Yappi.com writer CANTON—The Lake Blue Streaks came into Charles “Red” Ash Gymnasium determined to put their dismal loss to Canton McKinley behind them. However, another Canton team was waiting for them. The Canton South Wildcats used the efforts of double-digit scorers Cory Bourquin, Antwon Ervin, and Raphael Johnson to turn back the Blue Streaks Tuesday night by a score of 56-43. The Wildcats were on their way to a wire-to-wire win when Bourquin popped in an early jump shot to give the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead. And they did not look back from that point on. A big reason for the Wildcats win was the stifling defense that Johnson played on Lake shooting star Eric Coblentz. Coblentz scored 27 points in the Blue Streaks Federal League setback to the Bulldogs. This time, he walked off the floor with nine points, with four of those nine coming on free throws. “I was very proud of the way Raphael played defense on Coblentz tonight,” Canton South head coach Henry Cobb said. “He made Coblentz work for every shot tonight and forced him to try and beat us.” Coblentz went scoreless in the second and third quarters after scoring five in the opening quarter. He led the Blue Streaks in scoring. The Wildcats improved their record to 9-3 on the season while Lake took a step back to 6-7 on the season. Ervin led the South attack with 19 points, followed by Johnson’s 15 and Bourquin’s 10. Cobb praised the scoring efforts of his backcourt. “I was proud of our backcourt and how well they played. Antwon made some big shots late in the game and Bourquin and Johnson continued to step up for us tonight.” Ervin scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats return to conference play in the NBC as they host the Louisville Leopards Friday evening at Ash Gymnasium. The Wildcats fell short earlier in the season to the Leopards with a one point loss. They have lost the last four contests to the Leopards and it is a trend that Cobb intends to have his leaders change. “Louisville plays hard on both offense and defense. We are going to have to be at our best to win Friday night to keep pace in the NBC,” Cobb said. However, on this night, Canton South walked off the floor knowing that they gave Lake a double and dismal dose of Canton. BOXSCORE Field goals: Canton South 18/38 (47%), Lake 16/60 (27%). Three-point goals: Canton South ¼ (25%), Lake 7/23 (30%). Free throws: Canton South 17/21 (81%), Lake 6/8 (75%). Fouls: Canton South 11, Lake 20. Turnovers: Canton South, 19, Lake 15.

Micah Stair led the Lake attack with 21 points. After a slow first half, the Blue Streaks took control of the game much to the approval of head coach Scott Cassidy. “I told our players that we had to step up. We were not playing our best in the opening quarters,” Cassidy said. “Micah got hot in the third quarter and that was huge for us as a team.” Lake improved to 8-6. |
