Staff Reporter Lake Catholic overcame a shaky start and ealry foul trouble, then played a solid second half to beat Little Miami 51-44 in a Division II state semifinal game. The Cougars (17-10) were led by senior point guard Courtney Schuster, who had a game-high 14 points. Senior Dana Radley added 10 points and junior Jill Mohr had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Schuster and Mohr combined on one of the biggest plays of the game. The Cougars were clinging to a 40-38 lead when they missed a one-and-one. Mohr, saving the loose rebound from going out of bounds, flung the ball blindly to Schuster, who anticipated the pass and scored an uncontested layup. Schuster later gave the Cougars the lead for good with 2:52 left when she turned a steal into a breakaway layup. Lake Catholic made 8-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game. The Cougars won despite turning the ball over 29 times. Little Miami, which took a 26-0 record into the game and was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, outplayed Lake Catholic in most aspects of the game. The Panthers shot themselves in the foot -- about the only shot they connected on all day -- with their inability to put the ball in the basket. Little Miami shot a woeful 15-of-59 from the floor, missing numerous shots from point-blank range. The Panthers were led by Missy Ramsey's 10 points. Senior post Alexis Karel, who sat much of the first half after picking up two quick fouls for Lake Catholic, finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. She made 7-of-9 free throws. More made all five of her attempts for the Cougars, who were 18-of-24 overall. Lake Catholic has been destiny's darlings throughout the postseason, winning its second tournament game over Kenston in overtime after a 3-pointer beat the buzzer to end regulation. The Cougars got a major break at the Barberton Regional, when Bay point guard Paris Pugliese, a third-team All-Ohioan, was injured in the semifinal and unable to play against Lake Catholic in the regional final, which Lake won by just three points.
