NAVARRE—It was a week ago that the Fairless basketball team endured probably the worst tongue-lashing that sixth-year Falcon floor ruler Matt Kramer could give to his flock.

They were on the wrong end of a 53-30 loss to the Tuslaw Mustangs, after drilling them by 35 in the first meeting.

Whatever Kramer told his players before their game against Central Catholic, it worked to their advantage as the Falcons sent their seniors out of the Falcon’s Nest with a courageous flight to a 42-40 win over Central Catholic.

This time, Kramer could not help but praise his high-flying birds on a Saturday night where Fairless fans got their money’s worth in the form of a win.

“You have to understand that Senior Night is a special night. We want them to be in a position like this for the four years they play here and you have to give them credit for sticking with the program” Kramer said. “I’m proud of our seniors and the others who have stuck with the program. It would have been easy for them to quit based on our record this year but that is not what they are all about. They are all about staying together as a team.”

This game had the ebb and flow of a hotly contested high school basketball game where both teams gave it everything they had. With both teams having attempted a total of 43 three-pointers in the contest, it was going to come down to which team made the critical plays in the contest.

For most of the game, both teams could not establish any momentum. And neither team had a lead larger than six.

Fortunately for the Falcons, they were able to out-slug the Crusaders in a willful battle of lights out three-point shooting teams.

“I’ll tell you what, that last minute in the fourth quarter was scary. Central did a good job in that minute. But we were able to convert that lay-up there at the end (Ryan Stantz long pass to Kyle Wade). You have to be able to stick it out in a close game like that and if you can, you will win games,” Kramer said.

“I love these kids. They have fought hard all season. I’ll be honest with you and I’m not spinning anything, I love these kids.”

Whatever Kramer told his players before their win against the Crusaders was indeed a portent of positives to come for the Fairless Falcons.

JV game: Central Catholic 54, Fairless 43

NAVARRE—Central Catholic sophomore center Eric Coggins rammed home a two-handed dunk late in the fourth quarter to fuel the Crusaders’ win over the Falcons in the reserve game.

The Crusaders outscored the Falcons 20-11 in the last quarter. They are now 17-2 on the season under head coach Steve Watson.

“It was a big dunk. It gave us a big momentum lift. They were staggered and it was time to finish them off,” the 6’7’’ Coggins said.

Watson cut in saying, “It was a great pass and a great finish.”
