Yappi.com writer MASSILLON-16 points in the third quarter might be enough to tell the average basketball fan that junior guard Ryan Travis has some incredible talent. You might think that would go to a young man's head. Not so with this guy. Travis scored 16 points with nine coming on his personal 9-0 run that was pivotal in the Mustangs' win over Fairless last week. Although Tuslaw is 5-13 on the season, he still has optimism that the Mustangs can make some noise in the tournament once the post-season rolls around. When asked about his clutch performance, he remarked "It's not about me. I didn't know that I went on that 9-0 run myself," he said in shock. "I just wanted to take over the game and involve the rest of my teammates. We play hard as a team and we do not give up regardless of our record." In the classroom, he is the example of a scholar-athlete as he carries a sturdy 3.0 grade point average off the floor. His hard work in the classroom and the floor is what pleases his dad more than anything. Most basketball players are talked about through their game. Travis is talked about on and off the floor. "Ryan works hard both on and off the floor. He is well respected by his peers and his teammates along with his brother (Tyler)," Chris Travis said. "He has played basketball since the sixth grade and he manages his time well." "Basketball is a team effort and the game involves five players, not one," Ryan Travis said. With two games left in the season, the Mustangs want to go into the tournament on a winning note. The Mustangs have not enjoyed too much success in the playoffs since their 1997-98 team was one of two Stark County schools to advance to the State Final Four under then head-coach Randy Endsley. Travis looks forward to the success he is sure is coming and that is the mood he wants around the Mustang stable. "We are about playing the game and having fun while doing it," he said. "We are going to win as a team playing the game the Tuslaw Mustang way." He finished with a grin, saying, "they'll never see us coming because nobody talks about us." Don't be so sure about that. People are talking about Ryan Travis. People are talking about the Tuslaw Mustangs. |
