regular season. |
